  1. Lily has learned a lot of information about her mother from August. To her surprize, August took care of her mother when she was a little girl and that she was a handful! But what shocked Lily the most was that T-Ray was right, Lily's mom did leave her behind. T-Ray told her that her mother left because she didn't love her and she didn't want to be part of her life. Then, August set her straight. She said something to the affect of, "Your mother left because she wasn't happy being married to your father. She was depressed and felt that she had to get away. After three months of being here she thought she was strong enough to go back and get you. While she was here all she ever did was say how much she loved and missed you." With all of this news and surprize Lily really didn't know how to handle it. Her first and I think only instinct was to cry her eyes out, which she did. Then, when August left her alone in the honey house she lost it. Lily through a fit that was way out of hand. She wrecked the whole house. There was honey on the walls, glass on the ground, little drops of blood on the floor and wax candles everywhere. With the knowledge that she now has about her mother she seems as if she is becoming depressed. She is not coping well at all! All she feels is sadness, anger and betrayal.

  2. When Lily asks August about her mother, her worst fears are realized: that T-Ray was not lying; that Deborah really ran away from Lily. She was extremely depressed however. She didn’t take care of herself. She didn’t even eat. “Depressed people do things they wouldn’t ordinarily do,” August said, but Lily wouldn’t have it. She felt betrayed by her mother, knowing that she was an “unwanted baby,” and that she ran away.
Lily says that “Knowing can be a curse on a person’s life. I’d traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth.” This tells me that she is unsure whether the ugly truth she has been given or the half-baked lies she has been telling herself is worse. She realized that now she is no better off, and that a pack of lies is just as unsettling as a pack of truth. Now she is just confused, dazed, and removed from everything else.

  3. T.Ray painted a very negative and terrrible picture of Deborah in Lily's mind. But Lily had never lost hope. She always pictured her mother as a very nourturing and loving mother. She never believed that her mother left her and just came back for her things. Lily thought that her mother was just getting more things with Lily by her side as she had always been.
August tells Lily the truth about her mother. She tells Lily that she used to take care of her mother when she was little. Lily learns that her mother loved dolls, poetry, and August. It turns out that Deborah did not love T.Ray and wanted to get out of her relationship with him but the only thing that was holding her back was the fact that she was pregnant with Lily. She loved Lily with all of her heart but she couldnt deal with T.Ray anymore. She decided to leave Lily and T.Ray while she went to Augusts house. The place where Lily was staying was the place that her mother used as a hideaway from her hard life. "'The first day you showed up, I took one look at you and all I could see was Deborah when she was your age. I knew Deborah had a daughter, but I thought no, you couldnt be; it was too much to believe that Deborah's daughter would turn up in my parlor. Then you said your name was Lily, and right that minute I knew who you were.'" This quote shows the connection august and Deborah had wwhen she was just a little girl. It must have been very strong and lasted a long time. And ultimately up to the point when Deborah died.
Lily thinks, “Knowing can be a curse on a person’s life. I’d traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth" after she learns about her mother. Lily is coping with this knowledge by thinking of it as the right thing. The truth is much better than lies and Lily thinks of it as doing the right thing. She is feeeling as if the truth was like a pack of cigarretts that creep up to you and eventually kill you.

  4. Lily learned a lot about her mother, Deborah, from August. She learns that Deborah did really run away from Sylvan because she was depressed and left Lily with T. Ray. Lily says to August, "It was easy for her to leave me, because she never wanted me in the first place." She learns that August used to work for Deborah's family as a nanny. That's how they knew each other. When Deborah ran away from T. Ray and Lily, she went to the Boatwrights' house. She stayed there for about three months and then she started missing Lily so she went back for her. That's when she died.
Lily is feeling dejected and upset. She misses Deborah even more now because she knows more about her. She didn't want to hear that Deborah actually did leave without her. She also felt some anger before because of that. That anger, though, disappeared when she saw a picture of Deborah and her together smiling.
Lily learns a lot of things about her mother, things she didn't want to hear.

