On page 105, May made  an "L" pancake for Lily. June throws it in the trash.

Response Requirement:

  • Besides "Lily," pick an "L" word that applies to Lily. Explain (and use a quote) to show the word's importance.
  • Pick one more character and come up with a word that describes them using the first letter of their name.  Explain the word's importance.

  1. Lily could be explained as lost. She is lost because she has no mother, and she ran away from her dad. She does not know what to do with her life. Right now she is staying with August, MAy and June, and she is still not sure if it a good idea. Lily is in a point in her life where she just has no idea at where it is going.
To me May is like a misfit, because she is special, and acts much different then the others. For example she is always happy and is smiling almost 24/7. She is just so amazing in her own certain way and it is great that she is the way she is.

  2. Lily doesn’t like pancakes, but when May makes her one in the shape of an L, she doesn’t refuse. However, her L pancake is burned to a crisp and has to be thrown away. I think it is only fitting that her L had to be thrown away, because that is how she feels about herself and her life. Another word using L is lonely. Lily lives a secret life, like the bees, and she is very dependent and keeps to herself. “‘A while longer,’ I answered, looking over into the garbage can. L for Lily.” This was Lily’s response to the question of how long her and Rosaleen were staying, and I think Lily seeing her own “self” in the garbage made her think that she really wants to stay for a while longer. A M pancake for May could stand for misunderstood. May has trouble differentiating her pain from other people’s pain. Nobody seems to understand her sadness. It seems like an annoyance when someone has to walk her out to the wall or calm her down.

Lily is the protagonist in the story that is going through some difficult times. The loss of her mother has always been in the back of her head. It’s like a puzzle and she’s trying to find the pieces to glue her life together. The word I would pick would be LONLEY. Lily is very lonely before she meets August, June, and May. With only really Rosaleen to talk to and hang out with she tends to get lonely on the inside. Living with Tray doesn’t do her any good, she isn’t treated right and there is no one to protect her besides Rosaleen. “She was all I wanted. And I took her away.” Looking to the front of the novel, (page 8) these words that came out of Lily’s mouth explained it all. Her mom was all she ever wanted and it’s devastating to know that the most important woman to her was not there. In my opinion, as we get farther into the novel I feel this loneliness in Lily will be gone and she will feel like she belongs somewhere and people will love her for who she is.

Tray is another character in this novel. I would describe him as treacherous. He is dishonest and disloyal to Lily. Tray has never treated Lily with loyalty. He treats her as if she is a dirty penny on the ground. He stomps all over her and that hurts Lily to know that her own father treats her that way. Lily knows that he has lied to her in the past. After Tray tells Lily that her mother just came back for her things the day the accident happened. “And if he thinks I am going to believe that story, he has a hole in his so called brain. He only made it up to punish me, I know he did.” (Page 52) This shows that Lily doesn’t trust him and knows that he lies to her about other things as well.

  4. An "L" word to describe Lily, well there are the obvious ones like loveable or likeable. But what about loyal? In my opinon loyal is the perfect word to describe Lily. When she was going to run away, she didnt just think of herself she also thought about Rosealeen and how she was going to be stuck in jail if she didn't rescue her. Although, there was one time that Lily could've been more loyal to Rosealeen. She became very jealous that Lily was talking to August instead of her. A great word to describe May is mysterious! She has so many secrets. Until i read further I didn't know that April was May's twin sister. And when I found out that's the reason she cries a lot the puzzle peices started to come together. Then, I found out what the wailing wall was for. Before I knew all of this, her life seemed like a complete mystery.

  5. In the story, Rosaleen makes an "L" shaped pancake for Lily. Rosaleen gets distracted and does not pay attention to her food. The pancake burns to a crisp and is unedible. The irony is that June is the person that throws it away in the garbage. Ever since Lily and Rosaleen came to the Boatwrite sister's house, June has a certain orneriness and agitation about them. Some people think it is because of the fact that Rosaleen is black and Lily is white. But there is more to it, and no one can seem to understand why. A word beggining with an L that can relate to Lily is longing. Lily traved over 90 miles to find her mother. She longs to be back in her mothers loving arms again. She also longs to be loved. T.Ray does not treat her the way he should and Lily finds comfort with the Boatwrite sisters, almost as if they were her stand-in mothers.

