Wk. 2 Option #11 The Supremes Lyrics

Prompt:
The Supremes song that makes Lily think "There's nothing like a song about lost love to remind you how everything precious can slip from the hinges where you've hung it so careful" (50) is called "Where Did Our Love Go". The lyrics to "Where Did Our Love Go?" are:

Baby, baby
Baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me
All by myself

I've got this yearning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

You came into my heart
So tenderly
With a burning love
That stings like a bee

Now that I surrender
So helplessly
You now wanna leave
Ooh, you wanna leave me

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?
Ooh, don't you want me
Don't you want me no more

Ooh, baby
Baby, baby
Where did our love go
And all your promisses
Of a love forever more

I've got this yearning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad

Before you won my heart
You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
You wanna leave me behind
Baby, baby, ooh baby

Baby, baby don't leave me
Ooh, please don't leave me
All by myself

Ooh, baby, baby
Where did our love go?

  1. "Ooh, please don't leave me." This line relates to Lily and her Mother. Lily did not want her mother to leave her. Her mother was all she wanted, and she lost her.
"And it hurts so bad." This line relates to Lily. First it hurt her to lose her mother. She was stuck with T.Ray. T.Ray made her kneel on the grits which also hurt so much. Lily had both internal and external problems that hurt terribly.
"All by myself." This line relates to Lily. Lily told off T.Ray all by herself. She ran away all by herself. She had no help until she arrived at the hospital to pick up Rosaleen. She was very strong to tell off T.Ray and leave him.

  3. June has had rough spots in relationships known in this novel. She was scheduled to be married some time ago. But on the wedding day, her groom did not show up. This made her very sad and wonder what ever happend to him. She now has a relationship with Neil. They have been going out for quite awhile but June is not ready to become married. He keeps pleading for an answer but June keeps plainly responding "no." She is still fragile from her past wedding experience and also is not ready to take on the responsibility of sharing her life with someone else. Neil finally leaves June one day causing her to be sadder than ever. The song relates to the novel so far because June wonders where her courage to become married has wen. It also describes how Lily wonders where or who her mother actually was than just having a fade memory of killing her.

  4. The Supremes song that makes Lily think "There's nothing like a song about lost love to remind you how everything precious can slip from the hinges where you've hung it so careful" is called "Where Did Our Love Go". The lyrics relate to the feelings that Lily is having. When the song say:
    Baby, baby
    Baby don't leave me
    Ooh, please don't leave me
    All by myself
It describes how Lily didn’t want her mother to leave her all by herself. Then when the song say:
    I've got this yearning, burning
    Yearning feelin' inside me
    Ooh, deep inside me
    And it hurts so bad
It describes how Lily wants her mother to come back to her and stay with her forever by her side. Then when the lyrics say You came into my heart, so tenderly. That relates to when Lily’s mother Deborah came into her heart and loved her. She treated Lily so tenderly and with so much care. Then when the lyrics mention Now that I surrender so helplessly. It’s like Lily surrendering to her father after so much pressure, humiliation, and pain she has to go through when she is with him.

  5. The lyrics to "Where Did Our Love Go?" are strongly connected to the main character Lily. This song represents the pain Lily felt after losing her mother. When Lily was only young her mother was killed and Lily believes that she was the killer. In this song the lyric, "Now that I surrender. So helplessly" Resembles the guilt Lily feels about thinking she killed her own mother. Lily feels helpless against her mind and T. Ray by believing what they are telling her.
In the novel Lily is always reminded about her lost mother. On page 85, Lily thinks, "But what really drove Rosaleen crazy was May catching spiders and carrying them out of the house in a dustpan. I liked this about May, since it reminded me of my bug-loving mother." This shows that Lily's mother is always on her mind.
In the song, the lyric, "Baby, baby don't leave me. Ooh, please don't leave me, All by myself." This shows that Lily feels lost and all by herself without out her mother. She doesn't want to be left with T. Ray and would like her loving mother back. Inside of Lily’s heart it is burning with the loss of her mother. The lyric, “I've got this yearning, burning, Yearning feelin' inside me. Ooh, deep inside me, And it hurts so bad” Resembles the pain Lily feels in her heart. Lily is always reminded and it hurts her deep down inside. The song "Where Did Our Love Go?" is strongly connected t the life of Lily in “The Secret Life of Bees.”

This song relates to June and her relationship with Ian the most. In this song it keeps on repeating the lyrics "Don't you want me no more?" This relates to them because Ian thinks that June doesn't really love him because she doesn't want to get marryed because of June's past experiences with marriage.