  5. In the beginning of the novel, Lily lies to the Boatwright’s about her family. Lily says that T.ray is dead and Lily tells them that her last name is Williams. As the story progresses, Lily feels more comfortable around the sisters and feels like she is a part of the family. She has changed her views towards the sisters as the story progresses. Lily came to Tiburon to learn about her mother and to find any piece that could be put together to fix her life. Lily finally has it in her to talk to August about her mother. To tell her the truth, but Lily is in for one big shock. August says, “The first day you showed up, I took one look at you and all I could see was Deborah when she was your age. I knew Deborah had a daughter, but I thought n, you couldn’t be; it was too much to believe that Deborah’s daughter would turn up in my parlor. Then you said your name was Lily, and right that minute I knew who you were.” August didn’t tell Lily because she was afraid she was not ready to know about her mother, she didn’t want to risk her running away. Lily learns tons of new things about her mother. Lily learns that August was a housekeeper in her mother’s house. Lily learns that her mother used to love dolls but disliked schoolwork. Lily learns about her mother and how she was pregnant with Lily and that’s when Deborah got married to T.ray. One thing that upset Lily was when August tells her that her mom left her with T.ray to go back to stay with her and she didn’t bring Lily with her. Towards the end of chapter 12, Lily thinks, “Knowing can be a curse on a person’s life. I’d traded in a pack of life for a pack of truth.” Lily is coping with this knowledge with mixed emotions. Lily thinks, “Teach me how to do that. Teach me how to take all this in.” Lily is having mixed emotions inside, at one point she feels bad for her mother and then at one point she hates her for leaving her with T.ray. Lily feels like she is unwanted and wants to learn everything about her mother. Lily is now feeling relieved but at the same time hurt about why her mother left her in the first place. Lily is angry and I don’t blame her. If I was in her situation I would be angered to find this all out after a long time. Lily learns a lot about her mother from August and is angry and feels like she was unwanted. This effected Lily and who she is as a person.

  6. Lily learns an indescribable amount of information about her mother, from August. Some things that Lily learned that day weren't easy to grasp or to understand. To start off, Lily learned that August used to take care of Deborah when she was a young girl. Her and August got along very and well and enjoyed spending time with each other. As Deborah grew older, she met T.Ray and was sure that she was in love with him. They married and started out happy as could be, but then when T.Ray found out Deborah was pregnant, he grew angry. Now Deborah had no choice but to stay with T.Ray and his growing abuse. Lily learned that, like herself, her mother was fond of English and poetry. Next, August describes in detail of how Deborah fled T.Ray soon after Lily was born. This made Lily extremely confused and bitter towards her mother. August then assured Lily that Deborah was going to go back for Lily. This day actually turned out to be the day Deborah was killed. August then decided to share some happy things about Deborah that Lily didn't know. Lily learned that her mother had an imaginary friend, Tica Tee. At this point in the reading, I wasn't sure why Lily was still so bitter towards her mother. The situation Deborah was in was not at all easy, and Lily needed to accept that. Then August says, "Depressed people do things they wouldn't ordinarily do." As soon as I read this quote, I was praying that Lily would forgive her mother for not taking her with her that day. Unfortunately, Lily wasn't too convinced that her mother had once loved her. The things thrown at Lily this day were hard to sort out and define. Information was thrown out at all different angles and speeds, and Lily was spinning. At this point in the novel, it was no question she was confused and angry. Confused at how her mother could so easily leave her, and angry she hadn’t known all this before. Lily definitely needs some time to sort out her feelings and face the truth.

  7. Lily learns from August that her mother really did leave her before her final visit. August told Lily that Deborah was really depressed and broke down during the visit, confirming what T. Ray said about her leaving Lily, but was planning to go back to Sylvan to get Lily and was planning to take her to the Boatwrights. It was painful for Lily to both tell her story and bear what August had to say, and she cried a lot because of it to try to get over the truth, and managed to cope with it by also realizing that she couldn't give up the truth, then by listening to some advice August had to say. August told Lily, "Your mother made a terrible mistake, but she tried to fix it. There is nothing perfect. There is only life." Finally, she lets out all that anger against her mother by smashing jars in the honey house and trashing the room. Now she is feeling confusion and accepts the truth since she can't change it, although it has changed so many of Lily's assumptions about her mother that Lily built hope on.

  8. Lily has held onto the memories that her mother was a caring, kind woman whose death was a tragic accident. Clearly, from what August Boatwright told her about Deborah Fonatel, her dead mother, she couldn't have been more wrong. Lily thought that her mother really cared about her and loved her. But Lily learns a fair few facts about her mother from August. August says that she used to work for Deborah when she was a girl. They were very good friends, except for one day that Deborah ran away. This was the beginning of where August could see that her feelings were fragile. When Deborah met T. Ray, August could again start to see some of her hidden feelings. She had a child, too. August could clearly see that Deborah was depressed, not at all how she used to be when she was a child. Deborah was planning on running away and staying with the Boatwrights. The day she died, she was packing up her things to leave. T. Ray got into a spot of trouble with her, and she pulled out a gun from the closet. It fell to the floor, and Lily picked it up to help her mother. But the gun went off in her hands, killing her mother.

