  1. The moon in this chapter symbolizes something lost. When August called May's name, there was no response but the moon. May was gone and August new...everyone new that she was in a better place now. With her sister April, and her grandparents and her parents together and happy. The moon is a key part of this story, it symbolizes a loss or a loved one...and this is what happened in this chapter.

  2. On page 189 when the moon is mentioned for the third time as a symbol, the sentence "Just the night bird singing up the moon." is the third time it is used. In this sentence it is the sound of the night. Also, when someone dies or is about to die there is usually crows around. A night bird could be a crow and it is taking up the quiet sound of the night. It is like the 'night bird' is trying to give the hint of death before it is discovered.

  3. The moon is a very important symbol in the story. In the beginning of the book when Lily and Rosaleen sleep by the river, Lily has a dream that the moon breaking apart, which symbolizes that her life is falling apart. Similar, Kidd talks abotu a rocket landing on the moon, which symbolizes that Lily will scratch the surface of learning about her mother.
In the begining of chapter 10, the moon is referenced yet another time. "A night bird was singing from a tree branch, just sining its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put there to sing the moon up to the top of the sky." This symbolizes the events in chapter 10 because of the fact that May dies. People say that when a loved one dies, you can see a black crow flying in the sky which is what happened in this case. The girls did not yet know it, but the bird in front of the moon was a very sad sign. The moon, on the other hand, plays an important role in this chapter as well. This quote states that the bird is singing the moon uo farther into the sky. I believe that this shows how little hope Lily has about fining out about her mother. The moon was already symbolized as the surface that Lily will scratch with information of her mother. And Lily feels as if now that May is dead, her chances are dead.

  4. The mention of the moon on page 189 foreshadows something ominous. The way that it describes the bird actively and hurriedly singing at the moon shows that time is running out. The moon so far has symbolized people's lives, such as Lily's life falling apart and Lily learning about the mystery of her mother's life. Now it's about May's life. The quote "like it was there to put the moon up to the top of the sky" shows how the bird was singing May's life away, which was getting farther and farther away. "And I didn't hear the night bird singing anymore" shows that their time to find May is up. The bird singing at the moon was signalling that time was running out; another life was to be changed in the face of the moon.

  5. The moon symbolizes that their world is brakeing apart. May just died and that is not a good thing. The police is there and are confused for why Roselene and Lily are there. It isnt really going well for them. Also Zach got arrested and that is how this whole big mess started. Like everything, everything heals. Since everything heals that means that everything will get better so everyone still should have faith becuase everything is going to be allright.

  6. In the beginning of chapter ten it says,"A night bird was singing from a tree brach, just singing its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put there to sing the moon to the top of the sky." In this quote the moon symbolizes the strength of the the birds voice. Also it shows how beautiful a birds cherp can be.

  7. A full moon tends to represent the following:death, suicide, crime, and major disasters. Also, there was a full moon earlier, and now there's another one month later. The full cyle of the moon could also represent a life cycle, from begging to the end. The moon could also represent life, and protection, considering night animals are most active during a full moon and the fact that it is light against a black sky. In this case, the moon would represent death though.
As for the singing night bird, it symbolizes something else. Night birds sing at night, if they are disturbed or woken suddenly. This could have happened when May committed suicide?

  9. The moon is symbolized as May. The moon is such a great thing, although one day it WILL have to die out. This is a connection towards May because the same thing happened to her. However, the moon can apply to Lily and Rosaleen because the moon will die out and soon Lily and Rosaleen will crack and HAVE to tell the truth.

  10. In the beginning of the book, Lily dreams while sleeping on the riverbank with Rosaleen about the moon falling apart, symbolizing how her life was falling apart as a result of leaving home. In the beginning of chapter 10 on page 189, the moon is mentioned again. In the passage, the moon symbolizes the death of May who has joined Mary, who lives on the moon. Unknown to June, August, Lily, and Rosaleen, who continue to search for her, May had died; she had gone up to the moon with Mary. On page 189, it says “The night bird was singing from a tree branch, just singing its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put there to sing to the moon up on the top of the sky.”, showing that the bird was directing them to tell them May was up in Heaven, as if Mary were the actual bird pointing the way to heaven. It also says on the next paragraph after they continue shouting May’s name, “We went along shouting her name, but no sound came back. Just the night bird singing up to the moon.” Often in poetry and stories, the moon is related to the death of someone. This symbolism follows that pattern.

