o Explain what Arthur means by this reference.
o In your opinion, why do you think it is important for veterans (from any war) to talk about their experiences with other veterans, as well as non-veterans?
2 On page 83, Francis mentions a little boy that is scared of him on the street.
o In what ways does his face echo the person that he inside?
o In what ways doesn’t it reflect the person he is inside?
3. On pages 84 and 85, Francis shares that he burns up Dr. Abrams’ address and phone number in his kitchen sink. Next, he burns up a list from Enrico, detailing possible hospitals in which he planned to live until he found his “proper method of disposal.”
o Why does Francis burn up these contacts?
o What does Enrico mean by “proper method of disposal” and why does Francis understand this concept so well?
A little boy gets scared of Francis when he's walking down the street. His face echos who he is inside because in someways, Francis is scared of himself too. He covers as much of him as he can up, scared of what people will think about him. He's scaredof his imag and impact it has on people. He is also scared of himself being a hero. He doesn't consider himself a hero, even though he has a Silver Star. It doesn't reflect the person he is inside too. He knows that he can't run away from himself like the little boy did.
ReplyDeleteFrancis made the biggest heroic act ever. I would never do what he did. Francis’s heroic act was that he jumped in front of a grenade for a group of people. He protected them from danger just to save their lives. This is a beautiful sacrifice in my opinion. In my eyes Francis is a hero, and will always be one. Because of this heroic act, Francis received a silver star and a scar upon his face. He also received the memory of this day and all the pain he went through.
ReplyDeleteFrancis’s face resembles his insides. Broken, dead, and brave. If I were Francis, I would have no self-confidence at all. I would feel as if everyone stared at me. That everyone was talking about me saying, “Hey, look at that freak!” Francis’s face doesn’t reflect his insides in some ways as well. Not deserving, wanted, lonely. Francis doesn’t deserve to be judged in such a manner, that people will flee from him when they see the monster awake from its cage. He deserves to be loved, to be wanted. Francis deserved to be a greater hero.
Francis's face has a lot of problems like he does inside. What i mean is that he has many deficits on his face and a lot of problems in his head. I mean he want to kill Larry Lasalle. His in side are kind and and scared and is trying to forget the past, while his face is messed up and is not going to get fixed.
ReplyDeleteThe little boy that’s afraid of Francis echo’s the little boy inside of Francis. Francis doesn’t consider himself a ‘hero’ but a scared boy that joined the war as a coward, like the little boy looks like on the street, a coward facing the world. Francis is still that little boy deep down inside, he just won’t let his inner-self out because he’s still afraid. This echo’s Francis’s emotions in a certain time in his life. As a boy, Francis became scared and joined the army.
ReplyDeleteThe boy also does not reflect Francis’s inner-self. The boy on the street at least can turn back and look at what he’s afraid of again. Francis will never be able to face what he’s afraid of another time. The boy on the street is only scared as a little boy, where he’s allowed to be afraid of some things like a scary looking person like Francis. Francis has grown and time has passed since his experience through his fearful time. He shouldn’t be as afraid as the little boy on the street is. The little boy is brave to look at Francis, his fear, twice. Francis is a coward and won’t face his fear twice.

ReplyDeleteWhen Arthur River was drunk in the alley and began to talk about the “scared war”, I had no idea what he meant so I kept reading the paragraph over and over again. As I kept thinking about it though, I figured he was referring to all the most traumatizing moments of the war and how it shaped who he and others became. Arthur couldn’t understand why people wouldn’t talk about such a big part of their life. He wondered why all of his fellow war veterans had moved on and had seemed to forget all about the war. How can these people move on? After all we’ve been through, they won’t even talk about it? It was obvious that Arthur still had a big part of the war in him and he needed someone to share those moments with and the chance to connect with other veterans. I was happy to see that Francis understood what Arthur was saying; it was nice to see a connection like that.
It’s so important for veterans to talk about the war with other veterans and just people in general because it shows their pride and strength. We need veterans to share about life in the war because it helps us understand all the obstacles these men are facing and the risks they have to take for their country. I give lots of credit to people who are willing to talk about their experiences in the war because they’re not afraid to speak up and share what they went through and it shows that they don’t just walk away or forget big parts of their life. It’s always nice to talk with someone and realize you have something in common and that you can make a connection with them. When you can make a connection, you know that you are not alone.
When Francis sees this little boy on the street and he is scared of him because of his face, this resembles the person who he is not. I believe Francis is a warm hearted good person and just needs some mental help or therapy. How he looks on the outside is not a proper reflection of what is really in is heart.
ReplyDeleteFrancis’ burned up these contacts because he wants to be able to forget everything that has made is life so horrible. He wants to go back to being his old self, when really that person no longer exists. In my opinion he thinks burning these contacts will make him forget about his face, the doctors, and everything that they told him was going to heal. Even though nothing has come within an inch to healing near his face, heart, or identity.
ReplyDeleteEnrico means that Francis’ should do what is right in getting that horrible feeling out of his gut. These were all a bunch of different people he had seen, about his condition. He just wants to forget. Francis’ understands this concept so well because he has all these feeling bottle up inside him and needs to get rid of it somehow.
In the story Francis burns the lists of hospitals from Enrico and the phone number and address of doctor Abrams. I think he burned the number and address because he didnt want to be fixed, He didnt want plastic surgery. (if I recall Dr. Abrams is a plastic surgen) I think he finally realized that this is who he is now and he has to accept it. i Think he burned the hospital list because he doesn't want to end up in one. I know he didnt't enjoy his time in the hospital in England. I hate to say this but i feel that "proper method of disposal" means that he wants to take himself out. We already know that he tried to kill hiself by jumping on a granade, but it obvoiusly didn't work.

