Wk. 1 Option #6 Philosophy of Life

Prompt:
On page 16, Lily mentions how she wrote "My Philosophy of Life" for a school assignment. Sue Monk Kidd also had to write one when she was a little girl, maybe that's where she got the idea from.

Response Requirement: (Use a quote that supports one part of her philosophy.)

* Based on what you know so far, what would be her philosophy?
* What is your own philosophy of life?

  1. As is clear with all 14-year olds, Emily's life revolves around her social life and herself. She wants, like everyone, more than ever to be popular and beautiful. On page 8, she says, "I needed all the help that fashion could give me, since no one, not a single person, had ever said, 'Lily, you are such a pretty child'." Many other pages in Chapter 1 depict her view on how she oh so badly wants that chin of pretty girls, and that although her mother did not have "the chin", she was still pretty, which gives Emily hope. This philosophy, perhaps, borders on narcissism were it not for Emily's second obsession with small insects and her mother.

My philosophy on life is that "If someone else can do it, why should I?" Namely, if I am cozy and comfortable on the couch watching TV, but I want the remote, why should I get it when my brother can get it and give it to me? Yes, I am lazy.

  2. "My Philosphy of Life." Most people create or get a philosphy around the age of 16. Lily has seen lots in her life, from the punnishments of T-Ray to the death of her mother. I think her philosphy would stress a good appearence because she never had a mother to show her how. Also, she would want to have a more adventurous life than selling peaches all day. She would want to stress a better education. My own philosphy of life is to work hard for what I want and at the same time to have fun while doing activities.

  3. Even though Lily’s teacher told her that she was too young to have a Philosophy of Life, I think Lily had gone through a lot more of “life” that no one, even adults, especially children, should have to go through. I think Lily’s philosophy will be about never making mistakes. She made a large one, and the way to have a happy life is to not make any. Also, she would say that dying isn’t the worst part, and that living is. “People who think dying is the worst don’t know a thing about life.” My philosophy is to live life to the fullest. Smile every day, and pass it on. Enjoy the life you have, because it is the only one you’ve got. Live, laugh, love! Needless to say, my philosophy of life is polar opposite of Lily’s, who experienced some troubles in her young life.

  4. Lily would obviously have the philosophy of you have to do what the circumstances require. Like when she said to Rosaleen "why didn't you just apologize". If she had then she wouldn't have gotten beaten. Or how Lily kneeled in grits so T-Ray wouldnt find out about her box. My philosophy is live and learn. That is because in my experiences i learned a lot and they help affect what i do now.

  5. Lily Philosophy is to become a writer and write real books. She wants to also got to college and that means she needs to get away from T-Ray.

My pholosophy is to get on a division 1 college basket ball team and them become a architect for big business buildings.

  6. Lily's teacher said to her that she was to young to have a philosophy of life. The teacher believes that in order to have a philosophy of life, you have to be old and experience many things. Lily may not be old but she has been through a lot of tough circumstances that have gotten her to a point where she does have a philosophy of life. I think Lily's philosophy of life would be that you should always do things that empower you and don't have any regrets. She said to Rosaleen after she got arrested, "Why didn't you just apologize?" Rosaleen didn't apologize because that wasn't her belief and that didn't empower her.