  6. A word that describes Lily that starts with an L is label. This word reminds me of Lily because she is so addicted to labels. She used to always say how she needs new clothes because she didn't fit in. She was always upset and worried with what she looked like. She is worried with what the other people think about her and call/ label her as.
T.Ray can also be defined by a word. Tempered. He has a huge tempure and can be set off very easily. This was unfortunate for Lily. She wasn't happy with how he acted and did run away his tempure always gets in the way of things and can ruin his life. In fact, it kind of did. He lost his loved ones. His daughter and his wife.

  7. "Spartanburg County," I said. This county was the place where Lily supposedly lived. When May was making her pancakes she used the word "L" for Lily. But another thing that can be used is lying. She lied about where she came from and almost lied about her whole life. She was actually from Sylvan not Spartanburg County. Lily also claimed that her parents had both died, her dad in a tractor accident and the other was missing. She has an aunt somewhere but she doesn't know the address. That shows that she lied about her whole life except her first name and Rosaleen's.
August can be amazing because she is so highly praised by other people. Lily loves her very much because she is like another mom that she always wanted. She is also amazing because she makes honey and sells them in a white town where they think lowly of blacks. She is amazing because of the way she can process things and she has that awesome story about the Black Mary and tells it to everybody to help encourage them.

  8. An "L" word that applies to lily is Lonely. I say this because she she really had no friends when she lived with her stepdad because she would be excluded from going to town. T-ray never let her go so she never had many friends

I beleive that the word lieing can relate well to Lily. She has been lieing to the Calender Sisters about both her and Rosaleen's identities and backrounds. For example, August questiond the stitches in Rosaleen's forehead. Lily obviously, quick to cover up her secrets, lied to the sisters. Lily offered that "[s]he fell down the front steps when we were leaving." Lily had "a natural fibbing habit."
August is very affluent. Affluent as in having an abundance of wealth. August is very wealthy from all the honey she sells. Lily figured that she was "dripping in honey money" and therefore "did not see why she wasn't living in a hot pink mansion somewhere."

  10. L is for lonely. Lily was a young four year old when her mother left her life for good. From that point on she felt lonely and empty inside because T. Ray never showed that he loved her, he only gave her punishment. Rosaleen was there, but she was not her mother. Right before Lily left to rescue Rosaleen, Lily stood up to T. Ray. In response T. Ray told her, “The truth is, your sorry mother ran off and left you. The day she died, she’d come back to get her things, that’s all. You can hate me all you want, but she’s the one who left you.” This statement made by T. Ray only made her feel worse and more alone in the world because she had a father, but to her he did not care about her. After hearing what he said Lily was left confused and she was unsure whether or not to believe him. Either way Lily was still going to be lonely in the end.
M is for manic. May is a special young lady because she had a twin. April and May would do everything together and have special connections about everything. If one felt pain the other would as well. Before April committed suicide she was feeling very depressed, at the same time May had been feeling all of this. When April eventual did die May had become half the person she used to be. May became like a manic person. A manic is an excessively intense enthusiasm or depression. “Oh! Susanna” The quote above says little words, but has a great meaning to May. May being the way she is cannot control her feelings, when she knows she is about to get sad she has a way to hold the tears back. That quote is how she holds the tears back, May sings the song and she becomes happier. If that does not work she will result to the wall where she will write down her feelings and stick it into the rocks.

  11. Lily can be described by the word "loveless". Ever since her mother's death, the only love Lily has received was from Rosaleen, her housekeeper and stand-in mother. "Mostly I just stayed out of his [T. Ray's] way. His only kindness was for Snout, his bird dog, who slept on his bed and got her stomach scratched anytime she rolled onto her wiry back." In this case, Lily was literally treated worse than a dog by her dad. This lack of affection from her dad, in addition to his cruel punishment such as the Martha White grits, caused Lily to run away from home on a search for her mother. Even after settling in the Boatwrights' home with Rosaleen, Lily continues to lack the important thing she has been seeking for years: love. Although August, the most accepting of the Boatwright sisters, takes Lily and Rosaleen in, she doesn't love Lily as her mother would.
After Lily and Rosaleen complete their journey to Tiburon, August is the only one of the Boatwright sisters that takes them in right away. This act of generosity proves that August is an agreeable person. If it weren't for August being agreeable and not prejudiced against Lily being white, Rosaleen and Lily would be living on the streets, and Lily would be nowhere near finding any traces of her mother.

