  1. >> Lily has impacted the novel the most by far. She is a 14 year old white girl with a tough dad. Her dad doesn't abuse her, but isn't a great dad either. He could care less for her. After Lily accidentally killed her mother when she was 4, her dad or T Ray has been getting worse and worse. Lily prays for her father to get better, but church only makes him worse.
    >> Lily reminds me of Francis because he had no family, and without her mother, Lily has nobody but T Ray who shouldn't be called a father, he doesn't deserve it. They both fight in life and get through the tough times on their own. They always think of themselves as ugly.

  2. Lily is a very strong, with a sensitive side. She just wants her dad to love her and her mom to come back. she feels realy sorry for what she had did to her mother, she killed her. The only thing that's like a mother to her is her nanny Rosalina. Rosalina takes care of her but she still needs her really mother to be there with her, since her father ignors her and wants nothing to do with her. i feel bad for Lily because know its like she lost two people her dad and her mom. Lily riminds me of another caracher Gorge form Mice of Men he also had killed someone that he love but on his part it was for the better and for lily it was a pure accident. the both killed someone and now they have to go thruogh the pain and suffreing of what they did. This is how Lily & Gorege are the same.

  3. I choose Lily as the main charcter to described how their live are shaped. Lilys live was shaped by the death of her mom and her thniking that she was responsible for her death. she was very shaken by that and feels very guilty about ger death because she killed her. she did not mean to but some times mistakes can be deadlym

  4. Lily seems to have a very sad life. She lost her mom, and her Dad could care less about her. Also her Dad thinks that Lily killed her mother, and that is why the Dad/ T-ray is so mean to her. Lily is also very self concious of how she looks. It is actually very sad because she has no mother to help her. I have a connection to this because one of my friends has no mom, and his dad is always grumpy and not in a good mood. I feel really bad for him.

  5. Rosaleen has been shaped by her life, because she worked in a peach orchard before living with Lily. Rosaleen was a fat black woman who faded in the darkness of the night.

  6. Lily was raised in this story in a very harsh style. Ever since she killed her mother unintentionally, her life went upside down. T. Ray might have been nice before but because his wife died, he might have gone mental and decided to raise her in a tough manner. She was raised with a lot of pain in her life and she went through many intense punishments such as the gritz.
She is relative to George from Of Mice and Men because they both have to live with the pain of killing someone. Both of these people were also very close to them whether they knew them well or not.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rosaleen is a strong woman. She isn't willing to take insults just because she has diffrent color skin. She was raised by a single mother who sold baskets on the side of the road to support herself, Rosaleen and her five other children. Being one of five kids had to have been hard on her. She had to do a lot of the cooking and the cleaning and she had to help take care of her younger siblings. Rosaleen had to learn to fend for herself and learn that just because she is African American she is still an important member of society. I think that i can relate Rosaleen the most to Lennie. He was treated diffrently because he had a mental disability and she is treated diffrently because she has diffrent a skin color. I can also relate her to the African American in Of Mice and Men. they are treated exactly the same way for the same reason.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So far in the story, Rosaleen's skin color has shaped her whole life. It controls how she is treated and how she feels about herself. It's unfortunate for her because Rosaleen is such a beautiful and strong woman on the inside. Although we must read about her being looked down upon and abused, her situation helps readers realize that you can stand up for what you believe in if you feel strong enough towards it. I wouldn't say she is "rough around the edges", but she doesn't let others treat her as if she is lower than them. She states what she believes in, and doesn't change her mind for anybody. A good example of this was when Rosaleen was being taken to jail for pouring snuff on the white mens shoes. They repeatedly beat her up, threatening that if she didn't apologize she would be killed. Even though she was highly aware of the consequences, Rosaleen refrained from apologizing to the men.
Rosaleen's situation is actually very similar to Lennie's (from Of Mice and Men). They were both treated cruelly for their natural differences. Both were discriminated against and were set limitations on what they could and could not do along with where they could and couldn't go. Round characters in both novels failed to give these discriminated characters a chance. It is a shame that many people in these novels refuse to step outside of their comfort zone to accept other people.

