  1. Unfinished-Lily yearns to blend in with the other girls at her school, to have a mother to fix her hair, and buy her cashmere twinsets with little kilts. But what Lily does have is a father verging on abusiveness, homemade blouses and skirts, and a nanny who could care less about poise and grace because what use is poise and grace in the face of real intelligence? One of Lily's wishes is to get a silver charm bracelet for her birthday. Everyone else has one but her, except, like always her father says no. Just like when she wanted to Try out for the cheerleading team, and when she asks to be driven into town, or for clothes that haven't been made in a home ec. classroom.
If Lily had gotten the charm bracelet she wished for I bet she would get a bee charm. "Everyone of those bees could have descended on me like a flock of angels and stung me till I died..." Lily has a fondness for the bees. She enjoys watching them as they swarm around her room forming a funnel around her. She would have liked to have a bee charm for her bracelet. Another charm would be an old fashioned fountain pen.

  2. For Lily's birthday, she wants only a charm bracelet. Everyone at school has one, and has no problem displaying their sparkly silver charms. For one of Lily's charms, I would put a locket with nothing in it, to symbloize an empty heart. I would add a bee and a book, because she is facisnated by bees and likes to read. Also, I would put a pencil, because she wants to be an author.
On my charm bracelet, I would have a sun, because I think that really symbloizes who I am. I would put a mouth, because I am talkative and I love to smile! I would put a music note, because I am one of those people who would literally die without music. Finally, I would put a star, because it is what I strive to be and I love being outside and looking at the stars like Lily loves looking at the bees.

  3. Lily always wanted a charm bracelet for her birthday because so many of the other girls in her school had it. If she did get the chance to ever get one, I think she would choose a bee as one of them because when she was in her room and a swarm of bees were in it, she didn't panic she stood in awe of it's awesomeness. She would also probably want a book because she wanted to get into that boarding school. "They teach everything. How to walk and pivot, what to do with your ankles when you sit in a chair, how to get into a car, pour tea, take off your gloves..." shows how interested she is in the school. She might also get a peach because that is her job in the summer and it's what her dad sells. She would also want a science coat because her dream was to be a professer and write books.
If i were to get a charm bracelet, it would be a soccer ball because I love and play the sport, drums because it's the instrument I play, violin because that's the second instrument i play, and my last charm would be a moon because the moon is somthing awesome and i like looking at it.

  4. Lily always wanted to fit in with the other girls at school. This has proved difficult for her, however, since she is without a mother, owns no nice clothes, and has a father who has rarely directed an act of kindness towards her. One of Lily's wishes is to own a charm bracelet, which many girls in her school have. If she were to get a charm bracelet, Lily would most likely put a bee charm, a book charm, a pencil charm, and a tree charm.
"At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around the room, making that propeller sound, a high-pitched zzzzz that hummed along my skin. I watched their wings shining like bits of chrome in the dark and felt the longing build in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind, split my heart down its seam." The first paragraph of The Secret Life of Bees shows Lily's fascination with bees. She would also have a book as one of her charms because Lily loves to read, even though her father is against it. She enjoys Shakespeare, as well. The quote "I was the only student who didn't groan and carry on when Mrs. Henry assigned us another Shakespeare play" shows Lily's thoughts on reading and Shakespeare. Along with reading, Lily likes writing, and is very studious with a high intelligence. Lily's teacher, Mrs. Henry, told her that she could be a professor and write actual books to her credit. This statement motivated Lily to write stories and even start a philosophy. The last charm that I think Lily would choose for her bracelet is a tree charm. At this point in the story, trees seem to be sort of like a getaway for her. Lily sneaks out to read in a tree where T. Ray can't find her. She also hid her mother's things next to a tree, where she often goes to just relax and look at the things her mother left behind. If I had a charm bracelet, the four charms I would choose would be a paint brush, because I love to draw, a cat, because I have a cat and cats are my favorite animals, a cupcake, since cupcakes are among the list of my favorite foods, and a flower, because I love spring and the smell of flowers.