Francis really enjoyed the sting of air on his flesh, once he removed his bandages. Whenever he took off his moist bandages he could barely look himself in the mirror because of how horrible he looked. One day he went to find 221B on Baker Street from Sherlock Holmes. Without any bandages, people left him a wide separation between him and them. People could see his face with no nose, no ears, and pieces of flesh hanging from his cheeks. No wonder why the little boy was frightened by Francis. The little boy started to cry and ran to his mother in fear. Francis had not known what the boy was afraid of until he saw his face in a glass building. The little boy thought he was a monster which he was not. Francis was a hero and a poor boy with a damaged face that did not resemble who he is. His true face was being echoed by the one he had gotten from the war. This little reaction made Francis feel disturbed of his own face.
On pages 84 and 85, Francis shares that he burns up Dr. Abrams address and phone number in the kitchen sink, along with a list from Enrico that had a list of possible hospitals that he would chose to live in until he found his “proper method of disposal”. He burned the list of hospitals because Francis didn’t care anymore. He didn’t care whether he healed or not, just because he knew that would matter. All that mattered was hiding his face away from others to shield the shock of his disrepaired face and so they didn’t recognize that it was him, little Francis. By “method of disposal”, Enrico meant his means of dying. “I knew he meant by disposal because I had already planned my own method after my mission was completed.” Was stated by Francis after he remembered back to what Enrico had said. After Francis’s mission is over, he is probably going to kill himself, just as the man who killed Marie during her wedding at the Rec Center did.

ReplyDeleteOn page 83, Francis mentions a small boy on the street who is scared of him. Francis' face shows who he is and isn't on the inside.
Francis' face echoes who he is on the inside. Francis' face is broken and his heart is too. He loves Nicole but she broke his heart by hating him and leaving Frenchtown. Also, Larry broke Francis' confidence in him. Along with broken, Francis' face and life are a wreck. His life will be an even worse wreck once he kills Larry. Killing Larry does Francis no justice. It will only ruin his reputation.
Francis' face also doesn't reflect the person he is inside. It may look like Francis' life was always bad and terrible, but that's not the case. It used to be good and bright. His face also may convey that he is a nobody and that he is a mess. If people knew the truth, they wouldn't think that. Francis is an acquirer of the Silver Star, given for bravery and chivalry. Although he doesn't feel that he is brave and chivalrous inside, that's what everybody else thinks of him.
On page 83, a little boy is shown to be scared of Francis because of his face. His face shows a lot of things about him.

