  1. "On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air." During chapter 2, Lily and Rosaleen went into town and ended up in jail for assaulting men. T-Ray was furious at Lily but still bailed her out of jail. When they finally exchange a few words in Lily's bedroom, Lily had it and was running away from the house which is like the "old nest." When scout bees look for a new colony, it refers to Lily trying to find answers and people who knew her mom since one of her old pictures read Tiburon on the back. Tiburon won her favor to travel there with Rosaleen because of the picture and knew something was up in the place.

  2. Week 1 Option 12 Intro Quote
This quote echoes and foreshadows the events of the second chapter. "On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air," is what Lily and Rosaleen did. The "old nest" refers to T.Ray's house. The "swarm" is Lily and Rosaleen. Although they are not necessarily a swarm they left T.Ray's home, only went a few miles to Tiburon and are settling there. Lily and Rosaleen are uncertain of their future though and where it will take them.

  3. This quote echoes chapter 2 exactly. In chapter 2, Lily and Rosaleen get arrested. Lily is bailed out and is allowed to leave, but Rosaleen is not. She is sent to the hospital for stiches on her forehead that came from a racist man that hated colred people. Lily had an epiphany about her life. A voice came to her and told her her jar is open. "You could say I'd never had a true religious moment, the kind where you know yourself spoken to by a voice that seems other than yourself, spoken to so genuinely you see the words shining on trees and clouds. But I had such a moment right then, standing in my own ordinary room. I heard a voice say, Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open." She decides to run away from T.Ray and wants to bring Rosaleen with her. The only problem is that she is still in Jail. Lily hatches a plan to break Rosaleen out of the hospital and make a run for it. Her plan works, and the girls hitchhike to Tiburon, South Carolina. It is ironic how Tiburon is only 90 miles away from Sylvan and the quote states that the bees swarm only a few miles away from their original hive.
This chapter relates because Lily and Rosaleen fled from the law and went a few miles away from their home. Exactly how the quote explains it. I can infer that people will come to find Lily and Rosaleen in Tiburon. The quote states that eventually, the whole swarm takes to the air. Like the people will to find Lily and Rosaleen.

  4. On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air. --Bees of the World

This quote relates to everything that happens in chapter two. “Bees keep traveling until they find a nice new home to settle.” Rosaleen and Lily actually left their old home, where T-Ray is, and hitchhiked into unfamiliar territory. They son found a new place to become inhabitants of. Though, it’s only temporary, this is how a bees life works. It moves from place to place, looking for somewhere to stay until it finds a cozy place and makes it home. Lily and Rosaleen made a small stream to camp out near.
This quote also relates to the novel because there’s symbolism. All the “signs” Lily gets involves bees, which she has secretly hiding in her bedroom walls. Now Lily is beginning to follow the instincts of bees by trusting the signs they give her and their way of finding new homes.

  5. This quote reflects someone leaving but not a completely insane distance. Once that person has left, others follow. This person os Lily and the follower is Rosaleen. They make there way not all that far but settle in a new location all the same. They try to start a new colony or nest, or home. Lily and Rosaleen have run off and are doing the same. They want a new life out of the hive, their starting their own.

  6. The many events of chapter two, echo the chapter introductory quote in many ways. In this chapter, Lily decides she has had enough of her father's abuse and wants to know more about her mother. Also, her father was making cantankerous comments on her mother. She comes to the decision that she will search for someone who knew about her mother, so she can obtain more information on her mother. Like the first part of the quote, “...the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles...”, Lily was able to retrieve Rosaleen from jail, and together, the escaped toward a new home. In the quote, it states “eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air.” The place that had won favor of the swarm was Tiburon. Like the quote, Lily and Rosaleen traveled a few miles to reach Tiburon where they found a pink house that welcomed them to stay for a while.

  7. On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air. --Bees of the World. This quote represents the scenes taken place chapter two because Lily is begining to start her new life with only Rosaleen and herself. after the trip to jail, Lily and her dad T-Ray had an arguement about her mother and she was agitated so much that she left. Lily bailed or "sneaked" Rosaleen out of jail and headed toward Tiburon. After a few miles out of Sylvan, they stoped and rested by a lake. then they kepted on going to the town and finally found a place to call home. the twoof them gals headed for their final destination. "The Virgin Mary," Lily said. they were going to find who owned it or had given it to her mother, but instead lead them to a different root.