  5. I think Lily would want charms on her charm bracelet that remind her of her mother. One charm i think she would get is a brush. Lily always wanted a mother to brush her hair and make it nice instead of a father who does nothing with it. Another charm i think she would get is a bee. She seems very interested in the bees that she keeps in a jar. Another charm she might get is Mary, or a cross to remind her of Mary. The card she has that has the black Mary on it is one of the only things she has left of her mother. "She was all I wanted. And I took her away." That is a quote that made me think she would get charms in memory of her mother. The last charm I think she may get is a peach. A peach would remind her of her father and his peach farm. She also sells the peaches so when she gets older it would remind her of her childhood. The four charms I would put on my charm bracelet would be a lacrosse stick, shamrock, a music symbol, and a dog. All of those charms are things that I love.

  6. For her birthday, Lily wanted a charm bracelet that all the girls in school have. Being that it is a charm bracelet, there needs to be charms. If Lily had to pick four charms I think she would pick a book, a peach, a Black Mary, and the letter D. I think she would pick a book because she loves to read, even if people discourage her from it. She would pick a peach because T. Ray owns a peach orchard, she works at the peach stand, she loves peaches, and she grew up there, so it holds a special place in her heart. But most of all because she hides the last things she has in remembrance of her mother in the orchard. She would pick a Black Mary because it was her mother’s, she always has it with her. Also on the back of it it says Tiburon, South Carolina which Lily thinks to be a clue to escaping. And last, but not least, Lily would pick the letter D because that was her mother’s name and she loved that name. Also it is very special to her because her mother died when she was young, and she never had anybody close to her like a mother would be.
If I got the same charm bracelet as Lily, and had to pick four charms to put on it, those four charms would be a soccer ball, a softball, a basketball, and a beach ball. I would pick a soccer ball because I love soccer, it’s in my blood being a Brasilian, and I also play on the towns travel team. I would pick a softball because it is my favorite sport, I pitch so it’s year round, and I also play on my towns travel team. I would pick a basketball because I love basketball, and I also love to watch the pros. And I would also pick a beach ball because first of all, I love the beach and the summer time and the sand in between your toes and everything about it including the hot weather. Also it reminds me of a rainbow and I love standing out and being bright. And last, but not least, softball is in the summer time and beach balls remind me of summer.

  7. Lily Owens birthday is coming up that following Saturday in the novel. Lily talks to Tray about wanting a charm bracelet. Lily says on page 21, “I was just thinking I would love to have one of those silver charm bracelets they have down at the mercantile.” Lily talks about last year in school she had been the only girl at Sylvan Junior High without one. If I had to speculate what four charms Lily would want on her bracelet I would choose a bee, heart, jar, and a book. I would pick a bee because I feel Lily has some type of connection to a bee and can relate to it, she talks about catching the bees in a jar and how they fly everywhere and the sounds they make. Lily reminds me somewhat of a bee because of her bubbly personality and her mind is full of adventure. Her mind is like the bees as they fly around collecting nectar. She enjoys watching them in her room buzzing around her. I would pick a heart to put on her charm because Lily is full of love and cares for the people that love her. She takes care of the people that love her and treat her right and forget the others. Lily loves many people in her life. At this point in the story, she loves Rosaleen dearly and her mother. I would pick a jar because in the story she hears a voice say, “Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open.” There is that voice in her head and she trusts it. In my opinion, this jar represents the bees and that her life is stuck in this jar and she needs to get out of it and be set free. I would pick a book because Lily loves reading and writing. Lily seems like a loner and she goes to reading and writing. It helps express her feelings and she is a very intelligent smart young girl. Those are the 4 charms that I would pick to be on her charm bracelet. The four charms that I would choose for my own would be a dolphin, cupcakes, heart, and a smiley face. I love dolphins they are my favorite animals and I love swimming. Cupcakes are delicious. I love the person that invented this mouth watering treat. I chose a heart because I am a loving and friendly girl. I love making people smile. Last I chose a smiley face because I believe the best thing in life is happiness. And making people smile and feel good. Those are the charms that I would pick on my charm bracelet.

