  1. A song that reminds me of bees is the song “American Honey” sung by Lady Antebellum. I love this song it is a down to earth song with a special meaning. I found this song just a week ago and instantly thought of The Secret Life of Bees. Lady Antebellum sings this song very well. This song reminds me of Lily is so many ways. “She grew up good she grew up slow like American honey,” This is part of the lyrics from this song. These lyrics remind me of Lily and how she grew up good and she was naïve about life and she grew up slow. Then there is a simile which I love about the lyrics. “Couldn't wait to get goin' But wasn't quite ready to leave So innocent, pure and sweet American honey,” These lyrics in the song remind me exactly off how Lily wants to find her mother and the quote “Lily Owens, your jar is open,” When Lily decides she needs to get Rosaleen out of jail and leave T.ray. Lily did not exactly know what she was going to do but she needed to leave. She had no experience with where she was going to stay or how she was going to live. She just went off. “ There's a wild, wild whisper Blowing in the wind Calling out my name like a long lost friend Oh I miss those days as the years go by Oh nothing's sweeter than summer time And American honey,” This is another example of the lyrics in this song. This reminds me of Lily when she is in the truck with a person that was nice enough to give both Rosaleen and her, a ride to Tiburon. The part where it says calling out my name like a long lost friend makes me think of Boatwright’s house and how she knew she belonged there. “Get caught in the race Of this crazy life Trying to be everything can make you lose your mind I just wanna go back in time,” This makes me think of how Lily is in this misery place dealing with Tray. She tries to be everything she can but Tray doesn’t love her. She wants to go back in time and change everything to when she had her mother and find out if she really shot her mother. This song is about the songwriter’s life and it relates to her. In my opinion, this song makes me think of summer and wanting to be a kid again. I think that the songwriter chose to write this song because she misses the innocence of her youth and would love to go back to her childhood. This song reminds me of bees and of course from this title honey. This song and Lily relate to each other to how they both want to go back in time and how happy they were and when Lily had her mother. If you haven’t listened to this song, I think you should it is country music and it’s a great song!

  2. Song: Take it Easy
    Artist: The Eagles

When I listened to this song, I automatically realized that it made a connection to our novel. It relates to what May was trying to tell August and June in her suicide note. May wanted August and June to live their life to the fullest and stop wasting time.

“We may lose and we may win though
we will never be here again
so open up, I'm climbin' in,
    so take it easy”

These lyrics relate to what May was trying to say to her sisters. Life doesn’t throw the same thing at you twice, so cherish each moment of it. Don’t be full of regret; just keep thinking of what’s coming next for you. I think since May was unhappy that she was not able to live her life the way she would’ve liked, she wanted to warn her sisters that they can’t dwell on the past and miss out on what’s happening in the present. For example, June should overcome her fear of being jilted on her wedding day a second time. Instead, she should marry Neil!

“Lighten up while you still can
    don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
    and take it easy”

“Lighten up while you still can” connects to August and June. They need to realize all of what life has to offer. Right now, after May’s death, August and June have been in a depressed mood, but they need to realize that once they die, they’re going to look back on their lives and feel regret just as May did. There’s no time in life to pout and wonder, just do.

    “Oh we got it easy
    We oughta take it easy”

Some people don’t realize how easy they have it. June, for example, has a great life but she just doesn’t understand how her attitude is preventing her from doing so many things. If you can do something, do it. If you have it easy, take it easy. For a lot of characters in this novel it’s hard to take it easy because they have so much stress on them. If they just took the time to think how good of a life they were actually living, they could be much more carefree and open.

