  1. It almost seems that because Zach is replacing T-Rays place in Lily's life, he is sort of becoming T-Ray, only not as terrible. Zach began changing when he was thrown in jail for no good reason. This only happened because a white man was taunting Zach's friends (who are black of course) and one of the friends decided to throw a glass bottle at the white mans face. It busted his noes and the cops came. No one knew who threw the bottle and no black person would confess. Zach didn't want to rat out his friend. He was in jail for about a week until a girl came saying she was in the theatre near by the incident and saw who threw the bottle. All the charges were dropped on behalf of Zach. This really influenced him and he's changing to a more bitter person. He used to be the sweetest, most nicest boy! Being thrown in jail made him angry. It seemed to teach him anger, as if he didn't know, or didn't want to know, how to feel it. Lily confronted Zach about his change because she was upset about it. She said, "Your so angry all the time now." Zach thought it to be all the anger and problems like segregation in the world are swirling up around him and he has had enough.

  2. Zach has seemed to be taking a bitter tone because of getting arrested. As a result he had changed. Lily figures out and slowly easies in to why he let this affect him, “Sometimes, Lily, I’m so angry I wanna kill something.” Lily takes this in because she does not want him to change in a bad way. To keep him from let his feelings control him she tells him not to let the anger he feels turn him mean like the boys had done to her. Being in the jail cell has forced Zach to earn higher grades than he ever has achieved. Also, he has become determined to leave when this year is complete and go to college, nothing keeping him from going. Zach has changed not physically from his experiences in jail, but mentally. He is staying with a clean slate, carefully choosing the correct path to move him forward in a successful manner.

  3. Zach is changing becuase he went to jail. He became more of a bad guy in a way. Like not a bad guy but one of those guys that do what they can to save someone but end up in jail. He isnt changing in a bad way though, which is good. He is also going to be changing because may died and since may died he will deffidently be changing becuase she was very close with him.

HE is become a little more separated with Lily. He even says that jail can change a guy, and that is what happened.

  5. After Zach got arrested, his attitude changed a lot. When talking to Lily in the garden on Mary Day, he said how "That jail cell is going to make me earn higher grades than ever before." Before the arrest, he only seemed half serious about becoming a lawyer, but now he has a strong determination to get into college and become one. He's become noticeably bitter, but also more proactive about change and civil rights right now, trying to break down racial barriers exposed by his arrest, and Lily says she could sense the change coming. "We can't think of changing our skin. Change the world-that's how we gotta think," he once said to Lily. All of this was because of the racism Zach witnessed in his arrest and the reason behind his arrest. It made him very aware of a problem that he didn't feel the need or ability to solve before, but now was forced to do something about it.

  6. Ever since his imprisonment as a result of his race, and for his refusal to turn in a friend, Zach merely becomes more empowered, driven, and focused towards changing the course of his life. Angered by the mistreatment of his people, Zach has developed a hatred for himself for not being able to do anything. Powerless, he expresses his emotions throughout his actions and dialogue in the last few chapters of the novel, The Secret Life of Bees. Page 224, “He swung the hoe with a blaze of angry grunts,” shows that Zach has a lot on his mind, and releases his stress through the pain of manual labor. Page 230, “Sometimes, Lily, I'm so angry I wanna kill something,” shows that Zach's attitude is changing.
There are many reasons for Zach's sudden change in attitude. He no longer wanted to be treated poorly because of his skin color. He wanted people to understand he was just as capable of becoming a lawyer compared to everyone else. On page 230, Zach says, “Nobody will believe how hard I'm gonna study this year. That jail cell is gonna make me earn grades higher than I ever got. And when this year is over, nothing can keep me from leaving here and going to college.” The author explicitly demonstrates Zach's determination through his motivational speech. A lot of the past events, including May's death, may have impacted Zach's change in attitude towards life.

  7. Zach is changing because August probably told Zach everything about Lily killing her mother. This way, Zach would really be afraid around Lily and would not want to go anywhere near her. Plus, Lily broke Rosaleen out of jail so that would also make them fugitives.