  11. The moon in this chapter is used in context with the following, “A night bird was singing from a tree branch, just singing its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put up there to sing the moon up to the top of the sky.” I think the moon in this chapter symbolizes May’s lost soul, now that she has passed. “Singing the moon up to the top of the sky,” deals with everybody letting May go, letting her move on to her life in heaven. Now the Boatwright sisters have to finish and complete May’s death wish and live when it is their time to live, as May has stated in her suicide letter. The Boatwright sisters and their guest ended up having vigil services with May’s casket in the room for everybody to say their last good buys and let May’s fragile spirit float away with relief and no pain.

  12. The moon was mentioned a few times before chapter 10 in the book and each of those times symbolized different things. On page 189, the book says, "A night bird was singing from a tree branch, just singing its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put there to sing the moon up to the top of the sky." This time, I think that the moon symbolizes everybody's attitude when they were searching for May and it also symbolizes May.
The text says that the bird was put there to sing the moon up to the sky. So, that means that without the bird, the moon would fall. This relates to everybody searching for May. They're doing their best to not "fall down" and lose all hope. They keep searching - their moon is at the top of the sky.
This symbolizes May too because it's like the times when she used to sing "Oh Susanna!". She would sing "urgently and feverishly", doing her best to keep her spirits up. Just like the bird who was keeping the moon up.
I think that the moon in this case symbolizes everyone's attitude in searching for May and it also symbolizes May.

  13. The moon may not seem as an important part in the book The Secret Life of Bees, but it is. You just have to go beyond the text to see it. Liil has a dream about the moon falling apart. If you went deeper in the text, you would find it symbolizes that her world is falling apart. Also, an allusion is in the text about a rocket landing on the moon. This could be brought farther into detail and mean that Lily would find out more about her mother. In the beginning of Chapter 10, the moon is metioned for the third time. "just the night bird singing up to the moon, " symobolizes that May has gone to heaven. At first, some may not think the sentence is important, but it actually is. The moon, surprisingly, plays an important role in The Secret Life of Bees.

  14. In the beginning of chapter 10, the moon is mentioned again. It says, "A night bird was singing from a tree branch, just singing its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put there to sing the moon up to the sky." This time, I believe the moon symbolizes Lily's mood at that moment. This is what I believe the moon symbolizes because it says that the bird is singing the moon up to the sky. With all the worry everybody's feeling when looking for May, the night bird was singing beautifully in the tree. This would seem to lift everybody's moods up a bit, just like the bird's song was lifting up the moon. In that part, it also says, "We went along shouting her name, but no sound came back. Just the night bird singing up the moon." I believe the moon symbolizes Lily's mood here because there is silence after they call May's name. This draws up even more worry, and the bird's chirping would provide the littlest bit of comfort to Lily. The moon, when being sung up to the sky by the night bird, again, symbolized something very important.

  15. On page 189 it says that "A night bird was singing from a tree branch, just singing its heart out, urgent and feverish, like it was put there to sing the moon up to the top of the sky." I believe that the moon in this chapter represents May dieing. Later on in the chapter May commits suicide when she hears the new that Zach is in jail. Tee bird singing represents The mourning of August, June, and everybody else. And the moon being risen up to the top of the sky represents may going to heaven or where ever they believe she will go. So in this specific scenario it represents May taking her own life and going to the next life.

  16. When the moon is mentioned in chapter 10 it represents August, June, Lily, and Rosaleen looking for May. It says "the bird was trying to sing the moon up to the top of the sky". The top of the sky is representing May. Their conscious represents the singing bird. So it's their conscious singing them to May. Which is very different than what the moon represented last time.