ReplyDeleteHeroes by Robert Cormier
When Francis walks down a street in London after his surgery, a little boy is scared of him. The little boy is scared of Francis’ face and thinks he is a monster. Many people look at Francis in a scared way because they have no idea what has happened to him. Francis’ face echo’s the person he is inside for a few different reasons.
Francis is a boy that had a great life when he was younger. As he got older, life began to twist for Francis and he became suicidal because he lost the girl that he loved for so long. His face echo’s him because in side he is a mess and his face is a mess. His face literally got blown off when he jumped into that grenade during the war. His face ended up in a terrible condition that cannot be healed properly. Also, his life is a mess because many things happened to get him to try to do crazy things. This started when the girl he loved, Nicole, mysteriously left Frenchtown one night after Larry came back from the war. From this, Francis wanted to kill himself and even decided to jump off a church steeple. But, he decided he didn’t want to put shame on his family and decided to die in the war against the Japanese/Germans. He didn’t die and made a new goal… to kill Larry LaSalle for harming Nicole. His life inside and face outside both echo each other.
His face doesn’t reflect the person he is inside because he was a loving and harmless child when he was younger. All he wanted to do was have friends and have the love of his life, Nicole. He was fun and great at table tennis which increased his social status and gained the love of his life. He had everything he ever wanted and his life wasn’t a mess at that point. It couldn’t have been better for Francis during this time period. After Nicole left, he changed dramatically and became a mess inside and out.
"The Scared war" is a war that's inside everysingle person. Arthur means that his war is inside him not outside as well. It means that although a World War is held outside, his war is completly scary and uncontainable.
ReplyDeleteIt's also really important for people who have returned from war to return back and tell the world their story. They talk with other veterans because it shows that it was not only he/she who endured it but there are brothers and sisters in the milatary who came back from the intense war. They can both talk about all the pain and sorrow from the war. But it's very important for the veterans to tell people who aren't even enlisted yet alone old enough to tell how scary war is. In this generation FPS(First Person Shooter) is at it's peak. Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare 1 and 2, Battlfield Bad Company 1 and 2 all these games appeal to people. SO they want to go to war themselves with knowledge of only games. Life isn't like that. "People who haven't experienced war find it enjoyable"-Albert Einstein. SO veterans should tell what the heck happens in the world
Arthur Rivier wants people to talk about “the scared war.” The scared war he is referring too is the part of the war where everyone is fearful of losing their life. The veterans had to dodge bullets and kill to survive. Everyone is fearful of losing their life, and many who enlisted in the war felt this way. Arthur tells Francis “God, but I was scared, Francis. I messed my pants. One day, running across an open field, so scared I **** my pants, bullets at my feet and everything let go...” Arthur was afraid of death, as well as Francis's comrade, Eddie Richards.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important for veterans to talk about their experiences with other veterans so they won't feel lonely and understand the fear that everyone who fought in the war faced. Also, since veterans share similar experiences, veterans can easily become friends because they both fought and understood how scary the real battlefield is. They should share their experiences with non-veterans as well, so non-veterans can understand the importance of life. Many lost their lives fighting for their country, and there is only one life for everybody,

ReplyDelete2. when Francis sees the little boy on the streets the little boy is scared because of how he looks. this shows francis thast he fave is weird and sometimes scares people. the little boy doesnt know any better than to look at his face and be scared. the litte boy may have thought that Francis was going to hurt but Francis would never hurt anyone. the little boy is judging him on how he looks on the inside. everybody has the same inside and just because he looks weird doesnt mean that he has a bad inside and is mena he could be the nicest person and look the scariest.

ReplyDeleteFrancis inside is a mess. Just like his face. His emotions are mixed, his heart broken, and his mind filled with memories. His face is torn up like his heart, his skin patchy like his emotions, and the memory of the grenade is the like the memories that still linger in his mind. Though he looks brave on the outside because of the uniform & scars, he still tried to commit suicide. He didn't join the war to be brave, he joined the war to cover up his mistakes. He didn't save his mates by jumping on that grenade, it was his chance to end his life. He isn't a hero, he's selfish.

ReplyDeleteArthur refers to WWII as “the scared war”. In the book, Arthur talks about how all of the soldiers were scared. He detailed the war experiences by talking about soldiers “messing their pants” and “bullets at their feet”. Francis agreed as he thought about his experiences, such as the smells and sights. Arthur talks about how the media made the war sound positive by talking about the heroes, but the heroes were only scared soldiers coming home from “the scared war”.
It is important for veterans to talk about their experiences so that they don’t forget them. It also helps the cope with the trauma when they talk to someone else who went through similar experiences. It will help them feel better because they won’t feel alone. Veterans want to share with non-veterans so they know the detailed truth of “the scared war” experiences.
on page 83 francis metions a little boy who was scared of him in the streets, francis' face echos the person that he is inside because his face doesnt show any love or mercy and neither does francis he went back to frenchtown for the only reason he could which was revenge, he wanted revenge on larry lasalle for what he had done. but it doesnt reflect the person that francis is inside because his face shows bravery and courage even thoguh on the inside francis is still a scared little boy who is angry at the person he once loved.