  8. Growing up with T. Ray didn’t give Lily a very good opinion of men. Fortunately, when Lily moves in with the Boatwright sisters, she meets Zach. Zach becomes the leading man in Lily’s life. In chapter 9, Lily rides into town with Zach to buy a new radiator. A group of white men begin to taunt Zach and his friends. One of Zach’s friends throws a bottle at a white man’s face. They will not revile who threw the bottle, and all the boys are taken to jail. After returning from jail, Zack takes on a bitter tone. Lily begs Zach “not to end up angry and violent, as bad as a white racist.” Zach promises that he will not. Zach is changing. Lily says that he has a fire in his eyes that was not there before he went to jail. He is less gentle and a little bit more upfront. When he went to jail, Zach realized how cruel and unfair the world truly was. He is changing because he’s tired of being pushed around by white men. Even though Zach has come to realize the harsh reality of life, he promises Lily that he will not end up angry and violent, and that they will find a way to be together in the future.

  9. Zach is changing in a way that is recognizable to Lily. he is expressing his true feelings for Lily and he proved that after May's funeral, when he and Lily kissed. he may be changing because of the recent events. May's funeral ay have had an impact on him. he may feel more sensitive, which brought out the change in him. also, he served time in the "slammer". Some hard time done can change a man. It was definitely a contributing factor to his change. Also, now that he has changed and Lily has acknowledged that, they told each other that they would find more time to be together. Finally, the long wait ended for Lily to tell her true story, and she asked August to tell Zach her story. This, too, may have also influenced Zach.

  10. Writing Option 1-
Zach has changed a lot since Lily first met him. Zach had never really had any life altering experiences in his life; he was unaware of all the cruelty in the world. When he finally experienced something unfair, he realized what he can do to change how some people in the world look at things. He realized that if he made something of himself, he could make a difference for him and for other people like him. He thought, maybe if he exceeded other peoples’ expectations, others would follow his lead and show just how much anyone can do.
Zach is changing because he wants to make a difference for people. He also wants to make a different life for himself. He doesn’t just want to be a football star; he wants to be a lawyer. He is so determined to become a lawyer and achieve great things so he can motivate other people to do the same and be the best they can be. He is planning on showing people just how much they can achieve no matter what people think of them, where they come from, or how they are raised. He’s showing them that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can be great.

  11. Zach is changing since he has gotten out of jail. He is acting differently. He is acting meaner and more stubborn. Ithink that he is changing like this because he has been in jail and he has realized that him and Lily can not be together because of their color difference. He is just realizing now that the only person he loves and the only person who loves him he cannot be with. He is being opened up to racism and realizing how cruel people can be and how serious this is.for example,he said “Lily, I like you better than any girl I’ve ever known, but you have to understand, there are people who would kill boys like me for even looking at girls like you.” -Zach, p.135

  12. Everything changes with time. The purest of steels and irons rusts with the ages, great monuments, buildings, and skyscrapers fall into disuse, and in time the very fabric of the universe will fizzle out and go cold. Zach, the leading man in Lily's life, is no different. In the beginning of the book, as one of two prominent male figures in Lily's life, he was the friendly "negro boy", the singer, the wannabe-lawyer. As was demonstrated in Zach and LIly's frequent trips to town together, Zach cares about Lily's feelings and future. When Lily starts to cry because she worries about her own future, conscious of Zach's ambitions, Zach asks her what is wrong. Of course, this should come about naturally to anyone, but the fact that Zach cares about her strengthens Lily's feelings for him. However, as with all things, he changes over time, and after his breif foray in jail, Zach emerges a changed man. He is aesthetically and superficially the same person, but on the inside, he is moody and sulking. He admits it himself. "I know I've changed", he says one day to Lily. But that doesn't change the fact that he still cares about her and the calendar sisters.

But why is Zach changing? Well, do you remember April, the most unfortunate of the calendar sisters, May's twin sister who killed herself after a depression? LIke April, Zach has seen the truth of the american south, that racial prejudice and injustice that goes on here, most of it directed toward african americans if but only for their skin color. Of course, Zach isn't going to kill himself (presumably), but his breif days spent in jail and his experiences with the cause of his imprisonment, serve enough to make it clear to him that there is abundant evil in the world, and much of it cannot be done away with.