  4. Angelina Fay

A song that reminds me of the Secret Life of Bees is called Angel by Sarah McLachlan. This song is on her album called the City of Angels. It is a sad song, but it tells a story and reminds me of May. The song goes like this: Spend all your time waiting for that second chance. For a break that will make it okay. There’s always some reason to feel not good enough, and it’s hard at the end of the day. I need some distraction, or a beautiful release. Memories seep through my veins that may be empty and weightless and maybe, will find some peace tonight. In the arms of the angel far away from here. From this dark, cold, hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear. You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie. You’re in the arms of the angel. May you find some comfort here. So tired of the straight line, and everywhere you turn, there’s vultures and thieves at your back. The storm keeps on twisting, keep on building your lies that you make up for all that you lack. And don’t make no difference, escaping one last time. No easier to believe. In this sweet madness, this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees. In the arms of the angel far away from here. From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear. You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie. You’re in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here. You’re in the arms of the angel. May you find some comfort here. This song makes me think of May. For that second chance, for a break that will make it okay makes me think of what May must be thinking. Will things ever be okay again? Memories seep through my veins: May can’t help but remember and feel all the sadness. The chorus makes me think of May dying. She is pulled from her terrible memories and is now in the arms of an angel. Hopefully, she will find some comfort and be happier than she was when she was in the place she left.

  5. The song that i think relates the most to this book is the the song Let it Be by the Beatles. This is a very good song and it relates to the story because it shows great feeling in it. For example it says," When i find myself in times of trouble, mother mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be." these lyrics mean that when its hard dont give up, and that mother mary is always there for you. This relates to Lily because she is a hard worker, and she has been through many hardships, but by hanging in there and not giving up she is making her life better everyday. Also their Lady of Chainsis is their Mary, and they pray to her everytime they need help or dont know what to do, or when they are just praying for someone.

  6. Alicia Keys- Doncha Know (Sky is Blue)

If you think the sky is fallin'
    Your commin' undone
    All the pieces crumble
    You're on the run

    All the wrong you've taken
    All the rules your breakin'
Doncha know the silent truth is
    It comes back to you

Doncha know the sky is blue
Can't you see the sun is breaking through
Have a little faith in you
Doncha know the sky is blue

Everytime you walk out that door
    Cursing the sky
    Feeling like you've been cheated
    Ripped from inside

Doncha know the sky is blue
Can't u see the sun is breaking through
Have a little faith in you
Doncha know the sky is blue

    Come on..

    Nanananana...

Doncha know the sky is blue
Docnha know the sky is blue

Have a, have a little faith in you
Doncha know the sky is blue
Doncha know the sky is blue
    Hey!
Doncha know the sky is blue
    Come on
    The sky is blue
    Said: sky, sky
I'm telling you the sky is blue
    Believe it
    Woo hoo
Doncha know the sky sky sky sky
    Hey hey..
    Nananaaa...
This song relates to the life of Lily. She is coming undone and feels like the world is crumbling, like mentioned in the first stanza. She has been doing something’s wrong and has been breaking rules, like when she broke Rosaleen out of jail. The truth has been hidden from Lily, and has been silent all of her life. She doesn’t know if she should believe her father or believe what she thinks truly happened. When it says the sun is breaking through, it relates to Lily because now she found out more about her mother and that she stayed with the Calendar Sisters. In the 4th stanza when it says “Every time you walk out the door, cursing the sky” reminds me of T-Ray and when he always curses at Lily. Also, when it mentioned ripped inside, it’s like Lilly’s heart is being ripped into little pieces by T-Ray.

  8. Runaway By: Cartel
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt3FD93FzAM

Face down; this is where it leads you - too far.
-Being mean and cruel leads T.Ray to be alone.

Buried covered now, you'll find peace - in the earth aground.
Stop now, there's no point in breathing - it's not allowed.
-T.Ray has no reason to live beacuase he has no one in his life.

On the surface, how can you find - reason to move on?
-How can Lily find a reason to move on from searching for her mother.

    Until then you can runaway.
    -Lily runs away with Rosaleen.

Do your best to hide your face.
-Lily does her best to hide her true identity in Tiburon.

    And oh I know you best;
I know you get what you get
    you get what you deserve.
-T.Ray gets what he deserves when Lily leaves him.

Hush now, don't say a word - it's out in the open,
And tell me how can you deal with all this weight?
-How can T.Ray deal with the weight of being so mean and Lily being missing.

Speak now, you must have a secret kept down,
-August knows Lily is keeping secrets deep down.

Down where you can keep it - I need you to spill your guts.
-Lily feels the need to confess and spill her guts to August.

