Journal Response #1

Pretend you had one hour to prepare to go into hiding.  You can NEVER return to your home.  You cannot carry a suitcase; it would be obvious you were going into hiding.  It is winter, therefore VERY cold outside and there is limited food where you are going.  What items would you take with you?  How would you disguise these items and how would you carry them?  Extra credit (10 points): Bring in your "me box" and share what you would bring with the class and why.

• You cannot carry a suitcase.

• You need to bring clothes with you to last at least a few days. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to wash clothes all the time. Maybe you should load up on underwear.

• You may only bring one small electronic item. (Electricity will be limited after all!)

• Decide what items you absolutely cannot live without for a long time.

• There are rations on items. Therefore, some items like nice shampoo, perfume, or deodorant may become luxury items. Perhaps bring them with you. Your family will be with you, so perhaps you will divvy up items and share them.
• Everything has to fit in your pockets and be relatively quiet or silent.

  1. When the Franks and the Van Daans went into hiding, they could not bring many items, because it would have looked suspicious to the Nazis if they had loaded-up pockets and suitcases. If I was given limitations and restrictions to what I could bring into hiding, I would have a tough time deciding what to bring. As Anne and the families did, I would wear layers and layers of clothing to ensure that I would have enough garments for a few days. I would have to being my iPod, because I love music and I can’t imagine being without it. I wouldn’t bring my phone because that would just make me feel more and more “out of it” when I am texting and calling people who aren’t in hiding. Also, it would make a great deal of noise. I would also bring with me a doll I have had since I was two. It was from my aunt for Christmas and means a lot to me. It’s hard to think of things that are small, non electronic, but still special to me. It would be quite a scene walking down the sidewalk with my computer crammed into my pocket, wouldn’t it? This really brings my necessities into perspective, because now I realize that the most important things to me are objects that take away from activities and family. Such as this, the computer; my phone, my iPod, and my radio are top things I would think of bringing if I could. I would bring toiletries along too, because when you have so many people crammed into a tiny place, hygiene and health are important. I would also bring my Bible. Now that I have pondered and mulled over this question, I realize what is really important, and what should be more important to me.

  2. On a cold winter night with a blizzard blowing by and I had exactly one hour to pack, eat, and get out I’d bring things to protect me from dying and go into hiding, not look that suspicious, have enough clothes to change into for one week, and bring some of my own personal items I’d bring some stuff, not a lot but some. I would bring lots of boxers or undergarments at least 10 pairs to suffice me for the week; on top of that some shorts at least 4, jeans at least 3, and sweatpants at least the whole week. For my top I’d bring tank top at least 4, t-shirts at least 3, one sweatshirt, and one enormous snow jacket. I would bring a big snow jacket because it allows space to hold food in and not look that suspicious because everyone knows snow jackets are very bulky. The one item I would bring would be my Ipod touch because if I Jailbreak it before I leave; I can get free apps, such as texting, games, etc. It would work better than a phone because I can text and surf the internet to check out the news on what’s happening. But other than that, some very important things I can’t live without would be a bed, some sort of defensive weapon, and food. Some of my luxury items such as deodorant, toothpaste, tooth brush are all needed. Because of that I would bring deodorant, my little brother toothpaste, my baby brother soup, my mom tooth brushes, and my dad some shampoo. All this would fit into my pockets because I have so much clothes on and I have a enormously huge jacket on.

  3. One hour isn't a very long amount of time, compared to the usual time it takes to pack for a long (1-month) vacation. And add to that that I can NEVER return to my home; well I'd have to choose wisely. So these are my choices and how I'd disguise them:
-Books that I can read more than once(small paperbacks)
    -Large winter jacket
-Lots of T-Shirts(worn under the jacket)
-Two notebooks with a lot of paper(in coat pocket)
    -2 Mechanical Pencils(hopefully I could find lead)
-Cell phone+Solar charger(wrapped in foil to look like food)
    -Plenty of underwear(I'd wear them)
-Couple of sweatpants, some shorts(wear the shorts under the sweatpants)
    -Box with spices(for the food)
-Swiss army knife or other pocket multitool
-First Aid Kit(one that will fit inside coat pocket)
    -Couple of Tennis balls
-Sports towel(Because it's super-absorbant but small enough to fit inside my pockets when folded)
-1 gallon (empty) ziploc bag(in pocket)
-Small box with comb, brush, shampoo, bar soap, etc.
    -College savings (to bribe people!)