  12. May made Lily an L shaped pancake. June ends up throwing it away into the trash.
If I made a L shaped pancake for Lily it would represent “Love.” I would make it represent love because when she meets Zach, she starts to realize that she loves him. “ It was foolish to think some things were beyond happening, even being attracted to Negroes.” This quote means that Lily is starting to like/love Zach. She is attracted to him, and wants to be with him more. She enjoys spending time with him, whether it is driving in the car, or at the Boatwright’s house.
If I made another shaped pancake for someone, it would be for T. Ray. This T shaped pancake would represent “terror.” I would make it represent terror because terror means fear, and Lily felt total fear around T. Ray. He would make her kneel on grits for at least an hour . T. Ray would always find something, to yell at Lily for, even if it was for reading a book. This is why Lily ended up running away from him with Rosaleen, and is now keeping secrets from the “Calendar Sisters”, so they won’t have to go back home.

  13. An L word that applies to Lily is Lost. Not just is she lost without a mother, she is also lost with herself. “I had myself a good cry. I couldn’t even say why. Just everything, I guess.” Now with a new life, she finds that her dreams may not be attainable. “I’d thought the whole thing about my lost future, the one Mr. Henry encouraged me to believe in by plying me with books and summer reading lists and big talk about scholarships to Columbia College…” She also shows a loss of a feeling of family due to the loss of both parents, and so she is needy for that feeling. During the Lady of Chains story, she thinks, “I am not one of you.”

June reminds me of the word jaded. She is a very world-weary soul, being that she plays music for dying people. She also is negative about many things, including marriage. It also shows in her inhospitality to Lily and Rosaleen. Lily had said, “Maybe she was around death too much”.

  14. Rosaleen made an "L" shaped pancake to represent Lily. June did not like them cooking in the kitchen and making a mess so she agressively threw the "L" in the garbage. "Whats that burning?" Is what June said. "L" can't only stand for Lily. It can mean loved. Loved is how Lily feels when she is around the people who care and love her.
The letter "J" can stand for June or it can stand for jilted which June is. Jilted is June because her romantic relationship came crashing down. This resembles Junes relationship with Neil.

  15. May makes Lily a pancake in the shape of an "L". "L" is for "Lily". A word that starts with "L" that applies to Lily is "lonely".
Lily is a lonely person. Her mother is dead and her father doesn't treat her well. He makes her kneel on grits for hours and he's always yelling at her. "I hate you!" Lily once yells back at him. This shows that she really despises him and she doesn't have a loving parent. Most of the time, kids who don't have a loving parent tend to feel rejected and solitary. Rosaleen, her "stand-in" mother, is the only person Lily loves. Lily doesn't have any friends in school. She feels like she isn't loved at all. As the story goes on, however, it looks like the Boatwright sisters and Zach are starting to become very close to Lily and she isn't feeling as lonely anymore.
A word that starts with "A" and describes August is "amiable". August is amiable because she was the one that told Lily and Rosaleen that they could stay in her house even when June didn't want them to. Also, ever since Lily and Rosaleen moved in, she's been friendly and congenial.
A word that applies to Lily and that starts with an "L" is "lonely". A word that applies to August and that starts with an "A" is "amiable".

"It always caused a tiny jump start in my chest, me thinking that my own mother had stared at this same picture."
A word that can describe May is misery. Ever since May;s twin sister died, May has felt the pain that everyone and thing around her feels. She is in complete misery and has to put her feelings on paper inside of her wailing wall to comfort herself. She also has to hum the tune of "Oh Sussanna!" to keep her calm from all of the misery she is feeling.

  17. L is for loner. Lily is always alone in her family. Her mother died when she was young and she always tended to be independent. She never had many friends, she even says, "I might as well have worn a sign on my back: IM NOT POPULAR AND NEVER WILL BE." She strays off from the group and keeps to herself.
T is for tough. T-Ray is possibly the WORST parent on the face of the earth. He makes his daughter kneel on grits and gives her minimal to no respect. T-Ray is hard on Lily and doesn't care. He treats her like dirt.

