  1. >> An example of inequality in this story is the relationship with T Ray and Lily. Lily has no trust in T Ray and there's no real relationship without trust. If T Ray didn't punish her for the little things, if he just understand her, a great relationship could flourish.
    >> People today still treat their children like they're not there. Some parents abuse their innocent children for no apparent reason at all. It's not the right thing to do, but people today still do it.

  2. There is alot of ineuality in the Secret Life of Bees. For one thing, white people still did not respect black people and would make fun of them when they see them. Some black people still work for white people. Rosaleen still works for T. Ray and Lily even though slavery is over and she doesn't have to. Also, inside the house there is inequality. T.Ray is the one in power in the house and makes Lily work long hours and yells at her. The night she went to sneak out into the orchard she fell asleep and T.Ray found her outside the next morning. As a punishment, he made her kneel on grits for about an hour. This shows that T.Ray is incharge at the house.

The inequality is not as serious and is not as frequent today as it was in the 1960's. White people still don't like black people being around them and still think they are at a higher power over them. But the reality today is that we are all equal and a different skin tonwe is not going to change that.

  3. So far in the book, The Secret Life of Bees, there was been many inequalities with the people. "You're under arrest," he told Rosaleen. "Assault, theft, and disturbing the peace." when Officer Gaston said that, i knew that whites had more power than the blacks. The whites uses this power by assaulting them. For example, one of the guys hit Rosaleen with a flashlight. Nothing happened to him because he was white. The officer also didn't care that the man was being racist and tackled Rosaleen. If a black were to hit a white being arrested, then the black would also get into trouble.
Although this book takes place in the 60s, this inequality is still present. People who are of a different race are treated differently. For example, i knew an African American who moved to my town. He was treated like a nobody and as a troublemaker when he was smart and funny. The parents of students in the school thought he has a knife in his pocket, and a gun in his backpack when all he had were books and a pencil case. The parents also thought that he shouldn't be living in a great town like ours. They thought that he's from a different town and somehow enrolled to our school illegaly. This discrimination is still going on even after 40 years.Although there is less discrimination, there is still some around.

  4. 1964 or something like this. In that time African American people were discriminated so i don't really know what happen 50 to 60 years ago in America, Roseline was arrested, because she spilled something on white person.

  5. In the story, Rosaleen has a great disadvantage in society. Shes treated so much worse than thos around her. Those who are white have "power" over her in the story. They can get her thrown in jail for something that was THEIR fault. The whites use this power to treat Rosaleen like dirt - and get away with it. If Rosaleen were in todays society, she wouldn't be treated nearly as bad. Inequality still exists, but not nearly as bad as it was in the 1960's. Poor Rosaleen :(

  6. In this book's setting, it is white people, especially men, who had an overwhelming power over others. They didn't use this well, such as the racists in Sylvan who beat Rosaleen up and the cop who then arrested her essentially for getting attacked. This is a clear example of inequality against blacks, since cops turned their backs against open racist violence. Also, some white people of Sylvan made it very hard for black voters to register, even though they legally were allowed to. It said, "They're gonna make 'em write their names in perfect cursive and refuse them a card if they forget so much as to dot an i or cross a t." T. Ray has power to abuse Lily because nobody can stop him due to inequality; Lily is a girl and no authorities would listen to Rosaleen. This inequality appears a lot less in today's society, but it's still there. In the South, blacks are still somewhat separated from whites by traditions such as segregated proms, and minorities elsewhere aren't always equal, like in Freedom Writers, and especially stay highly separated from whites in poor areas, like in that movie.

  7. When Lily and Rosaleen go into town is one of
the best example of inequality. Rosaleen dumped her snuff jug on a white man's shoe at the Esso gas station and got arrested for it! She was charged with assult, theft (for the fan from the church) and disturbing of the peace. She did one minor thing, while the three men there were harassing her and calling her names. The men also beat her, giving her a cut under her eye. And she was the one who was arrested! That wasn't right, considering the Civil Rights Act was already passed. The white men were in power at this moment.
Inequality is a issue today, almost fifty years later. People in the deep, rural south still treat African-Americans poorly. Morgan Freeman even made a domumentary on a high school in the south who held two proms; a black prom and a white prom. Inequality is a very real thing fifty years after it was demeaned illegal.

  8. In our reading of the secret life of bee's the white people have the power and the colored people are extremly inequal in their society. The people who have the power use it to descriminate against the colored folks. Even though this book took place a very long time ago we still have this probably. Luckily it isn't as bad as it was but there are still traces of it. They still don't get treated very greatly but there has been a huge leap since them.

  9. In this story there are many accounts of race inequalities. “He hit me until the police man said it was enough” This shows that the only “punishment” the white men got was that they were told to stop. Rosaleen pored spit on the white men’s shoes and she got arrested, but when the white men beat Rosaleen they are not even punished. This is unfair because the white men committed a much worse crime but unlike Rosaleen they did not get punished.
Over the years this inequality has gone away. The inequalities in this story are mostly racial. Colored people are looked down on as if they are not even human. There are still people who are racist but, people of different races now have equal rights and equal opportunities.

  10. White people have more power then black people. Rosaleen poured her snuff on the white mens shoes and they beat her and were racist and Rosaleen got arrested for what they did. The Police men allowed the 3 white people to beat Rosaleen into a slight concussion. People are still racist and do not treat each other equally like they should. In the 1960's if white people were starting stuff with blacks the white people wouldnt get in trouble just like what happened to Rosaleen she got in trouble for disturbing the peace when it wasnt her fault.

  11. In the story, there are more than a few examples of inequality, mostly because of the time period. The 1960's, as we know, was a very rough patch in our country's history. The most prominent example that appeared in the story so far has to have been when Rosaleen was beaten and it was allowed. Not only was it allowed by an "officer of the law", but she got into trouble for it! Nowadays something like, "After you left, that policeman called Shoe let those men come in for their apology. Two of them held me by the arms while the other one hit me- the one with the flashlight," isn't exactly a reason someone is seen in the hospital. It was such a time of inequality even though a "civil" rights act was passed.

Now, sure inequality still exists. But asking for everyone to be equal is like asking for world peace. There's always people that will hate. The inequality in the world today is by no means civil inequality in workplaces or schools, it's more of a personal issue. I still hear racist comments all of the time. Hate will always present it's ugly face, some forms of it just remain locked away.