  13. "There was a place inside him now that hadn't been there before. Heated, charged, angry." According to Lily, Zach is becoming very angry and negatively charged. He went from being this very nice, loving kid, to the same kid, but he now has an angry side as well.
I my opinion, there are a few reasons Zach is changing. First, he has experienced life in jail. That life can be extremely vigorous and ugly. This has the capacity to change a person. They can become very dark and there will be an angry side in them that wasn't there before. Another reason the Zach is changing could be because May passed away. Everyone copes with death differently, and maybe since Zach believes that this was all his fault, he is strictly focusing on the negative. Death can make people change temporarily or for good. There is really no way of knowing other then time.

  14. Zach is angry at the world because he got arrest even though he was not involved in the incident. He is also angry because no one thinks he is going to go to college or get good grades. Being in the jail cell is going to make him earn good grades and get him out of Tiburon. Earlier in the book he said he wants to become a lawyer. He promises Lily after he makes something of himself, he will come back and be with her.

  15. Zach is the leading man in Lily's life. He has replaced T.Ray in her life, but in a good way. T.Ray has always been the male figure in her life, but he was teaching her about how to live, but it is not necessarily in a food way. Zach came into her life and brightened it up. Ever since Lily had layed eyes on Zach, it was love at first sight. However, in this weeks chapter, he seems to be taking a bitter tone. Ever since he was convicted of the crime of assaulting a white man, he has been taking life more seriously. He also feels guilty for May. After he finds out that he is the reason why May killed herself, he is filled with enormous giult and sorrow. "'Sometimes Lily, I'm so angry I wanna kill things.'" This quote can show the newfound anger he feels toward things.

  16. Zach is now the leading man in Lily’s life, since he has replaced T. Ray. However later in the book, he seems to be taking on a bitter tone. You can see that Zach is changing because Lily and he have not been talking recently, and have not been hanging out as much as they have in the past. The reason Zach is changing is because he went to jail, and because of that he has become more mature, and not as involved in childish things. Something that also has changed Zach is May’s death. May’s death has changed Zach because in a way it was almost Zach’s fault, because when May heard about him being arrested she went right to the Wailing Wall and then went to the river, and committed suicide.

  17. Throughout these previous chapters zach has been changing alot about his lawyer dreams. Zach seems to want to succecd after his arest and wants to stop this black and white fight. I think ever since he got arested he wants to get back at everyone who is doubting the black people. As zach said "we cant think of changing our skin, change the world thats how we have to think". By this he means that he is proud to be black and wants to chang the world. Zach starts to chang after his arest and really wants to make and impact on the law side. Be a lawyer and helpout many black people in need.

  18. Zach is a leading man in Lily’s life. He has replaced T.Ray in a good way. Now he seems to be taking a biter tone. He is changing. It seems like he doesn’t like Lily as he used to. He also seems very angry when he is around. “Coming into his presence was like stepping up to a gas heater, to a row of blue fire burning in the dark, wet curve of his eyes.” Now Zach has been a little more racist, by telling Lily about law school and busting butt. He didn’t say white butt, but Lily knew that he meant that. All he would talk about were racist riots in New Jersey.
Zach is changing because he is thinking of changing the world. By this he means that he will love a white girl, and become a lawyer. His biggest issue of changing the world is becoming the lawyer. He knows that there are no black lawyers out there, and that is what he wants to be.

  19. Zach is changing by being more driven to succeed his goal of being a lawyer. He will work as hard as he needs to to get great grades.

He is changing because he got put into a jail because of his color. He wants to be different than the other blacks. Zach wants to prove that a black man could do what a white man could do. To be treated fairly is all he wants.

  20. In the later chapters, Zach has started to change. He now has a sort of aggressive mind, and he talks about a lot of heated topics, like New Jersey race riots, sit-ins, and Malcolm X. He changed from when he used to be peaceful, to him being rebellious now. "There was a place inside him now that hadn't been there before. Heated, charged, angry." This is how Lily described his change in behavior. Like I do, she thinks he is becoming more aggressive about these topics and the events that are occurring at that time.
There was a reason to Zach's change in behavior. He got this way because of his arrest. That was a huge incident in his life, and it changed him for the worse. "Sometimes, Lily, I'm so angry I wanna kill something." This is how Zach said he felt due to the arrest. I don't think he would ever say something like that before he got arrested, but now, e=he's just angry at the world.
