  1. The quote in the beginning of chapter 5, "Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..." relates to chapter 5 because the dark could be referred to as the story behind the Boatwright's dead sister and May. Rosaleen and Lily came into the house and right away they both noticed May's disability, or problem. In this chapter Lily discovers what had happened to make May this way, the misery that May goes through would be the darkness that they have to get use to. In this house, the misery that May goes through is always there. The stone wall makes that obvisous. But there's many other ways that you can tell about the "darkness" like when May hums "Oh Susanna". This would be the first thing that someone would have to get use to being in the house of the Boatwright sisters.

  2. In chapter 5 Lily is still at the Boatwrights house and has been there for a week. She is being shown how to work in the honey house and is getting used to being there. This experience is like following the bee into the hive. At first Lily goes into their house, not knowing what is going to happen, being in the dark. Lily had to become comfortable with her surroundings before doing anything else. Once Lily realizes what is going on around her, like a bee in its hive, she can do things without hesitation.

  4. This quote is related to chapter 5 because it revers to Lily and how the first thing she has to get used to in a new place is how much you don't know. Even now Lily is learning new things about each person.

  5. "Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..." During chapter 5, the Boatwright sisters host a "religious" meeting at their house along with other people. They worshipped the black mary statue, congoed, and touched the heart of black mary. Lily and Rosaleen sit on the "Sidelines" like bees trying to fit into their new hive. The darkness that Lily and Rosaleen have to deal with are warming up to the sisters. That way they know their story and fit in just right.

  6. "Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..." This quote relates to Lily being white and her hosts being black. June does not take a liking to Lily because she is white. "This was a great revelation -- not that I was white but that it seemed like June might not want me here because of my skin color. I hadn't known this was possible -- to reject people for being white (pg 87)." In this quote, Lily is following the Boatwright sisters into the hive. The darkness is symbolizing discrimination. Since Lily is white, she has not been discriminated against before because of her race. Now, she knows how it feels like to be discriminated against. This is something Lily must get used to.

  7. Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness... June answers the door when Rosaleen and Lily arrive. May is behind her. Lily notices right away that May may not be altogether and she thinks that June is a bit harsh. After being taken in, Lily describes the first week at August’s as “a consolation, a pure relief.” Lily felt at ease and Rosaleen was given new clothes. Unfortunatly, Lily overhears June making comments about her skin color. She begins to feel very self conscious. She learns that June plays the cello to dyeing people and terrorizes that this is the reason that June is so nasty. Lily also learns about the death of May’s twin sister April. She learns that May sings “Oh Suzanna!” whenever she gets upset to keep herself from crying, but it usually doesn’t work. August teaches Lily about the bees, urging her to send the bees love and telling her that females make up the bee community most of the time. Lily wants to make August love her. Lily falls asleep hoping she can figure out a way to discover some information about her mother without revealing the truth. Going into the “beehive” was coming into the Calendar Sisters’ lives for Lily and Rosaleen. They were hit with all the “dark” information about the lives of the sisters as well at things that were going on in the world.

  8. "Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..." This quote relates to the events Lily face in chapter 5. Lily is surrounded by darkness in the boatwright ranch and feels uncomfortable. She has to get used to the black people or the darkness she is surrounded by. Also when she hears June talking about Lily's skin color, Lily is very mad and uncomfortable. She feels left out, but also wants to tell the truth to everyone in the house.

  9. This introductory quote relates to chapter 5 because, in that chapter, Lily is staring to get used to staying with the Boatwright Sisters. Lily is starting to feel more comfortable towards them in this chapter just like going in to a bee hive and needing to adjust to the darkness.

  10. this quote is very alike to the events in chapter 5. Lil woke up to June complaining about her visit. This related to the part where you have to get used to darkness. The same goes to Lily because she is like the bee. She is the bee who is going to the hive and is getting used to the darkness because she is all by herself, the only white girl there. It is ironic because the Boatwrights own a bee farm and Lily is coming along to join the hive. Also, in this chapter The story of Beatrix the Nun comes out and it relates to Lily because she ran away too.

  11. The introductory quote that started off chapter 5 relates closely to the chapter events. "Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..." Lily was completely improvising as she went along after becoming a fugitive with Rosaleen. When she found the honey house, she didn't know what to expect from it. She was met with hospitality (other than from June) and was cared for excellently. "The first week at August's was a consolation," says Lily, expressing truly how happy she was. There was, however, a few things she had to get used to. Just like with the bees, Lily wasn't used to the environment. She left the life she was comfortable (not exactly) with and went straight into a new one. If you joined a bees life in the hive, you'd leave the environment you are comfortable with (human world) and enter a new one. Such a transition takes getting used to.

  12. The introductory quote at the beginning of chapter 5 is very relevant to the events that occurred in the chapter. The bee hive in the quote is referencing to the Boatwrights' house. The most meaningful part of the quote was the mentioning of the darkness in the hive. This is referencing to having to get used to all of the household problems, oddities, and deep down, dark events occurring within the house walls. An example of this is the darkness going on in May's head, and the frightening event when she started to sob uncontrollably. Lily also learned the dark secret about how May changed after April died, and how she has the wailing wall where she keeps all of her feelings. May is the center of the darkness in "The Secret Life of Bees", and the introductory quote was very foreshadowing of chapter 5.

  13. Some ways that the intro to the relevant to chapter five are that "imagine that we go into the beehive" relates to how Lily started to work with all the honey and the machines. Another is how "get used to the darkness..." refers to how Rosaleen and Lily are growing apart from each other. Since Rosaleen moved out of the honey barn, Lily's been all alone at night.