  9. Lily is a thirteen-year-old girl who lives with her father, T-Ray, and her friend, Rosaleen, who lives in the house to act as Lily’s mom. Lily’s mom died from a gun accident when Lily was four. T-Ray and Lily’s mother were in a fight, a gun was on the floor, Lily grabbed it and it fired at her mother. This has scarred Lily her entire life, the only memory she has of her mother. T-Ray yells at Lily everyday and shows no love for her whatsoever. He has almost hardened Lily and she has become a strong, intelligent and independent girl. Sadly, her father is no help for helping Lily to success when she is older because he thinks college is insignificant and prevents Lily from reading. Rosaleen, Lily’s black friend that T-Ray invited to live within the household to resemble a mother for Lily, cares for Lily very much. They help each other in life and act as best friends rather than mother and daughter. I don’t believe someone, like T-Ray, can possibly create a makeshift mother-daughter relationship for Lily and Rosaleen. This kind of relationship can only be brought up naturally between Lily and her actual mother, who is deceased, so this is impossible.
T-Ray reminds me of Lenny from “Of Mice and Men”. The way I picture them, both of these characters are big and burly. They both seem to have violent issues. Even if T-Rays aren’t from retardation, he always punishes Lily and is angry and harsh.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Lily Owens has been shaped by past events in her life. Her warped memories from being just a little girl lead her to believe that she was the one who killed her mother. For this, Lily mainly keeps to herself. Her father, T. Ray, is tough and mean, and Lily would not want to cross him. She converses regularly with Rosaleen, her stand-in mother, but she has no friends or anyone else to talk to. Lily lives almost a secret life, like the bees. She is sad and lonely, longing for her mother, longing for someone to love her.
I relate Lily to Francis. Francis Cassavant was shaped by past events. After Larry LaSalle raped Nicole, he was devastated enough to go to war and try to get himself blown up. His not-to-well-thought-out plan failed, and he was left without a face. Before the war, Francis was a regular teen, hanging out with his friends and his girlfriend. But after Larry, he was forever changed and would never again be the same person he was before the war.

  11. Lily is a soon-to-be fourteen year old girl that has faced many challenges in her life so far. She thinks she killed her mother when she was only four, leaving Lily to her ornery father. He is horribly cruel to her. Lily's mother like figure is Rosaleen, a tough, but loving, black women that isn't afraid to speak her mind. The fact that Lily doesn't have a real mother is evident in her appearance, though. She doesn't have any friends, doesn't have any of the new fads. and generally just isn't like most other kids her age. They have made Lily quite mature and a stronger person. This is much like how Francis in Heroes felt after the war. He didn't have anyone. He was extremely self conscious of his appearance, mostly because people shunned him because of the way he looked. So, he kept to himself, like Lily does. However, they both would love to engage in social activities and be able to act like a normal person their age.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lily is one of the protagonists that played a significant role in the development of the novel’s conflicts. Lily is just like any typical 14 year old. She is very intelligent and loves reading and writing. One tragic thing about Lily is that she lost her mom when she was only 4 years old. Lily thinks about her mom all of the time and tries to remember all the memories that happened between them. Lily’s life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. Everyday she thinks about what really happened that afternoon. In the novel Lily remembers a little bit of some of the details about her mother’s death, “This is what I know about myself. She was all I wanted. And I took her away.” Lily feels like it was her fault. It was her mistake and she killed her mother. She thinks that she shot her mom. At this point in the beginning of the story we do not know what really happened to Lily’s mom and what the cause was. Lily is a strong girl and not having a mother to be there for her when she needs her the most is a big deal for Lily. Lily can relate to Francis Cassavant from the novel Heroes that we read during the course of this year. Lily and Francis both lost something that meant a lot to them. Lily deals with the death of her mother and the memory that happened and how her mother was killed. Francis deals with loosing Nicole Renard when she escapes one night and he cannot get in touch with her. They both can relate to their past. Lily’s past involves the blurred memory of her mother’s death. Francis Cassavant deals with his identity and figuring out who he is. After he comes back from war his face is ruined and he fakes his identity as his brother Raymond. Lily and Francis both are quite similar and can relate to one another.