  8. The events in chapter 2 echo the introductory quote. It says in the intro,on leaving the old nest, the swarm only flies a few miles and then settles. When Rosaleen and Lily head out to find a new place to escape from T.Ray, when go a little bit out and find a new place to stay. They went to the Boatwrights house. They went their because it stood out, it was a very bright pink color which made it stand out more than the other homes. That is how chapter 2 is similar from the introductory quote.

  9. The events in chapter 2 echo the chapter introductory quote, "On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air." The event echo the quote because Lily is leaving her old 'colony' for a new one and bringing her 'swarm'.
"Suddenly I stood still. Tiburon, South Carolina. Of course." Lily was going to leave Sylvan to find a new one home. She wanted to leave T Ray because of what he said about her mom and how she doesn't care about Lily. T Ray is mean and gives out harsh punishments. Lily was tired of this and knew it was time to go.
Lily decided to bring her 'swarm', Rosaleen, with her. When Lily was thinking of places to go, the town of Tiburon suited her. Because it could reveal something about her mom and about the picture of the Black Virgin Mary, Lily knew it was the place to go. Lily's 'swarm flew away by car to an area close to Tiburon. These events echo the introductory quote of chapter 2 because Lily is looking for a new place to live with Rosaleen.

  10. “On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air. --Bees of the World” The events in chapter 2 echo this introductory quote by revolving around Lily Owens and her wanting to get away and leave. On page 41 it says, I heard a voice say, Lily Melissa Owens, your jar is open. In a matter of seconds I knew exactly what I had to do- leave. Lily talks about leaving to get away from T.ray and she had to get Rosaleen out of jail as soon as she could. In my opinion, I feel that it hurt Lily so much to hear those harsh words come out of T.rays mouth as he told her that her mother never even cared about Lily. Lily feels like she is in this burden and she needs to get out and live her life the way she wants to and find traces of her mother. She is agitated with her father and Lily deserves someone that will care for her and love her. “Scout bees look for a suitable place to start a new colony.” This quote from the introductory relates to Lily and her wanting to start a new beginning.“Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air.” Lily is currently staying in the Boatwright’s home. I can speculate from this quote that she will be there for some period of time and good things will happen.

  11. The introductory quote has a lot to do with the proceedings in chapter two. “On leaving the old nest, the swarm only flies a few meteres and settles”. In this case, the swarm is Lily and Rosaleen, but they really don’t settle, they immediately go to, “Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony”. Lily finds out where she wants to go, and Rosaleen says, “Let me get this straight. You picked Tiburon ‘cause your mother had a picture with that town written on the back- that’s it?” This choice to go to Tiburon fulfills the last part of the introductory quote: “Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air.”

  12. This quote echos the text in chapter 2 because it saying that the bees left, and went to settle somewhere else. Rosaleen and Lily left T. Ray and ran away. She said that they were going to town, but it ended up they were just trying to get away from him. On the way, they stopped at this gas station, so they could get some air. The men at the station soon beat up Rosaleen, and she got arrested because she was colored. The men followed her to the jail, and wanted a apology. Rosaleen refused to apologized, and the men slashed her head with a flashlight. They took Rosaleen to get stitches in the segregated corridor. Lily went and snuck through the window. The people in the hospital were confused why Lily and white little girl was in the segregated corridor of the hospital. Lily took Rosaleen and ran off, so T.Ray wouldn't find them.

  13. The events of chapter two echo the chapter introductory quotes because it foreshadows the events that occur later in the chapter. Leaving the old nest refers to Lily leaving T. Ray. The swarm flies only a few miles and settles refers to Lily and Rosaleen walking a few miles to the river and taking a overnight break. Looking for a suitable place to start the new colony is Lily and Rosaleen going to South Carolina, Tiburon. The location that wins favor is the Boatwright’s house.

  14. The quote,"On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air." is used to introduce chapter two. This quote echos the events that happen in chapter two because Lily finally stands up to T-ray and leaves the house, or the 'nest'. She breaks Rosaleen out of the hospital, which she was in because of the people who attacked her while in jail. Rosaleen and Lily hitchhiked from Sylvan to Tibourn in order to resettle. They finally settle with the "month" sisters, or that is what Lily called them. Which would be the location that wins favor, and now instead of them being all by themselves, there is five people in the house. Instead of just Lily and Rosaleen.