Lily said, "Knowing can be a curse on a person's life. I'd traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth." Lily is having a tough time coping with this sudden polar change in feelings. Before confronting August, Lily thought her mother really cared about her, not that she wanted to leave Lily with her husband and run away. Lily is trying to accept the "new truth", but memories you have held onto since you were a child are very hard to let go of. Changes don't happen in seconds. At first, Lily feels hate towards her mother, at wanting to leave her. She is furious, and August is surprised. She had shocked August, and Lily was pleased. Her entire feelings had changed, and she felt completely different towards her mother after her talk with August and the information she revealed.

Lily learnes alot about her mother. Somethings she didn't want to learn and other things she doesn't even want to think about. She learnes that her mother left T.Ray because she was disgusted by him. She also learned that August was her sitter. NOw she doesn't have to keep up the lies and now she can think about the truth.

  10. In Chapter 12, Lily finally finds out the truth about her mother. August tells her that she has been taking care of Deborah ever since she was little. Lily also found out an unpleasant part of her life story: Deborah had left Lily for three months when she was little. Deborah had suffered from depression, and needed to get away from T. Ray, so she went to Tiburon and stayed with August for a while. After three months, she came back for Lily, only to be killed. Lily now knows that her mother had left her. This changes her perspective of her mother entirely. "I hate her. She wasn't anything like I thought she was." This is what Lily says about her mother after hearing the truth from August. She had imagined her mother to be loving and caring, but she had abandoned her instead.
"Knowing can be a curse on a person's life. I'd traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth, and I didn't know which one was heavier (page 255)." Lily had wanted to know about her mother so badly, but now that she knows the truth about her leaving, she is carrying around the weight of the knowledge that she was abandoned by her mother. Lily is now feeling anger. "How dare she? How dare she leave me? I was her child." She thinks that her mother did the wrong thing by leaving her.

  11. August told Lily that her mom was a nice sweet women. When she came back one time she didnt look the same. She looked like she lost her self and she wasnt going to come back. Lily is not coping very well with the knowlege she learned about her mom. She rather her lies about her mom than the truth becuase nothing is going well for her. She is not feeling very well now. Now she knows that part of what T.Ray was telling her was the truth and that is not good becuase t.ray was not saying good things.

  12. Lily decides to talk with August. She learns that her mother left her and she was coming back for her when she came back, but then the accident occurred. Lily also learns that her mother never ment to have her, and the only reason she got married to T Ray is because she was pregnant with Lily. Lily feels like she was unwanted and that she made Deborah's life not happy anymore. Lily isn't coping with the knowledge very well. “It was easy for her to leave me, because she never wanted me in the first place.” said Lily. This tells me that Lily is feeling like she was a mistake, and Deborah's solution was just to leave her behind, and not deal with it. She feels like her life was fake. She feels frustrated and fatigued. After the info sinks in, she feels infuriated and hateful towards her mother for leaving her behind. Lily feels like she ruined what could be a very satisfying life when she finds out her mother was coming back for her and she was going to live at the Boatwright's house. Now, she feels like her life is false, she blames herself for everything, and she is having trouble taking in the info.

  13. Lily learns all about her mother from August Boatwright. Lily learns all about Deborah, her mothers, childhood because August cared for Deborah for most of her life as a child. Also, Lily learned why Deborah left T-Ray and Lily and the reason she came back. The reason she came back wasn't what T-Ray told Lily, which was that she only came for all her stuff, but that she came back for all her stuff AND Lily. T-Ray made it seem like Deborah was abandoning Lily with the horrible, selfish T-Ray. Lily also recieves, from August, some of Deborahs things in a hat box. There is a whale pin, which T-Ray had given to Deborah as a gift when they were in love and when he was caring. There is also a brush Deborah used with a few strands of her own hair in it, a hand held mirror, and a picture of Lily as a baby and Deborah looking down upon her, smiling. At first, Lily hated knowing the truth about her mother, how Deborah had actually left Lily with T-Ray for so long at first. Sh esaid she hated her mother and wished she had rotted in rehab since she was already such a mess and clueless from living with that beast called T-Ray. Lily begins to think more highly of her mother once again when August finishes the story of Deborahs life and reveals the fact that Deborah had gone back for Lily once she became less of a mess.