  13. T-Ray is a very mean and grumpy man.Ever since Deborah died he has not been the same, and he has changed tramendously. He is always in a bad mood, and is constanty mad at Lily. It is a sad thing because she doesnt have her either, and T-ray is just making things worse.I have a connection with this because i have a friend that lost his mother and his father is in a huge depression.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lily has had an excrutiating life because of T-Ray. She's forced to kneel on grits, can't say two words without being yelled at and has practically has no person to turn to in her life. Although this means a horrible childhood, it shapes her for her life ahead. She ran away feeling perfectly content and confident, stealing from convenient stores with no trouble at all. She's become independent and strong, all because of T-Ray. Lily being independent makes her like Anne Frank. They both are independent teenagers who are going through rough times. They both have a place to go when they want to escape reality, Lily in the garden and Anne in her diary.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lily Owens has already been through a lot in her short life. Lily is constantly confused about how she should feel and just how much she should reveal. She lies quite a bit, more because she can't stand the truth. Lily doesn't know how to react to her mother. She tells herself that she killed her, so her mother must hate her. She was packing, wasn't she? Lily feels lost without her mother, and she refuses to believe that she left her. No one can leave their child, right? T.Ray supplies Lily with cruel punishment, such as slapping her and making her kneel on grits. Because of this, Lily harbors strong feelings against him, even though she want to believe that he has some shred of love for her.
Lily is able to relate to Francis Cassavant, on terms of her family. Neither of them have any, or(for a good amount of time) any sense of belonging. They both have terrible feelings to the people who have done them wrong. For Francis, it's Larry LaSalle and for Lily it's her own father. Neither of them really have figured out who they are yet, or their place in the world.

  16. Writing Option # 11
Lily has been shaped by her life so much. She has had to grow up without a mother in her life, the way she has survived something as horrible as that by having Rosaleen. Rosaleen took the role of her mother when she was little, she was pulled from the fields and now she cleans and cooks for Lily and T. Ray. Lily had to learn how to take care of her lady problems on her own and she had to learn how to take care of herself at a very young age because T. Ray wasn’t planning on helping her at all. S, now she is a very mature young 14 year old who can take of herself, that’s hard to deal with.
Anne Frank was influenced by her life too. She had to grow up in the Secret Annex with no windows and no fresh air or T.V. Anne had to grow up a life of loneliness with only 8 people to converse with for years of her life. Then she was sent to a concentration camp when they all were found, she had to live like a prisoner for doing nothing and she had to suffer things nobody should, especially a child. She had to be mature and be brave no matter what she had to face, her and Lily both have hard lives.

    Option 11, Week 1

Rosaleen is the black housekeeper for Lily and T. Ray. A quote in the story tells us what she looks like, “she had a big round face and a body that sloped out from her neck like a pup tent, and she was so black that night seemed to seep from her skin.” Rosaleen lived alone in a house near Lily and T. Ray and never had any children. She has been very much shaped by her life and the circumstances in it. Rosaleen is discriminated against, especially since she is from the south and because of her race. She has learned to be tough and strong having to deal with racial slurs. Because she has no children, Lily has become a child to her. Lily sometimes day dreamed that Rosaleen was white and married to T. Ray or that she was black and that Lily herself was adopted by Rosaleen. They have a very close relationship because of her job with their family. Rosaleen kicked her husband out of the house after they were married for only 3 years. This probably made her very tough as well having to manage on her own.
I can compare Rosaleen to Anne Frank because they were both discriminated against because of their race and had many hardships in their lives. Although they were both from different areas of the world, racism exists everywhere and people must be strong to deal with it. Both characters are headstrong and have the guts to stand up for themselves and cheer up people.

  18. The character in “The Secret Life of Bees” that has been shaped by their lives is T. Ray. His wife was killed and he was left with a daughter. T. Ray seems like he hardly loves Lily and that Lily is not a part of his life. He was shaped to be mean when his wife died. Although in the story he make it sounded like Lily’s mother was in the just in the closet. When really it seems like she was running away from T. Ray. T. Ray is now a mean grouchy man who doesn’t have love in his life. In the story “Heroes” Francis was shaped by his past. He has a broken heart from when Nicole left. He was shaped by this because now he isn’t happy and wants to get even with Larry LaSalle. These two character were shaped from the past.