  18. the word lonely applies to lily because she feels lonely when she runs away from t ray it is important because the theme of the book is search for identity and to find your identity you always have to go through a period of loneliness. misunderstood stands for may because no one understands her completely and she may be depressed since she goes to the wall almost every day.

  19. NOT FINISHED
One morning at the Boatwright's sisters house. Rosaleen makes an "L" shaped pancake for Lilly. Lilly get distracted and doesn't pay attention to her food because she was to busy because she keeps asking Neil why doesn't June want to marry him. She doesn't pay attention to her food, and Rosaleen is busy as well so she isn't watching the food. Sadly Lilly's "L" shaped pancake burns to a complete crisp. Its really ironic that June is the one to throw it away because they don't really get along so she desides to throe out the pancake, and not let Lilly as well.

Another word "L" could stand for besides "lily" to describe Lily is lonely. In the beginning of the chapter Lily would always say how she did not have many friends and nhow all she wanted was a boyfriend. She also said she wished she had a mom to do her hair. A word that would describe another character that begins with "L" would be T.Ray who is described as a liar by Lily who says that he would lie about things to let Lily feel bad. That is why Lily left.

  21. On page 105, May made an "L" pancake for Lily. June throws it in the trash. A word that describes Lily starting with the letter “L” is lost. This describes Lily because she has no home and no mother. She has no one to go to when she is upset or needs help with something, except Rosaleen. When she ran away from her dad she felt good about going away, but is now even more lost. She has no family members at all. Even if they were mean to her she still wants someone to be with her. She doesn’t know what to do with herself. She is staying with May, June and August so that makes her feel better about her life. On page 134, Lily says “I was hungering for my mother, imagining her calling my name, saying, Lily girl. You are my flower.” She was feeling lost without her mother at that time.

May relates to the word misery. She had and has to deal will an extreme of misery in her life. She had a twin sister name April. May was very close to April, they did everything together. When someone got hurt the other one would end up getting hurt to. When April died, something else also died in May. She had to deal with years of misery. Now June won’t marry Neil and that is causing misery in her life. Any slightest bit of sadness and depression in her life causes May misery.

  22. L is for Lily-
L is for lonely. Lily can be described as lonely. She has had to live her life without the privilege of having a mother to share her feelings and stories with. Sure, she had Rosaleen but, I don’t think they will ever really have the connection a mother and daughter would have. Not to mention, Lily doesn’t really have any friends. As it said in the book, she would spend all her days at the peach stand and reading when she could. So, Lily doesn’t have any “girlfriends” to talk to, hang out with, or even share her secrets and secret feelings with. Rosaleen is also the closest thing Lily has had to a friend which is very sad. Lily has spent most of her life with herself and peaches or a book.
J is for judgmental. June can be described as judgmental. June never really gave Lily and Rosaleen the chance for her to get to know them; she only saw them as what she thought of them in her head. She is always talking to August about how she wants them to leave and how badly she would rather be any place else than with them. Also, when she asks how Lily is at the dinner table, she doesn’t really mean it and its certainly not fair to Lily or Rosaleen. All June did was look at them and think to herself they were misfits with trouble following them to the pink house.

  23. In the story, Lily is a breakfast and May makes a pancake for her shaped as an “L”. When Rosaleen and Lily forget it is there they burn it and June has to throw it in the trash. The word lonely is closely related to Lily’s life. Lily is a lonely girl without her mother. She has never had that many friends and has a father that seems to hate her and not care about her. While in the home of the Boatwrights Lily’s loneliness seems to be fading away. The word lonely describes how Lily feels whenever she thinks about her mother. On page 3 the author writes, “My mother died when I was four years old. It was a fact of life, but if I brought it up, people suddenly get interested in their hangnails and cuticles. Or else distant places in the sky, and seem not to hear me.” This shows that Lily’s loneness can be blamed on the loss of her mother. Lily is lonely without her mother and is lonely without any friends.
The word Rare can be used to describe Rosaleen. She is a very rare character because she helps Lily fill the gap left by the loss of her mother. Not too many people would but a lot of care into a child that is not their own. Rosaleen cares deeply about Lily and can be seen as a Motherly figure. Rosaleen is rare because she is strong even when she should be put down by racist comments. She is strong when she has to go to jail and is beaten badly outside of the jail. Overall Rosaleen is a strong person and the word rare can easily describe her.