  14. Lily learns many different things from August, though she is not sure on how to take them. Lily learns that August was a maid, or nanny for Deborah’s family. When she got all depressed she turned to the Boatwright’s family for help. Upon arriving at the bright pink house the sisters thought she was crazy because of her choice in actions while there. After three months the mother started having her senses return to her, she forgot her new born child. She went back to get her stuff and her beloved child and she never returned because of the incident. During Deborah’s younger life she met T. Ray and they were deeply in love. August told Lily it was almost like he worshiped her. He asked her to marry her, but the fun love feeling disappeared. She ended up saying yes later on because she was pregnant with Lily. When Lily heard this she thought she was an unwanted child because Deborah did leave and T. Ray had their neighbor watch over her while the mother was gone.
When Lily thinks, “Knowing can be a curse on a person’s life. I’d traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth,” she literally trades in all the lies she told August and the others to now know the truth about her mother. When she finds out she does not know what to think about her mother actual leaving because T. Ray was right and not lying. August tells depressed people can do abnormal things because of what they are feeling, but Lily still cannot help feeling she was an unwanted child because Deborah did not love T. Ray in the end. She did not want to be with him, let alone have a child with him. Deborah’s depression made her leave him and Lily just cannot understand that. Now she feels hate and anger towards her mother for it. Lily does not know how to cope with it because she still does not understand or want to believe that her mother left her, even if it was because of depression.

  15. Lily learns from August that her mother was once living with the Boatwrights. Lily also found out that May, August, and June got the "roach exterminating" technique from Lily's mom. Lily dealt with this knowledge by being a little bit nervous. She felt kind of relieved to know the truth.

  16. Lily learned many thing from August. She learned that from the beginning, August knew her true identity. The conversation then sprung in to action. August explained that she knew Deborah and that she was the housekeeper, raising young Deborah from 4 to 19. Then August goes in to more specific details about her mother. August tells Lily about Deborah and Lily listens with eager to every detail. Afterwards, Lily reveals the truth about T.Ray, and how he really wasn't dead. She talks about "the incident" and she starts crying like pouring rain. Lily is coping with the new knowledge not so well. She is disappointed about her conversation with August. She then ends up breaking honey jars by throwing them. She is feeling sad and disappointed. It was the next morning that Rosaleen consoled her and helped her clean up the mess.

  17. After Lily and Zach talk, she decides that she needs to talk to August about her mother. She learns a lot about her mother from August. Lily is surprised to find out that August knew exactly who she was the entire time. August told Lily that she worked as the housekeeper for Deborah’s mother and helped raise Deborah from age 4 to age 19. August talks about Deborah as a child. August tells Lily stories about her mother’s childhood, teenage years, and marriage to T. Ray. She explains that Deborah met T. Ray after moving to Sylvan and that he was very dedicated to her for the first few years of their marriage. After she was married to T. Ray for a while she became depressed. She called August and asked if she could spend some time at the honey farm with her. August tells Lily that when she agreed, she expected Deborah would come visit with the baby. When she arrived, however, August explains, she was alone.
After Lily is thrown all this information about her mother, she says, ““Knowing can be a curse on a person’s life. I’d traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth.” Lily is confused about all the information that she is given. She is having a mental battle with herself. She can’t decide if she was happy that she now knew the truth about her mother. Lily cries a lot while being told her mother’s story. In general, she doesn’t really know how to deal with everything that has just been thrown at her.

  18. Lilys mom has always been a mystery to her, she has never been around. So lily has been striving to really findout the truth. So after a talk with August she learnes a couple of things. the first is how August actully took care of Deborah when she was little. Next was the fact she loved penut butter as August said "she loved peanut butter thats all she wanted peanut butter monday thru friday". The last was how she loved her doles and she alwayes held tea parties for them in the garden area. Debroah also hated to do all school work August had to but up a fight to do it. with the knowledge she has gotten as she said " i saw my mother perched behind August on a tree limbgoing throught each line of stopping by woods on a snowy evening. knowing more about her mother has boosted her confidece and she knows now that in fact tray was lying about Debrouh she loved lily.