  8. This song relates to the novel that we are reading because of several reasons. The first verse basically says that someone is leaving another person. Deborah left Lily and now it seems like Lily is saying those words, but nobody is answering her. Also, it is ironic how the person in the song got figuratively stung by a bee and the Boatwrights make a living off the bees. Everyone wants something like in the song. Lily wants her mother. Rosaleen wants her family. May, i would imagine would want to be normal. June wants to marry Neil but she won't. August wants her life to be like when her Big Mama was around. This song has a very good relation to the novel.

  9. this song relates to lily's life because she had a burning love with her dad. she loves him because that is her dad but hates him ,because puts her through so much. She surrenders to her father so helplessly, because if she didnt who knows what would happen. To Lilys her father was perfect dad when it was her, T-Ray and Deborah but no that he only has Lily she doesnt treat her that same.

  10. In the first stanza, the lyrics relate to the book, because Lily didn't want her mom gone, and to leave her all by herself with T. Ray. Lily can't stand him! The second stanza relates, because Lily thinks about her mom every night, but she doesn't want to think about her sometimes, because memories of the gun make her really sad, and hurt. The third relates, because Zach came into her heart, but the love stings like a bee because she is white, and hes black, so society is against them. The fourth relates to the text, because Lily surrenders to going into town with Zach, and then Zach chooses to be loyal to his friends over Lily. The fifth stanza is related because it represents Zach in jail, and their love is fading away because they aren't close anymore. The seventh relates to the book because Zach seemed perfect for Lily, but Zach gave her up for his friends, and left her behind.

  11. The song relates to the novel thus far because Lily is in love with Zach. The problem with this is she has mixed feeling for him because he is black and she is white. Zach confronted her as he figured out what was going on between them. Lily is mixed about her feelings even though Zach confronted her because she is not sure if of her racism thoughts.
    “I've got this yearning, burning
    Yearning feelin' inside me
    Ooh, deep inside me
    And it hurts so bad

    Before you won my heart
    You were a perfect guy
But now that you got me
    You wanna leave me behind
    Baby, baby, ooh baby”
The song lyrics above tell what happens about Lily’s emotional feelings and why Zach confronts her about their relationship. “I've got this yearning, burning Yearning feelin' inside me,” relates to Lily’s thoughts about Zach. “And it hurts so bad,” relates to how Lily cannot have Zach the way she thinks she wants him. “Before you won my heart You were a perfect guy,” relates to them as friends when there was no problems and feelings yet. “But now that you got me You wanna leave me behind,” relates to how Lily decided her feelings, but Zach told her no.

  12. Many verses from Where Did Our Love Go have a direct relation to The Secret Life of Bees. The first eight lines may have to do with the loss of Lily’s mother and how she wants her back so badly. The line “that stings like a bee” is similar to the book because of the word “bee”, while the rest of the stanza may be relating to Lily’s mother or Zach. The eighth stanza directly relates to Lily’s relationship with Zach: she is in love with him, and he loves her, but even though they both know it, they cannot be together and have to leave each other behind. This is proven through a quote by Zach: “Lily, I like you better than any girl I’ve ever known, but you have to understand, there are people who would kill boys like me for even looking at girls like you.”.

  13. The lyrics to "Where Did Our Love Go" by the Supremes can relate to the novel. Rosaleen and Lily have been drifting apart ever so slowly since they arrived at the Boatwright's. August seems to have taken the place of Rosaleen, since her and Lily have been spending so many times in the honey house. Rosaleen has been spending time with May, doing household chores and stuff like that. Rosaleen even moved out of her and Lily's room to sleep with May, since May gets scared at night. The lyrics are basicly Lily asking Rosaleen where their friendship went.

  14. The lyrics to this song relate to the novel. They express some of the feelings Lily has for Zach. Lily really likes Zach but because of their different skin colors and the time of of integration that people won't accept, they would kill Zach, a black boy, for being with Lily, a white girl. Even though Lily understands this conflict, she still feels hurt, like a "bee sting". In the lyrics that mention the bee sting, this ties to the novel because the book uses bees to make relations with the world.
Also, these lyrics express Lily's feelings about her father, T-Ray. All Lily wants from her father is his love for her. Lily is very depressed because she doesn't think T-Ray has any love for her. This is one of the reasons why Lily ran away, because she wasn't loved where she was, not even by any friends she had, though she didn't have any friends. Bees also contribute to these thoughts of Lily's even back where she came from. She had bees living secretly in her room. (Mrs. Drosdick, sorry this entry is late but my computer broke Saturday night so I had to wait until Sunday to go to my friends house to post this.)

  15. These lyrics relate to the novel so far because her mother left her. Or that is what she was told by T. Ray and it stings her heart. She thinks her mother once loved her, but she does not truly know. She is hurt on the inside and it even shows some-what on the outside. She wants to think of her mother as perfect but she does not really know if she left her. She was still young, therefore, she cannot remember. The pain though, kind of stings her heart like a bee sting.. Except longer. The sharp piercing pain you get when a bee stings you is the pain she lives with every single day.