  15. the quote "On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air". Relates so much to chapter 2 because of the fact that Roseleen and Lily run away from Tray and travel to tibrun. Like the quote says On leaving the old nest the swarm normaly flies only a few miles and settles, LilY decideds to run away from her home and get Rosaleen out of jail. Once she gets Rosaleen they go to a town named Tiberun witch is only a couple miles away from there original town the lived in. The next part how the quote relates to the opening of the chapter is how the scout bees look for a suitable place to live, also how one place eventully wins them over. Well this place is Tiberun and this place was choosen because Lily saw that name on the back of the honey picture with black mary.

  16. “On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air.” --Bees of the World. This quote echoes what happens in chapter two because Lilly and Rosaleen decide to run away from Sylvan, T-Ray, jail, the police and the local hospital. Lilly decided that they were going to get away from this town and go to Tiburon, South Carolina. Lilly wanted to go there because Tiburon S.C. was written on the back of the back Marry picture that was once Lilly’s mother. In the event of going to Tiburon South Carolina Lilly is hoping that someone there knew her mother. She would also like to go everywhere in the world that her mother has been. After hitch hiking with a colored man they were dropped three miles from Tiburon. They settled down the creek to rest for the night. It was a beautiful night. They were not very far from Sylvan but they prayed that people, such as T-Ray or the police did not come looking for them.
“There was a bridge with a creek running under it. It was a different universe down there, the water was shining with freckles of moving light and kudzu vines draped behind the pine trees like giant hammocks.” Lilly and Rosaleen found satisfying place to stay for the night, and this would be the town that they started their new life. Rosaleen and Lilly like the bees left their old home and decided to start a new life some where else, that was more pleasant and suitable for them. The bees, Lilly and Rosaleen wanted to start a new life some where that could bring them joy and satisfaction with their life.

  17. Lily lived with T.Ray but ran away. She went to go get Rosaleen and go to Tiburon. They go a few miles and sleep under a bridge. They go around and go to the Boatrights house and stay there for a while.

  18. The introductory quote of chapter two sort of echoes the events in chapter two. The quote is, “On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air.” This relates to chapter two because this is the chapter in the novel where Lily runs away with Rosaleen. They leave their old nest, which would be T. Rays house just outside of Sylvan, South Carolina. They do not get to their destination right away, which would explain the part of the quote, “…flies only a few miles and settles.” Lily and Rosaleen settle for a night next to a river and bathe. They chose to travel and finally settle in Tiburon. This introductory quote, before chapter two, greatly echoes and relates to the events that go on in chapter two of The Secret Life of Bees.

  19. The events in chapter 2 relate to the introductory quote because "on leaving the old nest..." refers to Lily leaving T-Ray's house. "Scout bees look for a suitable place to start their new colony." refers to Lily and Rosaleen finding the Boatwright's house and asking to stay there.

  20. "On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air." The quote closely resembles the events of chapter 2. In it, Lily is fed up and ready to leave. She hates T-Ray, and doesn't like her "old nest" so she sets out to find a new one, bringing Rosaleen with her. At first, she is like a scout bee looking for a suitable place to start her new life. It's just that she doesn't know where to go. Then, when she sees the location on the back of her black Mary picture, she has a revelation. She had found her destination and set out, just as the swarm of bees took to the air.

  21. "On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few miles and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air." This quote foreshadows the events that took place in chapter two. T. Ray gets very mad at Lily and tells her that her mother didn’t care about her and left. Lily is crushed. After thinking about it for awhile, she decided that T. Ray just made this up to punish her. She hears voice telling her “Lily your jar is open.” Lily takes this as a sign that she has to leave. The “old nest” is T. Ray’s house, where Lily was living. Lily “sneaked” Rosaleen out of jail and they run off. At first, they don’t even know where they are going. They are “looking for a suitable place to start the new colony.” New colony means new life. Eventually the black Mary picture on a honey jar leads Lily and Rosaleen to the Boatwright sisters. Lily said that they were going there to find out if August knew her mother, but instead she told the sisters a fake story and wanted to get August, June and May to accept her.