  19. When Lily is faced with the truth about her mother, there are a few things that cause her to be overwhelmed with anger. First, she finds out that her conception caused her mother to be stuck with T-Ray. She became self-blaming and angry at her own existence. Next, she found out her mother, in fact, did actually leave her. Lily was angered at her mother this time for abandoning her to live with T-Ray. Lastly, she found out that Deborah had come back for her, but was caught by T-Ray. This made Lily mad at her mother again, this time for not hurrying up. These things mixed together into a cocktail of furiousness made Lily mad at herself and her mother, even becoming mad at everything. A quote from Lily, "You're not angry. You don't have any right to be angry. What you did to your mother is a lot worse than what she did to you. But you can't talk yourself out of anger. Either you're angry or you are not," is a great display of the things that anger her.

  20. Lily learns some good and some bad things about her mother from August. August explains that she worked as a housekeeper in Deborah’s house as a kid and helped raise Deborah from age 4 to 19. August talks about Deborah as a little kid, and Lily eagerly listens to every single detail. August continues to explain that T. Ray he was very dedicated to Deborah for the first few years of their marriage. However, Deborah became depressed with her marriage and came in contact with August and asked if she could spend time with her at her house and with the bees. August then tells Lily the worst possible thing Lily could hear. August tells her that when Deborah arrived at the house, she didn't have Lily in her arms as expected.
“Knowing can be a curse on a person’s life. I’d traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth.” Lily is obviously not very happy with this knowledge. She shows it by smashing honey jars on the ground. Lily had this thought in her head that her mother could never leave her, only to find out that she did just that.

  21. August tells Lily that she worked with Deborah when she was young and raised her from age 4 to 19. She also has some of her belongings with her still. Lily feels betrayed by T.Ray because he didnt tell her what her mother was like or anything and tried to paint an ugly picture in Lilys mind

  22. Lily learns many things about her mother from August. She found out things that she didn’t want to hear. For example, she learned that her mother married T.Ray because she was pregnant with her. At first she didn’t want to marry him but was forced to because of this. Lily learned that after being with T.Ray for a while, she became really depressed and left him. When she learned that her mother didn’t take her with her, she said “I hate her.”
Lily discovered that sometimes lies can be just as hard as the truth. She was having a really difficult time accepting this. She was finding out that the truth she was looking for was harder to accept than the lies that T.Ray told her. She was coping with the knowledge by becoming “hard and angry”. She is feeling that her mother abandoned her and left her with an angry father.

  23. Lily talks to August(Deborah's house maid) and learns that she was an unwanted baby and her mother was pressured to marry T.Ray because she was pregnant with her. Deborah left T.Ray without bringing Lily. However she came back for Lily and then T.Ray and her got into a fight. Lily still remembers when she shot her mom by mistake though.

Knowing that her mother left her, Lily is enraged. She smashes a bunch of honey jars against the wall. She feels like her mom had abandoned her and that she was a terrible parent."I hate her" "I hope he rots in that place" "Depressed people abandon their children?" is what Lily says. This shows how much she really hates her Mom right now.

  24. Lily has learned a lot about her mother. She learned about the good and bad things. Lily learned that August took care of Deborah for about nine years. Here are some of the things Lily learned about Deborah. She loved peanut butter and it was the only thing she would have on her sandwich. She loved her dolls and would have tea parties for them in the garden. Deborah hated schoolwork. August had to force her to do her work. Lily also learned that she was sort of a mistake. T.Ray and Deborah did not plan on having Lily. Lily was also the reason Deborah got married to T.Ray. She felt that since she was pregnant with his baby, she should get married to him. Lily learned that Deborah went through a depression and left T.Ray. Lily was shocked to find out that her mother left her too. When Lily found that out, she said she hated her mother. Although Lily then found out that Deborah came back for her and was going to bring her back to Augusts’ house. While she was packing, she was shot and killed.
“Life is full of surprises.” This quote relates to what Lily was feeling. She was very surprised when she found out some of the things about her mother. I guess Lily learned that not all surprises are good.
At first Lily was coping with the knowledge of her mother terribly. Lily said she hated her mother numerous times and repeated over and over again that she was unwanted. When Lily found out that her mother went back to get her, she realized that her mother really did love her. These things are very hard to take in for Lily but she is coping with it very well. She is letting everything out to August and that is the best way to cope with your problems.

  25. Lily learns that her mother really left her, just like T. Ray said. She also learns that August helped raise her and she lived at the hone house for a while, when she ran away from T. Ray. Sounds just like Lily. Her mother came back for her and thats when Lily accidentally killed her.
She is coping kind of good, in my opinion, She is constantly crying. August tells her, "It hurts, I know it does. Let it out. Just let it out."