    ReplyDelete
  19. In the book, The Secret Life of Bees,Lily has been shaped by her troubled life. At a young age, Lily had lost her mother to a terrible accident. Lily believes that she is the reason for her mothers death. Lily was left with her abusive father T-Ray and her friend Rosaleen. She longs for a mother, someone that would care for her and help her get through life situations. Lily is similar to Francis, a charecter from the book Heroes. Francis lost his friend Nicole to a conflict involving Larry la Salle. Larry abused his friend,Nicole, and Francis felt responsible for what had happened. He then entered the war in an attemt to get himself killed. Francis had lost Nicole, someone vary important to him, like Lily lost her mother.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The charecter I pick is Tray because he has so much to do with the fact that Lily is so sad. For example one day before Lilys birthday she asks for a charm braclet. This is like a joke to him and he doesnt even think about getting it for her. another example of how he contributes to the conflicts in the story is how he tells her that Lilys mom was leaving her the day she died. Now Lily has to live with the fact that it was her that was making her mom leave. Tray kind of reminds me of curly from of mice and men, becasue of the way they treat woman. Curly never wanted his wife to come out of the house or go close to the farm workers. Tray doesnt even talk to his daughter only when he wants to put her down about her mother.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lilly Owens is one of the main characters in the book and has a very hard life, and unfortunately lived with out a mother. Ever since she by accident killed her mother, when she was four her life has been hard and unlike many other children’s. T-Ray dose not really care about her and is very mean and nasty all of the time. She doesn’t have any friends either. Lilly has no one like a mother in her life or even a parent. T-Ray just punishes her and could care less what she does with her life, he is always putting Lilly down, by calling her mean things. T-Ray is like that big bully in school that everybody is afraid of and one day he picks on you, but you never did anything to him. Lilly is missing that parent figure in her life and being a fourteen year old girl that can be very tough to deal with. The closest thing she has to parent is Rosaleen her black housekeeper, T-Ray hired to cook and clean after Deborah, Lilly mom died. Her tough and lonely child hood has shaped her to be a strong and intelligent young lady. There are also some downfalls because she is constantly feeling guilty for killing her mother. The accident that occurred when she was four shaped her personality because she always feels sad that she took away her mothers life and now she is in pain without her. Her whole life took a turn for the worse when her mother died. I think that it made her a stronger person because she has had though times but she worked through them. “She is all I ever wanted and I took her away.” Lilly says. Lilly is very sad that she killed her mother and now that’s all she wants is to have a mother. She missed her mother so much and wishes that she was still around.
Francis life was also hard and tough. Francis Casvant wanted to kill himself because he thought that he was worthless and had no importance in his life. He had these felling because he was lonely during his child hood and lacked a blood related parent. He had a hard life too, because like Lilly his mother died when he was young and his father was not the most loving. A few years after his father died as well and he had to live with his Uncle who was really not that concerned with Francis at all. Francis was lonely and had no family. This shaped Francis personality because from a young age he felt alone almost like he was always in darkness. His life was tough and then he meet a girl named Nicole and fell in love. Everything was better for him and he met Larry LaSalle who showed him he was important to the world and his talent was Table Tennis. Then Larry raped Nicole and she left Francis because he never bothered to help her. Francis being as lonely and weak as he was from having no family, after Nicole left decided that his life was worthless and wanted kill himself. He already had a low respect for himself and after Nicole it just became even lower.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lily, one of the major characters in The Secret Life of Bees plays a significant role in the development of the novel's conflicts. Lily is shy and very confused about her past. The death of her mother, and her abusive father, has shaped her into a very interesting character. Queen bees symbolizes for mother in the novel, which will continue to prod the conflict of Lily not having a mother and how she learns to substitute other women as mother-figures and thus, overcomes her sense of “queenlessness.” Also, her father shaped Lily into not knowing true happiness from parents. Her father wasn't a very good parent, always punishing Lily with cruel and harsh punishments, such as “Martha Whites”. Lily has missed a lot about things you are suppose to learn about during your childhood due to the irresponsibility of her father.
I made a text-to-text connection with Lily and George Milton from Of Mice and Men. They both are very lonely and found someone to accompany them on their travels. Lily was able to befriend Rosaleen to the point where Lily considered Rosaleen as a mother. George's only and best friend was Lennis Small. They both are “loners” but were able to turn towards something to do something about the loneliness they feel. Also, they faced many conflicts in their life, but were able to solve them.