  24. To explain Lily i would have to pick lucky. So far in the story she has been very lucky. When she ran away with Rosaleen she wasn't caught and she happened to find a home with some very nice people. Still after a while, nobody has spilled the beans to the police she was staying with the boatwright sisters or her getting caught. All of this is very lucky.
For June it relate her to jumpy. She seems to always be off edge, and when Rosaleen and Lily came looking to stay there she seemed very jumpy at the idea and gave a bologna excuse " because they're white" when Rosaleen was black. I thin June is very jumpy and suspicious.

    Week 2 Option 12

“L” is for longing. Lily is longing to have a mother and to know her mother better. It keeps her up at night thinking about her mother and longing to be close to her. She keeps a special box of her mother’s belongings in a special place away from everyone else. Her longing for her mother brings her to the special place day after day. She goes a very long way to Tiburon because she is longing to find out more about her mother. She goes as far as to tell many lies to know more about her mom. Even the ones close to her, T. Ray and Rosaleen, don’t even know how much she longs for her mother. A quote from the book is found on page 98 when Lily says, “The worst thing was lying there wanting my mother. That’s how it had always been; my longing for her nearly always came late at night when my guard was down.
“A” is for angel. August is an angel to Lily and Rosaleen. She takes them into her home to stay comfortably. She makes both of them feel welcome although the other sister June does not want them in their home. August is an angel because she is very religious and helps Lily learn more about the Black Mary statue and what it resembles. August is an angel to Lily because she might know about Lily’s mother.

I think that the "L" in Lily stands for liar. Even though she has a good reason for lying' she is still lying and so far almost everything she has told the "Caledar Sisters" about herself has been a lie. She lied about her name, her dad being in a tractor accident and why she ran away in the first place. "Rosaleen... Smith and Lily... Williams." To the "Calendar Sisters" Lily Williams is aa orphan just trying to get to her aunt.

The "J" in June stand for judgemental. From the first time they met June didn't trust Lily. "What if her father didn't die in this so- called tractor accident?"June doesn't even want to give Lily a chance to explain herself she just wants her to leave. Luckily the "A" in August stands for awesome because she stood up for Lily and she thinks they should give har a cahnce to expalin herself.

  27. 'L' is for Lily. June throws out the 'L' pancake, because it mistakenly got burnt. An L word that describes Lily is Lost. Lily is lost because she ran away from home, and she doesn't know where to go after the pink house because eventually she will have to leave. Also, she has no mother, so she is lost with no sense of motherly guidance or approval. She's lost, and has a hard time admitting it. Another L word is Love. Lily loves her mother. She knows her mother loves her back, and disregards what T. Ray said about her mother leaving. Lily doesn't get love from T. Ray, but the Boatwrite sisters give her love that fills in the whole in her heart (well, almost fills.) Lily gets love from Zach, because he likes her, and gives her attention she never had before. Lily loves him back, but now he's in jail!
A 'J' word for June is Jilted, because she got jilted when she was going to get married years ago. That is why she doesn't want to get married to Neil, which is why she jilted her relationship with him. They didn't mean the harsh words they said to each other, however, and they made up. June is still in refusal, though.
Also, the 'L' shaped pancake that got burnt to a crisp, symbolizes Lily's secret is known, and not hidden anymore. “Smoke poured off the griddle. The L-shaped pancake burnt to a crisp. “

    ReplyDelete
  28. L is also for lying. Ever since she ran away from home, Lily has been lying to a lot of people. She lied to the people at the hospital and most importantly, the Boatwrights. They were nice enough to let her stay in their house and she continued to lie to them. August already seems to know about Lilys lie and tried to get her to come out about her lie by reading a book. "It's about a girl whose mother dies when she is young," but Lily ignored it and went inside.

J (for June) could also be represented by jealous. Every since the first day she has shown that she does not like the fact that Lily and Rosaleen are staying at her house. She also seems jealous because Lily and Rosaleen are spending a lot of time with her other sisters.