  26. Lily learns from August that her mother stayed with the them. August tells Lily that her mom had stayed in the bee house when she had left T.Ray. When Deborah was little, August had worked at her house, and June resented Lily originally, because June was unhappy that August worked for Deborah's family. Most importantly, Lily finds out that her mom left her but came back to get her from T.Ray, since she missed Lily so much.

Lily is happy she knows the truth behind her mother’s death now. She had so many worries about her mother. She wasn’t sure if T.Ray was lying to her, but she was happy to find out he was. Lily loves her mother even more now. Lily now knows her mother loved her and she wasn’t going to leave her.

  27. Lily has learned some things about her mother that she never knew about. She learns from august that her mother has been in tiburon. August took care of her when she was younger. August explained to her that when she met T ray, they fell in love and they got married. The reason why T ray is mean is because deborah left him to get lily back. "Knowing can be a curse on a person's life. I'd traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truth". Lily feels shocked after she hs been told all the stuff that has been revealed about her mother

  28. Lily had a preconceived notion about her mother. Although Lily didn't have her facts straight, she refused to believe her father who told her Deborah left her. Lily soon learned from August that T-Ray was sort of true. Deborah was very upset with her life with T-Ray, and left both him and Lily. She went to the Boatwright's who she from when she was a child and August was her housekeeper. Later, after some time to get better, she decided to go back home to get Lily and then return to Tiburon. However she never did make it back. Lily is completely shocked and extremely upset after hearing this news. She claims to hat her mother, and even throws honey jars against the wall in a fit of anger.

  29. Lilly went searching for more information about her mother and it turned out that August new more information about Deborah than Lilly ever imagined. August knew Deborah very well. When Deborah was a young girl and lived in Richmond Virginia August was her nanny or the maid of the house and she took care of Deborah. She watched over Deborah and would clean around the house she was like a Rosaleen to Lilly. Deborah loved August, and August loved Deborah. “I love you,” August said, “ just like I loved you mother.” August loved Deborah and thought she was a wonderful person. August knew all about Deborah’s life because she watched her grow up. When August moved to her grandmother’s house and became a beekeeper Deborah was very upset to see August go because they were so close. After Deborah had Lilly she became depressed over the years at Sylvan and didn’t really like it there. She was overwhelmed with sadness and was very un-happy. During this time she went to find August and asked her for help. Since she was so depressed she left Lily behind with T-Ray. August took care of Deborah while she was depressed and tried to help her get better. She stayed in the honey house were Lilly is saying now. Lilly was amazed that August knew Deborah so well.
Lilly thinks, “ Knowing can be a curse on a persons life. I’d traded in a pack of lies for a pack of truths.” Lilly is having a hard time understanding what her mother had done when Lilly was four years old. She just could not understand how her mother could have left her behind with T-Ray. She was very upset, she felt alone and unwanted and this hurt her very much. She was so upset and could not believe that T-Ray was telling the truth about Deborah running away and leaving Lilly behind. She was still heartbroken even knowing that her mother came back for her once she had gotten a little better. Lilly was feeling hate, because she hated her mother for leaving her. For fourteen years she based her life around her mother loving her and T-Ray just making up lies about how she ran away. “I hate her!” Lilly said. “She wasn’t anything I thought she was. Lilly was very upset and overwhelmed with all the new things she learned about her mother and there was a little place inside that wished she had never learned the truth about her mother. The truth was too hurtful for Lilly to live with.

  31. Lily learned a lot about her mother from August. She learned that August had taken care of Deborah when she was little. She would pack her lunches and iron her clothes. August said that she loved peanut butter and loved playing with dolls. She also said that she hated schoolwork, though. Another thing August mentioned was that she had given Deborah the wooden picture of Black Mary soon before she died. The big secret that was revealed by August was that she had actually left Lily behind to go to Tiburon. "I knew we'd come to the place in the story I feared the most." This is how Lily knew she was about to be told something she would regret to told. She knew she would hear the answer that was not wanted to be heard.
Lily had to cope greatly with this fast income of knowledge. She was feeling pretty upset about everything, especially the fact that her mother had left her to go to Tiburon. In this case, knowing WAS a curse. It would've been best if Lily kept the idea of her mother in her head, instead of knowing the truth. Although, I guess she would have to find out eventually. "I hate her," was what Lily said after August told her. This shows how big Lily's perspective of her mother changed; from a loving, caring mother that would never let go of her child, to a heartless mother that didn't care about her child. Lily had to deal with a lot after the information was told.