  4. I would take my french horn case and fill it with clothes (doesn't look at all like a suitcase). I would also wear as many items as I could without looking conspicuous. I would put books and my ipod and a charger into my french horn case too. Unfortunately I would not be able to bring my french horn so my case would have lot's of space. I would perhaps put in perfume to be sold when food becomes scarce and maybe some spices. I would also bring one (or all) of my cats. Lastly I would bring some soap and shampoo. All of this would be going into my pockets, french horn case, and cat carriers.

  5. If i was going into hiding i would take my laptop, which isn't too heavy and since it is winter i would put it in a string bag a out it under my coat in my back. Although if i couldn't bring that i would being my ipod/iphone. i would put a jacket on that has a lot of compartments. i would take a lot of under garments. Also i would take one pair of shoes that i can wear in all seasons, because i wouldn't know when we would come out. I would need to take a little something that replaces all my family members that are not there. i would also bring a notebook and a pen like Anne did, to write about what we did and how scary it was being in hiding. Considering it was winter i would layer my clothes i would probably wear jeans, shorts then a pair of sweat pants, on top i would wear a long sleeve, t-shirt, sweatshirt, and a jacket, and i would make sure all the clothes i was wearing had pockets that were big. Those are things that i would bring into hiding.

  6. If I had 1 hour to gather all the things that I would need to go into hiding, I would know exactly what to take. First, because it is winter, I would be able to wear many, many layers of clothing. I would wear 2 undershirts, 2 short-sleeved shirts, 2 long sleeved shirts, one sweatshirt, one light jacket, and my heavy winter jacket. For pants, I would wear multiple pairs of underwear, my two favorite pairs of basketball shorts, a pair of jeans, and a pair of sweatpants. Although this may be uncomfortable for the time we are going to the hiding place, it would pay off because I would have a large amount of clothing for the time that we would be in hiding.
I found it to be very easy to know what I would be putting in the pockets of my jackets and many pairs of pants. For me, it was a no brainier that I will be bringing my iPod Touch as well as it’s charger. Also I would want to bring a few books with me (I love to read). I would take a good book that I have already read as well as two or three that I would like to read. Finally, if it fits, I would take a few of the many board games I own. Playing Scrabble, Monopoly, Risk, The Game Of Life, and sorry never gets old. This is what i would gather if i had 1 hour to go into hiding.

  7. If I had only 1 hour to pack for hiding i would bring the bare nessesities and if i could only a few pleasure items. And since i could not have a suitcase and it's the dead of winter i would ware all the cloths that I would need. i would ware 2 tank tops, 2 short sleved shirts,(for when it got warmer) 4 long sleaved shirts, my favorite sweat shirt and my winter coat. Also I would ware many under garments,(including socks, 2 pairs of sofie shorts, a pair of leggings, 2 pairs of jeans, anda pair of large sweat pants. to top it all off a baseball cap,a head band and on lots of hair ties.
Aside from clothing i would stuff all the chocolate chip granola bars and candy into my pockets. i would also bring a pack of gum and hide a small orange in my hat!
If i had room after all that i would bring my ipod and its charger. i wouldn't bring my cell phone because i wouldn't be able to call or txt anyone. But i would have to bring my baby blanket and of corse my inhaler.

  8. Being that it is winter I must choose cautiously about what I decide to wear for clothing and other needs. I will decide to wear multiply layers of clothing, such as two pairs of pajamas (sweats and a long & short sleeve shirt), jeans, leggings, a couple shirts, a dress, and a sweatshirt. To keep all my clothing items covered I shall bring or wear a big winter coat over it all. The coat being quite large and puffy no one will suspect and thing. Most pairs of clothing are made with a few different pockets. In the several pockets that I acquire I will pack necessary items like body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and other necessary items for our cleansing needs. I will bring my cell phone as my necessary electric item, not because I cannot live with out it but for emergencies. Even though Miep would be able to provide us with books I will bring a couple of my favorite paper books that will not stick out of my pockets. Like Anne I will keep one last important item with me at all times, a journal to write down anything good, bad, or just to write for my enjoyment. Also I will pack any medicine that I can fit like my inhaler or pills like Advil. I would pack the following items for they have a purpose that could make the difference in saving someone in the long run whether with knowledge, medicine, food, or saying a simple word.