  29. One morning May made a pancake that was and “L” and it was for Lilly, but there are many other words that describe Lilly that start with an “L”. For example the word lonely, sadly describes Lilly very well. Lonely describes Lilly because she does not have any friends and her mother died when she was four. Her father, T-Ray is just mean and cold. He does not care about anything and doesn’t care that she doesn’t fit in. She doesn’t have nice hair or good clothes because she lacks a mother figure. Lilly really has nobody to talk to about teenage girl things and other things that you need a mother or a best friend for. “He didn’t believe in slumber parties or sock hops, which wasn’t a big concern because I never got invited to them anyway, but he did refuse to drive me to town for football games, pep rallies, or Beta Club car washes, which were held on Saturdays. He didn’t not care that I wore clothes I made for myself in home economics class, cotton print shirtwaists with crooked zippers and skirts hanging below my knees, outfits only the Pentecostal girls wore. I might as well have worn a sign on my back :I AM NOT POPULAR AND NEVER WILL BE.” This is a perfect example of how T-Ray made Lilly feel extremely lonely. She not only wasn’t in the latest style but nobody let her or encouraged her to be involved in school activities so she never met any new kids.
The word terrible is also a good word to describe T-Ray because he is mean and nasty to everyone especially Lilly. He is so mean he doesn’t let her have store bought clothes. Not only does he do things that bother Lilly like that but he also doesn’t like when she reads he thinks that it will give Lilly ideas to go to college and he believes that college is a waste of money for girls. This s not even the worst of what he does but he punishes her in the meanest ways. For example he makes her kneel on Martha Grits. “ Get over here and kneel down. I’d been kneeling on grits since I was six, but still I never got used to that powdered glass feeling beneath my skin. I walked toward them with those tiny feather steps you expect of a girl in Japan, and lowered myself to the floor, determined not to cry, but the sting was already gathering in my eyes. T-Ray sat in a chair and cleaned his nails with a pocketknife.” What wonderful father would make their daughter do that? No father should ever make his daughter do something that hurtful. In fact, no person should ever be allowed to do that to anyone. T-Ray is a terrible person.

  30. One morning at the Boatwright house, Rosaleen is making breakfast for everyone, pancakes. When Rosaleen sees Lilly she pour the pancake batter onto the pan in the shape of an "L" and said "L is for Lilly." But suddenly Neil comes into the kitchen for breakfast. And out of the blue Lilly takes her attention off of her food and asks Neil why June won't marry him. After I read this scene the first thing i thought was "Wow Lilly wants to get her nose in everyone's other business, where she doesn't belong." After a few minutes of conversation, Lilly's pancake burns to a tiny crisp. And here comes the irony. June is the one to throw away the pancake. Why I think that is ironic is because ever since Rosaleen and Lilly "moved" into the Boatwright sister's home, June is very agitated about the whole situation. The main problem she has is why is a white girl traveling along with a colored women, in the whole segregation situation society as well. But there is also many unknown reasons so far in the novel. I have so many more thoughts of what could happen in the chapters to come. Such as, June is going to report Lilly to the authorities, or even worse bring Lilly back to her worst nightmare, T-Ray. Lets just wait and see.

  31. During breakfeast one morning, Rosalleen prepares an "L" shaped pancake for Lilly. Another "L" word to describe Lilly would be "Lack." There is alot in life Lilly does not have, a mother, a caring father, an actual family, and a real home. In the first chapter, Lilly describes her life, "T-Ray and I lived just outside Sylvan, South Carolina, population 3,100. Peach stands and Baptist churches, that sums it up." This quote explains Lily`s dreary existance with the two things she actually has, an abusive father and a job working at a peach stand. Lator on in the book Lilly becomes a fugitive and runs away from home. Lilly looses nearly everything, except her hopes for finding out more about her mother`s life and love.

  32. May made Lily a pancake in the shape of an "L" because it is the first letter of her name. Another "L" word to describe her is loving. You would think with Lily's childhood she would be a very pessimistic, sad girl. But Lily still has the ability to love people. She loves Rosaleen, and she often realizes she could never live without her. Lily really loves August, and feels a very special bond with her. Lily loves Zach, but in a different way. Most importantly, Lily loves her mother. She wishes incessantly that she was still alive.
A word to describe August is "amicable." She is very likable, and nice to everyone. She is obviously caring, as she took two strangers into her home. August is someone to depend on, and Lily loves her already.

