Wk 2: Journal Response Option 5

  1. Prepare a holiday gift list for your family as Anne did.  Include only items that cost no money.  Write an explanation of why each gift is just right for the person receiving it.

  2. Mom: Hand Print
Every year since I was just a little baby, on Christmas, along with her gift, I give my mom a card. Inside the cards I usually write something short like “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I love you.” With that, I put a hand print in. I will either trace my hand or stick it in paint and put in on the card. I am not sure why, but my mom LOVES hand prints. She has every hand card I have ever given her saved in a draw in her office. Sometimes I find her looking at them and comparing sizes to see how much my hand had grown that year! 

    Grandma: Pictures
We have a lot of traditions in my family. Another tradition that we have is every year, I give my grandmother a scrap book. In that book, I put in pictures that have been taken that year. I add pictures of the school photo of all her grand children, copies of certificates and diplomas that people in our family had received that year and of course pictures taken of all of us on vacation, birthday parties, and holidays. My grandma loves these scrap books. I think that it is a very cute and inexpensive way to show somebody that you really care about them.

    Dad: Coupons
In the Diary of Anne Frank play, Anne gives her mother coupons that are good for ten hours of Anne’s time, going towards whatever her mother pleases. I thought this was a very thoughtful idea. A twist off of that is giving my father coupons good for specific things. For example, one would say “Take out the trash.” Another might say “Clean your room” or “Unload the dishwasher.” I think my dad would appreciate this, although he has me do these things without the coupons anyway. Haha!!

    Oma (Dutch for Grandma): Coupons
My Oma loves coupons. Not like the type I described for my dad, but actual coupons. Whenever she gets a coupon for something, she buys the item. One time, she bought a big bag of dog food, but she doesn’t have a dog. I asked her why and she told me she had a coupon for it. I never quiet understood that. For Christmas, it would be unusual but thoughtful if I went through coupon books and looked for really good coupons for my Oma.

  3. If I could only get my family Christmas presents that involved spending no money, i would get them as followed:
I would bake my dad cookies. He has a huge sweet tooth and would much rather have something made from the heart than a material item, anyway.
I would burn my brother a CD. He listens to really great music, but it's slightly different than mine. He would probably like a lot of my music though, and he is always up for learning about up and coming bands.
I would give my sister any old clothing that I don't want, but re-design it to fit her tastes more. She steals my clothes often, and she's always asking me to make her something, so this would be a great gift for her. And would also be a lot of fun for me, because I love sewing but have yet to make something for someone else.
My mom would be the hardest to get something for. She tends to like material items most, but because of the circumstance I would probably make her a really great card. My mom loves when I make nice cards for her, and If i put enough time and effort into it, I know it would really touch her.

  4. Mom: A couple of free massage tickets because she loves massages and needs them because of stress.
Dad: A day to sleep at our house because of my parents’ divorce and he really misses us and our home.
Jonathan (brother): One of my used air soft guns because he’s always wanted one but never had the money to purchase one.
Jules (brother): A chance to boss me around for a week because he’s probably tired of always being the youngest… so I’ll let him be in charge for a week.

  5. Dad: For my dad, I would make a ball out of fabric sewn together with a ball of old, ratty fabric. He loves to play ball and can always find the time for it.
Mom: For my mom, I would make a dishcloth because she loves to cook, but always ends up with a mess.
Older Brother: For my brother, I would write a book using the paper from my diary and then sew it together with fabric as binding.
Younger Brother: For my brother, I would sew together a stuffed animal and stuff it with cotton for my pillow. He gets scared at night, and I believe it would distress him.

  7. Holiday Gift List:
    Mom:
I would give my Mom one of my Barbie’s from when I was little. This is because when she was little her favorite thing to play with was her Barbie’s. She would sit there and play with them with her two sisters all day and all night. It would bring back the fondest memories of her childhood.
    Dad:
I would give my Dad a tree. I would give him a tree because he loves nature. He loves to go for walks at night. On the weekends when he is not working he would go outside and mow the lawn or rake the leaves, depending on the seasons. He would like to bring more of the outdoors in.
    Pops:
I would give my Pops a list of the 100 things that I like about him the most, even though I can probably name 1,000! He loves the feeling f being appreciated by people, especially from his granddaughter. Also because one year I wrote an essay about him, and he put it right on top of the fireplace. He says it was his favorite gift.
    Nanny:
I would make my Nanny Eggplant Parmesan. It is her favorite meal! She loves when I cook for her, even better than her favorite restaurants dinner. She says I am going to be a chef when I grow up.