  9. During this time, we would not be active very much so I would load up with two pairs of cloths for each season. I would also stuff some other additional clothing for the night time. When I go, I must bring my lucky blanket because it helped me through some nerve wrecking times when I was young. Since I will be having many layers of clothing underneath my coat, I would stuff my phone, itouch, pictures of my parents pets siblings and other family members into the pockets of those clothing underneath my jacket. For my last item, I would bring my ring that my grandpa gave to my parents before my birth. This always helped me keep strength and courage through rough times because my grandpa passed away before I was born.

  10. If I had one hour to prepare myself for hiding, i try to layer on as heavily as possible. I would first put one white t-shirt with a long sleeve shirt over that, then a flannel over that. Over those layers, I would wear two hoodies and a large winter coat. I would wear a hat and scarf for my head to keep me toasty warm. For my pants, I would wear jeans and shorts over that, with sweat covering everything else. I would wear at least 3 socks, 2 short and 1 long, and a pair of nice sturdy sneakers. For what I would bring, my most important item would be an iPod touch, with the recharger. Also on my list of things to bring are deodorant, hotel shampoos, a pencil, and a few pieces of paper. Most importantly, I would need my family.

  11. While preparing to go into hiding, I would bring many things with me. I would wear large snow boots and inside would be underwear, socks and a small ball (to play with when I almost die or boredom) I would were a tank-top, a polo t-shirt and a sweatshirt. Inside the pockets of my sweatshirt I would have slippers, which would help keep my feet warm and make sure I don’t make too much noise while walking around during hiding. I would also have in my pockets an I-pod touch. This can send e-mail’s, Facebook messages, aim messages, video chat and can keep me busy by playing games. But I would only contact the people who know I am in hiding. Over my tank-top, polo and sweatshirt I would were a large jacket and a large snow vest. These two would keep me warm and the pockets would hold my toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, soap and deodorant. Then I would wear a hat that would hold a book with many pages. On the bottom I would wear leggings, jeans and sweat pants and the pockets would have granola bars, t-shirts and a small blanket in them. This way I could have everything I needed to go into hiding.

  12. If I were to go into hiding I would put several layers of clothes on. I would wear several pairs of underwear under each of my clothes. I would wear different layers of pants and several pairs of shirts. I would also put on several jackets; for I wouldn't know if it was going to be hot or cold in the hiding spot. I would put on a backpack, as perhaps people would think I was going to school. So that I could fit my shampoo and soap, and some extra food that I could eat quickly and incase there was food that didn't quiet satisfy me. I wouldn't be able to live a very long time without my cat. So I would have to try and hold my cat and fit food in my backpack. I think those are the things that would be the most necessary to bring. If it was in this day and age, I would also have to either bring my cell phone or computer. I would probably bring my computer rather than my cell phone. The computer you can play games on and maybe even use the internet. Those are the things that I would have to bring into hiding with me.

  14. If I had to go into hiding for a very long time, I would bring a few things that are very necessary for me to survive. The first and most important thing that I would bring along with me is my asthma medicine. I would hide one inhaler and many refills in my pockets. Next, I would bring many items of clothing. First, I would wear several layers of clothes so that I won’t have to bring a suit case. I would wear a big hat to cover my head and ears. Also, I would wear gloves, a scarf, and layers of thick socks. I would also wear a big, heavy winter coat with five of my favorite shirts under it and a sweat shirt. I would also store toothpaste and brush, bottles of shampoo, and deodorant in the large pockets. I would also put about 30 pencils in these pockets so I can write and draw. I would wear many layers of pants starting with four pairs of underwear, then two pairs of shorts, followed by two jeans and one sweat pant. I would carry money in my shoes that I would wear and my phone in my pocket. I would bring my phone’s charger with me so that I can keep updated with my friends by text, which is relativly quiet. These are just a few of the many important items that I would bring with me if I had to go into hiding. These items would last me a very long time and I wouldn't be able to live without many of these things.