  33. An “L” word that applies to Lily is lucky. On page 86, August says “Who's gonna take them in if we don't-a white girl and a Negro woman?” What if Lily never found the Boatwrights. What if they never took them in. Where would Lily and Rosaleen go? They wouldn't have had a place to go and might have had to go back to Sylvan. If they had to go back, who knows what kind of gruesome punishments T. Ray had in mind. She's also very lucky she was able to escape T. Ray's home and retrieve Rosaleen from a hospital.
An “A” word that applies to August is anecdote. August loves telling stories and is great storyteller. On page 107, Lily says “One thing I was starting to understand was that August loved to tell a good story. Anecdote is another name for a short story, since August told Lily many short stories that had hidden meanings that Lily was able to figure out, and connected them with her life.

  34. May made an L shaped pancake for Lily. The pancake became burnt, and June threw it into the trash. A word starting with 'L' that describes Lily is lost. She is lost in many ways. First, she is lost in the knowledge of her mother. She wants to know the importance of Tiburon to her mother, and there are many unanswered questions about her that Lily wants to know. Secondly Lily is kind of lost with her own life. She ran away from home, broke Rosaleen out of a hospital, traveled all the way to Tiburon, and is now living with the calendar sisters. NOW what is she going to do? What will happen when she gets back to reality? She already threw her life away, because she is now going to get the ultimate punishment by T. Ray, and is a fugitive. She is severely lost with her life right now, and is lost in other ways, too.
A word starting with 'A' that describes August is assistive. August has assisted Lily with getting used to the Boatwright house. She has provided Lily with consolation, and has really made the adjustment to the house a ton easier. She has also assisted Lily with honey harvesting, and the bee yard etiquette. She has really been an assistive person to Lily.

  35. Another L word that relates to Lily is love. Lily loves plenty of things. That includes bees, Boatwright sisters, and blue. A really weird thing is that she loves peanuts in her coke. However each one of those is a different kind of love expressed by using the same word. Thats why she wishes they had "the eskimo langauge with 32 different kinds of love". You just don't love a color the same way as a person.
For May a good word to use is miserable. She spends a lot of time at the wailing wall. She is almost always humming Oh Susana. Even a bad banana can start her off. It is ridiculous how much she cries and weeps. It's practically twenty-four/seven

  36. A perfect word to describe Lily is liar. Lily, at this point has her whole life built on lies. Back in the early parts of the story, when Lily went to town with Rosaleen, she lied to T-Ray about her reason for going. After Rosaleen got in to trouble, Lily lied to break her out of the hospital. After they became fugitives, Lily had to lie to the convenience store owner about her identity. And now, she's living a lie and still constantly supporting her lie while living with the Boatwright sisters.

For T-Ray, the best adjective to describe him is tyranny. T-Ray has all of the traits of a tyrant in the way he treats Lily. First, he makes her work, even on her birthday. He threatens her and puts heavy restraints on her social life, now allowing her to do many things and making her feel left out in regards to the trends at school. T-Ray abuses and tortures her in many ways. First of all, he mentally abuses her with (what I think are) lies about her mother. Her mother is clearly a soft topic in Lily's mind, and T-Ray takes advantage, saying things like, "The woman could have cared less about you." Lastly, T-Ray also tortures her, making her kneel on grits for hours on end, giving her welts all over her knees.

  37. L is for languishing because she is longing her mother and that is one of the reason she is in tiberon right now. the other reason she is in tiberon is from the neglect from t-ray. Lily is the perfect example of languishing because she is longing her mother, was neglected and abused by T-Ray, she has became week when kneeling on grates, and has been sad from events in her life.
T is for terrifying because t-ray would scare lily and make her full of fear. He would punish her with the grits.

  38. The word I would choose to describe Lilly is logophile. Logophile means "A lover of words". When Lilly was younger she never knew what she wanted to be, then one day a lady asked her that very question. When Lilly didn't have an answer the lady said she could be anything she wanted is she put her mind to it, even a professor or writer. At that instance she decided to be a writer. Her life plan was to be a "Professor and a writer of actual books". The reason I choose logophile is because to be a writer or a professor you need to have a love for words.
Another character would be T.ray. T.ray is Lilly father and the word I would use to describe him is tyrannical. T.ray treats Lilly like she is his slave. He makes her work outside selling peaches in the hot sun. And when she acts out he punishes her severly.