  8. Although a bit obvious Lily would most likely have a bee charm on her bracelet. "Right now it's enough to say that despite everything that happened that summer, I still remain tender towards the bees." She loves the bees and would like to symbolize them. Another charm would be a cross. The virgin Mary picture she has would be represented through a cristian cross, for Mary. Another charm would be simple, just the words "mom." She doesnt really have anything to remember her mom by, just the memory of her mom herself. The final charm would be a bird. For her longing to be free and fly away from the nest. To escape T-Ray and fly away on her own. Personally, my four charms would be a music note, a dinosaur, a tree and a clover. The music note is for the school band and just a love for music in general. The dinosaur is [mostly because I love dinosaurs] but also because their strong and feirce. A tree, to represent family and the growth of it. And finally, a clover for my grandpa and my irish heritedge. (?) spelling...?

  9. It's not that Lily actually believes that a charm bracelet would helpher, she being fourteen, but that she needs any bit of hope, even if it is superficial, to cling on to. She wants, obviously, to be popular at school and to be the same as everyone else, so Lily would put a "charm" charm on her charm bracelet, so everyone who met her would be charmed by her. But being popualr is not hte only thing Lily wants. Lily believes, that to be popular, you need to be beautiful. And she desperately wants the "chin" and the "clothes" that beautiful people wear. Thus, she'd put a beauty charm on her bracelet. Lily also wants her mother back, and badly; her mother loved her (she believed anyway) and brought peace to her family. So maybe Lily would like a peace or family charm for her bracelet. Lastly, since it's her birthday (obviously), perhaps a no-work charm would be nice? After all, nobody likes having to head the family peach stand out in the hot, sweltering summer, standing next to a road, when nobody's going to buy your peaches anyway (and as a result, you're going to sit on grits). Thus, Lily would put a no-work charm on her bracelet.

A no-work charm would help me too. right now I'm being drowned under loads of Language Arts homeowrk, science labs, and math tests and whatnot. The worst part is, I have a camping trip this weekend, so I can't even do my homework during the weekend. Maybe a time-saving charm would be nice too. And with that, a nice watch to go with my charm. And to prevent any ahrm on my camping trip, perhaps a bee-repelling charm would be nice too.

  10. Lily was turning 14, and really wanted a silver charm bracelet. Everyone she knew had one, except for her. I Lily had gotten the charm bracelet, she would have definitely wanted some meaningful charms. I think that one charm she would really want, is a tree. Lily had a tin box full of her mother's belongings. She would burry the tin box in the orchard, to keep it away from T.Ray. "Now and then, I'd go out there and dig up the box. I would lie on the ground with the trees folded over me, wearing her gloves, smiling at her photograph."
Another charm I think Lily would want on her charm bracelet was a bee. Lily loves bees. She loved watching them swirl around her room. She also loved to capture bees in the morning. Lily would also love to have a charm of a peach. Lily worked at the peach stand, selling peaches for T.Ray. Every time she was there, she was full of boredom, but i mean it is something she does, that will have a childhood meaning later on. One last charm, I think Lily would want is a book charm. Lily loves to read. When she is at the peach stand, bored to death, T.Ray refuses to bring her a book. She said, "What kind of person is against reading?"
If I were to have a charm bracelet, 4 charms I would want are, a leotard, a zebra, a ring, and a motor cycle. I would want a leotard as a charm because I am a gymnastics maniac. I do gymnastics everyday for 4 1/2 hours. I just can't get enough of it. I also would want a zebra, because that is my favorite animal. I love the zebra pattern also. My whole room is also zebra, which means that obviously, I am obsessed with it. I would want a charm of a ring, because I wear rings everyday. I love the big and stretchy rings the most. I think they make you look so fashionable. One last charm I would want is a motor cycle. I have mini motor cycles at my house that my sisters and I go on. My best friend and I alway ride them. We call them our "mojos." All of these charms will make me look back and remember my favorite childhood memories, once I get older.