If I had to go into hiding I would prepare myself the best I could. I would definitely stock up on undergarments and I would also bring a lot of clothes. Most of the clothes I would bring would have to have pockets because then I could put more smaller items in all the pockets, the more pockets the better. I would put shampoo bottles and conditioner bottles in the pockets of the jackets I brought. I would also bring my cell phone and the charger this way if I want to get into contact with people quietly I could text message them. I would also bring any foods I could carry in my pockets, like bags of cereal, dried fruits, and things like that. In one of my layers of clothing I would also attempt to hide my dog, I love my dog to death and I absolutely cannot live without him. I would also tell my family my idea about what to bring and listen to them about their ideas. Another thing I couldn’t live without is the picture of me and my Grandpa before he passed away; I’d tuck that into one of my shirts. There is also a stuffed unicorn I’ve had my entire life and I can’t ever bring myself to get rid of it, so I would bring that too, to keep the good memories. I would also want to bring batteries and a portable DVD player for entertainment. With all of the inventions in technology, we have so many things to entertain us that we can’t really ever get bored.

  16. There are too many things that I don’t think I can live without but there’s so many things that I can live without. If I really think about it, I’m able to narrow down what I need to have with me to a few things if I suddenly have to go into hiding. There are many things that I would like to bring with me that would only be able to fit into a suitcase or bag. It would look much too obvious if I were to walk around with a suitcase or bag and ever arrive back home. It would seem too obvious that I had gone into hiding. For clothes, I would layer as many things on as possible. Because it would be winter when I do this, I would wear a big, puffy winter coat so the bulging from the clothing underneath won’t look as suspicious as it would in the summer time. As for shampoos and conditioners, I would only bring one bottle of each to split between my family and myself. For food and drinks, I would stuff as many juice boxes, tiny packaged foods, and fruits and vegetables that are chopped up in Tupperware containing so they don’t go bad) as I can in my many pants pockets from the variety of pants that I am wearing. There would be one electronic device I would bring that I couldn’t imagine surviving in hiding without. It would have to be an iPad or Mac book laptop. Because these items are extremely thin, they would be easy to hide in a pocket or something. Also, since they are connected to internet, we could stay in-tact with others and find any news that we should know about. But, you can only really estimate what to bring because it was impossible to know how long you were going to be in hiding for. You could never know what to bring or how much of it to bring.

  17. The sheer fact of hiding for almost forever, paralyzes me. I think if I had to hide for over three days, I would start having paranoia. I dislike leaving areas that I am familiar with, because I feel like I am entering an exotic territory. Even though I would probably last a month before giving up and handing myself into the police, I would bring a few special items with me into hiding. Since I love music, mostly dubstep, I would bring my iPod, which could last me six hours before it dies. I would also bring photos of my friends and I, including vacation photos, so that I could remember all the good times I had. These photos would push me to continue to live, since once I get out of hiding, I'm going to spend a month in freedom and relaxing. I would also bring a journal, just like Anne since I might as well record my thoughts, feelings, and events that occur while I am in hiding. Lastly, I would bring a deck of playing cards, in case I ever got extremely bored.
Thanks to the cold weather, I don't think anybody would notice anything suspicious if I wear three or four layers of clothing. Because of all this clothing, I would be able to hide things pretty easily. My iPod could easily fit into my pocket, as well as the deck of playing cards, but I might have problems with the journal. I could either attempt to fit it into the pocket of my sweatshirt. Or place it between the second and third layer of my clothes. Although, if I put the journal between layers of clothing, there is a possibility that it may fall out. However, it's a risk that I'm willing to take.

  18. If I were to go into hiding, I would bring clothes and personal items. I have this traditional dress from my mother’s island to keep me warm during the winter time. First I would bring other clothes as well. For example I would carry fifteen pairs of underwear, three bras, two pairs of shorts and jeans, five shirts, one sweater, and three pairs of socks, and one pair of flats. The dress’s skirt is made out of wool, so you can imagine how warm it is. There is a white thick loose blouse that is tucked into the skirt, white tights, red flats, an apron on top of the skirt and a head piece. Some items I would bring would be a book, a notebook, pencils, pens, cross to pray every day, pictures, old Croatian song, jewelry box, tooth paste and tooth brush, and my glasses.
The only problem is how will I carry all of those items? The clothes are very simple, I wear as much as I can and whatever cannot fit I will shove it in my pockets. My personal items will be carried in a box or in my school bag. This way it wouldn’t look like I am moving away. I wouldn’t carry any electronics because I don’t like to use them at all. The only time I do is when I have homework or when I have nothing better to do. My schedule will be sleeping and maybe some writing and then just listen to everybody telling secrets to each other. I just know that will be fun. Then I wouldn’t need a television. My parents would carry other supplies like food and their clothes as well as my brother.