    ReplyDelete
  23. One of the most round character in this book in my eyes is Lily. Throughout her whole life shes been changed ever since her mother died. After her mother dies she realized what a jerk living with T-Ray and only T-Ray. Shes had to go to school with no parental guidance and deal with everyday life without a parent. She finally realized what she was supposed to do. Go and run away from T-Ray. This is when she finally became an independent women.
This is just like Anne because when she had no other choice but to live in a small room with random strangers and family, she was almost all on her own.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rosaleen is a very out spoken woman, who had to help raise her 5 siblings and herself. That shaped her because now she is very strong.

Francias is like Lily because they are both lonely, and trying to find secrets. And they both have people that they hate. Also they get hurt in parts of the story physically.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lily Owens has been shaped by her life. She relates to Francis Cassavant from Heroes.
Lily is an only child who is raised by her cruel father, T. Ray. T. Ray yells at Lily all the time and he doesn't treat

her well. T. Ray is no father to Lily. Lily misses her mother terribly. When Lily was four, she accidently shot and killed

her mother. Lily said about her mother, "She was all I wanted. And I took her away." This shows that Lily feels very guilty

and dejected. Lily has a "stand-in" mother, Rosaleen. Rosaleen is the only living person she loves right now. Lily doesn't

fit in at school. She is lonely and doesn't have friends. Since her father doesn't buy her clothes, Lily has to wear the

clothes that she made in home economics class in school. And they don't fit well or look good. Lily can be described as a

lonely girl who misses her deceased mother but at least has one person to love.
Lily's feelings are similar to Francis Cassavant's feeling in the book Heroes. Francis fell on a grenade on purpose to end his life. He feels guilty about everybody calling him a hero when what he did was done purely out of selfishness. He goes around with everybody saying great things about him when he feels so bad. Lily goes around wih everybody saying that it wasn't her fault that she killed her mother but she feels that it was all her fault. Lily and Francis bother feel extremely guilty about their actions.
Lily has been shaped by her life and how things turned out. She can be compared to Francis Cassavant from the book Heroes because they both feel guilty about what they have done.

    ReplyDelete
  26. After Lily's mother died T-Ray was a little abusive by making her kneel on grits and yelling at her. Before Lily's mother died Lily was probably a happy spirited girl, and then she became very mad and always sad. Lily relates to another character from another book we read earlier in the year. The book was; Heroes. Heroes can be related to Lily because when Nicole left Francis he felt lonely just like how Lily felt when her mom left her

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lily is a very independent girl. She had to grow up without her mother, and with a very strict father. She never had the the love and support of a mother and you can tell by her appearance that she doesn't have one. Because of this, she has learned how to support herself, but she still wants to be like the other girls and fit in.
Francis from Heros had to grow up without his parents too. He had no one. So he joined the army.

    ReplyDelete
  28. T. Ray has been shaped by his own life because his wife had suppose-ably left him, and had came back to clean out her things. Although, she was accidentally shot by Lily who was only an infant at the time. Since then he had been an unusually cruel person to both his daughter, and other people that know him. He only really cares about his peaches and his dog. He would think of extremely cruel punishments for Lily even when she didn't deserve them. Even when Lily left, he probably went looking for her for a day or two and gave up, because that is the type of person he is and that is his life. He isn't a good father, and has never been much of a role model to Lily. Losing his wife, or who knows what happened before that, has caused him to be the hatred and cruel person that he is.

    ReplyDelete
  29. T-Ray's character has been shaped by all the bad events in his life. One event that would make sense is when Lily was born. I bet before she was born, T-Ray was happy and was having the time of his life with Deborah. Once she was born, his life went into a tailspin. The his wife died and he took all his anger out on the world and Lily.