  11. I think one of the charms should be a magnifying glass because of how curious she is. Another should be a bee because she is so interested in them. As well as a book because she loves to read and write. Like when she says how she wants to "write her own novel when i grow up". For her last charm she should get a MOM sign because she misses and wants to know about her mother. On my charm bracelet i would of course put the Xbox symbol. Then i would put on a a mac symbol for my ipod and computer. Thirdly I'd put a camera because i love to make youtube videos. Finally there would be the boy scout symbol because i love boy scouts.

Lily has a fondness for the bees. She enjoys watching them as they swarm around her room forming a funnel around her. She would have liked to have a bee charm for her bracelet. Another charm would be an old fashioned fountain pen. Lily has expressed an interest in writing "I planned to be a professor and writer of actual books". She often writs poetry while manning the peach stand. Another charm would be a book, her father calls "Miss Brown-Nose-in-a-Book". She also borrows books from her teacher over the summer. Lastly she would have a mirror. Just like any other teen she worries obsessively over her looks, she even chewed up her fingers over it.

  13. A charm bracelet would be something solid for Lily to hold on to, no matter the problem. The charms would have to be able to comfort her, remind her of her life and how she survived. The most likely one would be a bee. It would remind her of the days lying in bed with the bees flying around her, huddled in her own personal world. Lily would be reminded of the long days spent with August, and all the love she sent to the bees.
Next would be a jar of honey. To remind her of its sweetness and how it was part of every day. "We lived for honey. We swallowed a spoonful in the morning to wake us up and one at night, to put us to sleep." Honey was always with her when she was with the sisters.
A funky hat would be next. To remind her of Lunelle and all of Mary's Daughters and the praying they did. So that she could look at it and remember the wonderful times and that she had all of these women as her family.
Last would be a heart. Just like the one painted on the statue of Mary. Now, Lily would constantly have a part of her near her. So when she can't find the strength in herself, she would have a little piece to remind her that Mary was always watching over. That Mary was just another kind of mother.
If I had a charm bracelet, I would pick four things that were simple, but a big part of my life. My first would probably be a leaf to signify my love and appreciation of nature. How powerful and influencial it is to everything around it. I would also have a clock, to show how sometimes time seems so endless. Next, would be a candle. Simply because I love candles, especially scented ones. They always make my room smell so nice. Last would be a pillow, because comfort is number one. Warm textures and smells are a necessity to happiness.

  14. Lily just wants to be like the other girls in school. More than often, she is the center of gossip and conversation at school because of her homemade clothes and 'lack of beauty'. She has a nanny, but she is useless on the topic of fashion, or trendiness. Her father could care less about how she looks and what she walks out of the house in, and she is left with utter hopelessness. She thinks to herself a lot I might as well wear a sign on my back: I am not popular, and never will be. However, her birthday is coming up, and she works up the nerve to ask T. Ray for a pretty silver charm bracelet. She knows her response ahead of time, but it was worth a try. Hey, it doesn't cost anything to dream, so when you do, dream big.
Lily would have loved to have a silver bee charm, because she stays awake at night, watching their true nature. “At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around my room, making that propeller sound, a high-pitched zzzzzz that hummed along my skin.” They also gave her inspiration to leave her abusive surroundings, "Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open."
Another charm she would want is a book, because she likes to read poems, and other nteresting books, and she is very good at writing. She originally wanted to go to beauty school, but her teacher told her she could do much better than that, if she wrote instead. The only chance she would have of making something of herself is by getting a scholarship and going to college.
She would have loved a heart for a charm, to remind her how much her mother loved her and still does, since she left her box of her mother's things in the orchard, back at 'home'. One last charm she would have enjoyed would be a bow, because it will remind her that she is pretty and not the 'ugly' girl she thinks she is, and also it symbolizes that her life will be secure and together, and that everything will be OK in the end.
If I had a silver charm bracelet, I would have the drama masks as a charm, because I love acting. I would also have a microphone, because I like to sing, and it is one of my hobbies. Also, I would love a rose, because it symbolizes love, virtue, and beauty. It is also my favorite flower. Lastly I would have a four leaf clover just for luck!