    Until then you can runaway,
-Lily decides to run away and break Rosaleen out of jail and bring her with her.

Do your best to hide your face.
-Lily makes up lies and stories to keep her identity of Lily Owens hidden.

    And oh I know you best;
-August knows Lily best. This is because she knows Lily’s true identity of Deborah’s daughter.

I know you get what you get
    you get what you deserve.
-T.Ray gets what he deserves when Lily leaves him.

Speak now, you must have a secret kept down,
-August knows Lily is keeping secrets deep down.

Down where you can keep it - I need you to spill your guts.
-Lily feels the need to confess and spill her guts to August.

    Until then you can runaway,
-Until Lily finds information about her mother she can run away from T.Ray.

Do your best to hide your face.
-Lily does her best to hide her identity to anyone who asks.

And oh I know you best.
-August knows Deborah better than Lily does.

I know you get what you get
-T.Ray deserves to have no one because of how cruel he is to Lily.

    Until then you can runaway.
-Lily runs away from T. Ray and his cruel punishments and harsh words.

Do your best to hide your face.
-Lily does her best to hide hers and Rosaleen true identities by telling lies.

And oh I know you best,
-August knows Lily better than Lily thinks she does.

I know you get what you get
and all you get what you,
    You get what you get,
    you get what you,
    You get what you get,
and all you get what you deserve.
-T. Ray gets what he deserves. He deserves to be lonely and without anyone because he is so cruel and his actions towards Lily are so ornery.

This song has a very great way of relating to the novel The Secret Life of Bees. The song Runaway by the band Cartel is about people running away and hiding their faces and their true identities. Also it includes phrases such as “you get what you deserve,” which can greatly compare to T. Ray getting what he deserves. This song does not directly relate to just one character. It relates mostly to Lily and T. Ray but also includes characters like Rosaleen, August, and Lily’s mother, Deborah. It mostly relates to how T. Ray gets what he deserves when Lily runs away from home. The song Runaway greatly relates to The Secret Life of Bees.

  9. One song that reminds me of the novel, The Secret Life Of Bees, is Grenade by Bruno Mars. The verse " Easy come, easy go thats just how you live oh take, take, take it all but you never give," reminds me of Lily`s relationship with T-Ray. T-Ray used to abuse Lily and force her to work in the peach feild, but never seemed to return love or apreciation to her, all he ever did was push her around. Another verse,"Gave you all I had and you tossed it in the trash, you tossed in the trash yes you did," reminds me of T-Ray and how he treats Lilly. Lilly gave T-Ray love but instead he abused her. He would force her to neal on Martha whites or beat her. The statement "Yes I would die for you baby, but you wont do the same," would describe Lilly and T-Ray`s feelings toward eachother. Lilly wants to Love her dad but he refuses to feel the same way towards her. The quote "To give me all your love is all i ever asked, cause what you dont understand is I`d catch a grenade for you," could describe lilly hopes toward her relationship with T-Ray.All she ever wanted was someone to love. For the most part, this song is similar to T-Ray and Lilly form the book, the secret life of bees. This song talks about one person refusing to love another the same way. T-Ray refuses to give his love to Lilly who longs for someone to share her love with.

  10. A song that I believe has to do with Lily's relationship with her father is the song "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri. The chorus goes like this:

Who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    And tearing love apart
    You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

This song is from Lily's point of view about T.Ray. It directly relates to them. T. Ray leaves scars on Lily - physically and emotionally. He makes her kneel on the grits and he's always yelling at her and cursing at her. Once, T. Ray tells Lily, "You wake me up again, Lily, and I'll get out the Martha Whites, you hear me?" And he said this just because Lily wanted to show him some bees. T. Ray tore apart love. Deborah started hating him when she was alive and Lily hates him. He also has "ice in his soul". In other words, he doesn't care for other people and he is cruel. "Don't come back for me" relates to Lily telling T. Ray not to look for her after she ran away. She doesn't want to be with him again.
The song "Jar of Hearts" directly relates to Lily and T. Ray's relationship.