T-Ray is most similar to George from O.M.M because George was mad at the world for having to take care of Lenny. Without Lenny, his life would have been fine.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lily Owens is a very interesting character in The Secret Life of Bees. She is a kind of lonesome girl. She doesn't have a lot of friends, one of the few being Rosaleen. Lily loves being with Rosaleen, and she is very protective of her. Lily cares so much about Rosaleen that she helped her escape from jail! Another thing about Lily, is that she is afraid of T. Ray. I think she is lonely partly because of him. She's always hated the grits, and that got her scared of him forever.
Lily reminds me of another character from a previous class book. She reminds me of Anne Frank. Both characters are kind of lonely, but they speak up when they need to. For example, Lily spoke up for herself to T. Ray, which was very brave and defiant. Anne Frank is the same. The two characters also have parental problems, but not the same type. This is how they are alike.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Lily Owens has developed into a naive young girl with a hard shell on the outside, but the lack of being loved has made her relatively soft on the inside. She lived with her father (though she calls him T-Ray as he's a lacking father figure) who's a bitter angry man and gives her nothing but strict rules, strict punishment, and a restricted lifestyle. Her mother, the only thing that Lily could ever want, more than anything else in the world, was killed when Lily was four. Not only does Lily have to live with the pain of having her mother "withheld" from her life, but Lily was the one who took her away. That guilt to Lily is, at times, sickening. She endures a life she'd quickly take any route out of, and does so by running away from home.

Lily reminds me of Francis Cassavant from Heroes. He lacked guidance and sought a role model for most of his young life. He found that in Larry LaSalle. After Larry's homecoming, he ruined Francis' life, taking away what gave Francis something to live for and Francis found himself without purpose. What happened to Francis next is what sets him apart from Lily. Instead of adapting and learning to live with his misery, he became suicidal.

    ReplyDelete
  32. “Not funny? Not funny? Why, it’s the funniest goddamn thing I ever heard: you thinking your mother is your guardian angel. The women could have cared less about you.” T. Ray, the single father to Lily Owens, is a bitter man. His wife was accidently killed by a gun that was shot by his own daughter. He was left alone to try to raise Lily. T. Ray doesn’t seem like he cared at all about Lily. All he does is yell at her and give her cruel punishments. He doesn’t let Lily do anything fun, and he things that anything that she does is a waste of time. He thinks her reading is a waste of time. He thinks her writing is a waste of time. He thinks college is a waste of time. In general, T. Ray only thinks about himself. T. Ray might have been raised being a mean person. Then again, his meanness may have come from the tragic loss of his wife. I think that something bad must have happened to T. Ray before this incident because he was nasty and violent. T. Ray drove Lily to the point of running away.
In The Diary of Anne Frank, Mr.VanDaan reminds me of T. Ray. Mr.VanDaan was more concerned with his own well being than anybody else in the house. He snuck into the kitchen at one point and stole food. He was stealing food out of his own kids mouths. Peter and Lily were both embarrassed of their parents. Although Mr.VanDaan didn’t physically punish anybody like T. Ray and Lily, he still yelled at Peter and Anne and other people if things didn’t go exactly the way that he wanted them to go.

  33. Tray is a very mean and brutal person. he hates lily and hes always angry. he is alot like lenny because he seems very big and muscular

    ReplyDelete
  34. Lilly is the daughter of T.ray and is also the main character, When Lilly was four she accidentally shot and killed her mother Since that incident Lilly was never the same. She is being raised by a father who is on the brink of being an abuser. She has nobody that actually loves her and her only family member which is her father could care less about her. Since Lilly has no mother she never had anybody to help her dress as a child and as a result her sense of style is truly horrendous. Her father even though he doesn't abuse her treats her badly he never takes her out and doesn't even let her go to school functions. Lilly life is very depressing she truly has no one to fall back on.
Lilly can relate to Francis Cassavant from Heroes. Neither of them had a mother but both of them had some sort of father figure. Even though they had some type of father the both lest the only family thhey had to get way from their past mistakes. So that they could begin a new one.