  15. For her birthday, Lily Owens wanted a charm bracelet that every other girl in school had. But, T. Ray wouldn't buy her one. If Lily had gotten the charm bracelet, she might've put the following things on it:
The first two things Lily would get would most likely be a pen and a book. She would get a pen and a book because she said that she likes to write. She said, "...suddenly, I was going around volunteering to people, people who didn't even want to know, that I planned to be a professor and a writer of actual books." Also, Lily likes to read at the peach stand so that would be another reason why she would want a book on her charm bracelet. The third charm would be a heart symbolizing her love for her mother. The heart would probably be made of stone or something hard and unbreakable. Just like her love would be unbreakable. The fourth charm that Lily would get might be a bee. This would show her affection for bees and it would also remind her of how her mother was so gentle with insects.
If I had a charm bracelet, the first thing I would get would be a music note. I love music and it's been there ever since I was young and my father had introduced me to it. The second charm I would get would be a pen because I, like Lily, love to write. Creative writing really gets me going and I just really like it. The third thing would be a book because, again like Lily, I love to read. I get a lot of my inspiration for writing from there. Reading also teaches me things that I would never have known without reading it. The fourth charm would be a charm that says "believe". This would mean the most to me because I often lose hope in myself and I rarely believe. If I believe in myself, I know I can do and be so much more than what I am now.
Lily Owens wants a charm bracelet for her birthday and four of the charms that she might put on her bracelet would be: a pen, a book, a heart and a bee.

  16. If Lilly got the charm bracelet she wanted I think she would have put on a bee charm, a mom charm, a smile charm, and a sun charm. I think she would get the bee charm because the bees relax her and she loves them. This is why i think the bees never sting her because they feel her loving vibe. I think she would want the mom charm to represent her dead mom. This would be sign of love and respect for her mother, also she would always have a little piece of her mother rapped around her wrist. The sun and smile would identify her outlook on life and how happy she is. She is confident and happy which is why the sun and smile would fit her well. If i got a charm bracelet i would put on charms of my family because they are the most important thing to me in my life and without them i would be miserable. Also if i ever was sad i could look at my bracelet and realize my family would always be there for me.

  17. If T.Ray found his heart and decided to be nice for once and gotten the Lily the charm bracelet it would be great. If she would get four charms on it would be a bee because she keeps them in the jar and are a big part of the book. The second charm would be a heart for her and her mother and the love they shared. The third charm would be a black mary because of the picture that she found and the picture on the honey glass. The fourth charm would be snuff because she gets it for Rosaleen and that would remind her of how she got arrested and beaten. If i was a girl and I got a charm bracelet i would probaly get a monkey, elephant, gazelle, and an ox because those are animals i like.

  18. She couldnt really ask for anything else. She has her mother dead. All she wants is either to know a little something about her mom or get a charm bracelet so she doesent look like a complete fool in her school. Everyone can tell that she really wants some info on her mom but she is just using the charm bracelet as an excuse. She is basically trying to fit in. Since basically no one likes her.

  19. For Lilly`s Birthday she was hoping to recieve a charm braclet. This way she could be proudly show it off like the other kids at school. Unfortunatly, T-Ray refuses to give Lilly a birthday present. But if Lilly was to wear a silver charm braclet, it would probably include a bee, a book, a heart and an angel charm. In the book, Lilly describes her deceased mother, whom she wishes to learn all about. She would most likley get a heart shaped charm because Lilly longs for her mothers love. She often thinks about her mother and spends most of he rtime trying to figure out more about her life. If I were to get a silver charm braclet I would probably get a heart, a dog, a diamond and a paint brush. I would like a paint brush charm because I am very passionate about art. I also spend alot of my time drawing and painting.