  20. If i could never return home and the only things that i could bring would be all my moms diamonds. I would sew them if to my clothes so if i ever escaped i could sell them and then make money.i would also bring family photos because you will never forget them and they cant be replaced. I would put the photos in my pocket. I would also a small christmas orniment. So i could always remember the christmas spirt and it would always be with me . I would put the orniment in my glove and it would keep my hand warm to . I would layer up for the could because you can always take the layers off. If i had to take one eletronic i would take my self phone and sew it inside my first layer so i could keep in touch with my family. This is what i would bring with me on my journey

  21. If I was going into hiding like the Franks, I would have a few items on my list. Most importantly, I would bring my stuffed Winnie the Pooh. When I was born, I got a stuffed Pooh Bear and was in LOVE with it. Never once have I slept without it and I can't imagine living without him. Next, I would of course, bring extra clothes; shirts, pants, socks, and underwear. In order for the clothes and my Pooh to arrive at the destination, I would put multiple clothes on at once and hide Winnie the Pooh in a shirt or pants pocket. Also, I would bring a radio to be able to listen to the news each night. I wouldn't be able to be in hiding for such a long time, like the Franks, without a source of what is going on the the world today. With these 3 items, I would be able to stay in hiding as long as I would need to.

  22. If I had one hour to pack belongings before I went into hiding, I would be well, stressed. Should I bring this, or should I bring that? Difficult, huh? But, if I did have to choose things I would defiantly bring the most useful, sentimental, and the most entertaining out of the bunch. As it is an necessity, I would obviously bring a boatload of underwear, because if you don’t have enough, well let’s just say it would go so well. I would try to wear as much clothes as possible. The heaviest jackets and clothes to keep me nice and toasty, like a marshmallow on fire, well maybe not that warm. To keep me entertained, I would defiantly bring my Blackberry. The compact electronic device can serve many purposes, internet, music, pictures, messaging, calendar, and videos. Possibly to have a video diary, instead of a written one, that would be nice  Even in a small area, I would obviously care about my appearance and overall hygiene, but who doesn’t, so take one guess at what else I would bring. If you guesses my small and portable hotel shampoo and conditioner, your right. Something a person just can’t live without. Because I don’t want to carry everything, I would have my parents carry other soaps and necessities needed throughout the day. What can I say, I am not a living suitcase. Living in hiding wouldn’t be the greatest thing in the world, but with these belongings it can make it just the slightest bit homier.

  23. I would bring to pairs of basketball pants which i would hide under my pants, and i would wear 3 pairs of pants with my basketball shorts at the sametime to hide them.I would put on 10 pairs of socks on. I would wear three sohrt sleve shirts then 4 long sleve shirts on. For heavt clothing i would have on 5 sweatshirts and one big jacket over all of it so no one see's and just thinks im a big person. For entertainment items i would bring my cellphone and put that in my basketball shorts.I would take my ipod touch and headphones and put it in my butt pocket. I would take my labtop and put it under my shirt so no one see's it and i could keep up with news and things. I would take my pocket knife and money so i could buy things secretly and use my pocket knife for situations. If i have enough time i would try and bring my two cats so they don't end up being killed. When we can take showers i would bring some shampoo so i don't stink up the place. These are the items i would try to bring.

  24. If I had only one hour to prepare for going into hiding, I would bring the following. Of course, I would bring lots of clean clothes. I would wear most of the shirts and sweatshirts on at the same time while on the way to the hiding location, so people wouldn't be suspicious. It is winter, after all. I would carry the other clothes in my sweatshirt pockets or other places I could fit them. If I could bring only 1 electronic item, I would definitely bring my cell phone. My phone can keep me entertained no matter how long the time, with its various games and other things. One thing that I absolutely can't live without is my cat. In the diary of Anne Frank, Peter had brought his cat into hiding, so I'm sure I could find a way to bring mine. All of these items would be what I would choose to bring if I had to go into hiding.