  20. Lily has always wanted a charm bracelet for her birthday because all of the other girls at school had one. If Lily were to get four charms on her bracelet she would get a bee, a small glove, a pen, and a house charm. She would get a bee charm because she loves to watch the bees fly around her room and catch them so she can hear them buzz. She would get a little glove charm
to remember her mother. Her mother used to wear little white gloves before she died. She would get a pen she likes to right and wants to go to college and become a writer. She would also get a little house charm because she wants to find a home where she feels comfortable.

If I had a charm bracelet I would put a music note, a softball, a shoe, and a peace sign because I love all of these things.

  22. “I was just thinking I would love to have one of those silver charm bracelets they have down at the merchantile.” For Lily’s 14 birthday, she asks T. Ray for a charm bracelet. He gave her a stern look, but otherwise completely ignored her request. The first charm on Lily’s bracelet would be a bee. “At night I would lie in bed and watch the show, how bees squeezed through the cracks of my bedroom wall and flew circles around the room, making that propeller sound, a high-pitched zzzzzz that hummed along my skin. “ Lily was infatuated by bees. The next charm on her bracelet would be a Shakespeare book. Lily was the only student who didn’t groan and carry on when Mrs. Henry assigned the class another Shakespeare play. Lily was thrilled. The 3rd charm on Lily’s bracelet would be a fountain pen. Lily loves to write. She kept a collection of her writings. Lily planned to be a professor, and “a writer of actual books.” The final charm on her bracelet would be a miniature version of the colored Mary. When Lily found the picture of the black Mary with the words “Tiburon, S.C” written on the back, she decided that she wanted to go there to find connections to her mother. This Mary has guided Lily and Rosaleen to the Boatwright sisters.
I have my own charm bracelet, and I am very selective on what I put on it. I want every charm on my bracelet to represent who I am. When I got this bracelet for my 13th birthday, my mom said that I could pick out one charm to put on it. The very first charm on my bracelet was a smiley face. Anybody that knows me knows that I’m always smiling and laughing. There is hardly ever a moment that you will catch me without a smile plastered onto my face. The next charm was given to me by my best friend. It was two people holding hands, to symbolize friendship. Friendship is so important to me. I would do absolutely anything for my friends; they mean the world to me. The third charm on my bracelet I picked out myself. It is a windmill. I was born in Holland, and that is where all my family lives. Every spring I go to Holland and visit my family. It is such a beautiful country. Windmills, wooden shoes and tulips are 3 symbols of Holland. The fourth charm that I put on my bracelet was a music note. I play the clarinet. I also love listening to music. I have my headphones on until the bell rings saying that homeroom has began, and I pull my i-pod back out as soon as school gets out. In the past year I have gotten an additional 3 charms on my bracelet, and they all symbolize something important in my life.

  23. In the summer of 1964 Lilly turned 14 all she truly longed for was a charm bracelet she explained to T.ray how every girl at Sylvan Junior high had one, except her. If Lilly were to get a charm bracelet the four charms she would have would be a bee, a book. the initials bm(stands for black Mary), and her mothers name. The feelings Lilly has towards losing her mother are very deep they are so deep that she longs for her forgiveness as stated by her, "Mother, forgive. Please forgive." If she were to have a charm bracelet with her mothers name i think it would always remind her that her mother will always be near her and that she always loved her.
If I were to get a charm bracelet i would probably get a snowboard charm, a soccer charm, a pencil charm, and a piano charm. I would get a snowboard charm because I love doing it and it is something i can do with friends and family. I would have a soccer charm because it was the first sport I ever learned to play and throughout the years i have gotten much better at it and i am a pretty skillful player now. I would have a pencil because drawing is something i use to express myself and is something i am good at. Finally i would have a piano charm because i love the sound of the piano and i love being able to play piano.
